Great food, good portion sizes and very friendly service. Vegetable coconut curry is awesome and so is the garlic nan. Will definitely be back.

I had the Lamb Rogon, pad pad, and nan this time, chicken masala last time with their lamb non and pod pod again. I have been thrilled with ever dish I’ve had so far. I’ve tried only had dishes other people have recommended, I’ll venture out a little more next time :) You should definitely give this place a try…

Very good and savory food. The meat samosas and puri bread were very tasty appetizers. I ordered the lamb vindaloo and it was also very savory. The lamb was perfect and the spices were right on. Ana had the chicken korma and I will have it for leftovers tonight. We recommend you try the mango shake, but made with the yoghurt.

I don’t usually go for 5 stars, but this place just gets better every time I’m here. The service is excellent and the Star Mogali Lamb is incredible. Lamb is tricky and sometimes gamey, but they always do it right! Come for dinner and you’ll be impressed.

Decided to go here on some recommendations from friends and family. The food was great and the restaurant was quiet. I enjoyed the buffet quite thoroughly and other than the price being quite a bit more than I expected was a very enjoyable meal. I would probably go here every six months, more if the price were better.

For lunch it’s a very expensive buffet and quite disappointing. There was no tandoori when we arrived and when it came out it was legs only. Besides that, the selection was pretty small. $ 13.95(including tax) is way high for one person.

Yum! We love that they use fresh ingredients and high-quality chicken. The garlic naan was the best naan I’ve ever had.

I am from a very small town in Arizona and we have historically lacked any restaurants that serve Indian cuisine. When I moved to Southern California 6 years ago, my friends were shocked to learn I had never even tried it. They whisked me off to a small family owned restaurant in Laguna Beach called Natraj. Thus began my love affair with Indian food. Though I had no idea at the time, this was the first day of the rest of my life. Since then, I’ve tried about a zillion Indian restaurants. And sadly, moved back home. None of those restaurants has quite compared to my first, Natraj. They say your first time is special, and in my case this was true. When I eat Indian food, it’s nearly always delicious. But I’m always silently comparing it to Natraj, wishing it measured up. Star of India was the first Indian restaurant to truly capture my heart after losing Natraj. I wasn’t expecting it, but it swept me off my feet. The garlic naan was crispy, buttery, and soft. The chicken tikka masala was perfection. The aloo gobi was not overcooked; its cauliflower and potatoes perfectly al dente. The samosas were spiced gorgeously. The mint chutney and plum sauce(!!!) were like beautiful music. But in my mouth. The host was friendly and gracious; he took extra time to get to know us and tell us all about the restaurant. We had to drive back home to Arizona today, and I considered running back to Star of India, tears in my eyes, and beg it to make this relationship somehow work. Tell it I wasn’t ready to let go. That I wanted to spend the rest of my life with it. Sadly, I knew it wouldn’t work. Maybe someday in the future we will cross paths again, and if we do, I’ll drop everything and vow to love and cherish it, to remain faithful and love no other restaurant, for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, till death do us part. But until then, I implore you to do yourself a favor and eat there. Enjoy what I cannot. Treat it well.

Too expensive for a 8oz. Cup of chicken tikka masala. $ 15. It was good but not $ 15 good. No rice when you order naan as the side. And I paid for the naan. Isn’t rice a given with any Indian dish?

I can’t comment on the quality of food because the service was so bad we left before we could eat. The waiter was rude to us when we didn’t know our order. He then took 15 minutes coming back to us and proceeded to wave at us as if saying I know I’m coming. When he finally did come we began ordering. Half way through the order the phone rang and he didn’t say please wait or anything he just walked away. I left and when he came back to the table I hand signed from the door that we were leaving. He smiled and waved… super unimpressed.

I am visiting Utah from LA and love Indian food & decided to give this restaurant a try. Delicious! Service is outstanding. This is the oldest Indian restaurant in SLC. I am pretty confused with the bad reviews… I would definitely recommend coming here. I will revisit next time I am in town. Today I am enjoying the vegetable coconut curry & garlic nan. The menu is great, I wanted to try everything!

This is the worst Indian restaurant in salt lake. It was $ 50 for my to go order and the food was bland, cold, and had no spice. I was so disappointed:(

After a long day of weekend work, we purchased a Groupon for $ 10 worth $ 20. For a party of 2, we ordered tandoori fish and chicken tikka masala with nan, totalling $ 44 something something. The quality of their ingredients is high, but just of average taste. They use Red Bird chicken and what tasted like freshish halibut. As far as the taste goes, I don’t feel like their sauces are as flavorful or rich of spices and aromatic as other Indian restaurants. It was good, but I didn’t feel like it was memorable. Their nan was really good though, super fluffy and soft. This was probably just a one time thing. The portions are extremely small. The chicken tikka came out in this tiny bowl, about the same size as a small soup. For the price, I don’t think it’s worth it. Was good, but not good enough that I’d want to spent nearly $ 50 for so little food.

A friend and I went for lunch and there was no one else there so we expected to have great service. We got our menus and they didn’t come back for 20 minutes and we waited for our food for half hour, 40 minutes. We weren’t checked on at all. The food was normal but the service isn’t making me feel the need to go back… Ever.

Star of India is a mainstay for my family. It’s an environment where we can bring larger parties with no problem and have always been treated graciously. The mango lassi is a favorite along with vegetable cocoanut korma, daal, aloo gobi and saag paneer. In my meat eating days I could appreciate all the flavors from the tandoori oven and still enjoy the naan. This place is vegetarian and vegan friendly too! Star of India has also been a generous support to the Buddhist community and to the community at large for years providing food, friendship and countless good deeds unknown. They have warm open hearts which make it easy establishment to come back to again and again.

I was very disappointed with my recent experience here. The food was solid, deserving of 3 or 3.5 stars but the service was a mess. First off it took a long period of time to get our order taken. I immediately noticed our server(who is also the owner I believe) wasn’t writing our order down. Fine, as long as you’ve got a good memory. Turns out he didn’t. We got the wrong order of naan and we asked to split a mango lassi. They show up with two glasses which I assume was them just being nice. Nope, they charge us for two mango lassis. After the server runs my card he comes back and essentially traps us in the booth making conversation about how they’re being forced to move to the corner lot and how high quality their food is in comparison to other restaurants. The more you say your food is high quality, the less I trust you. Then he has the nerve to trash talk Himalayan Kitchen and claim that their kitchens are disgusting and the health inspectors barely let them pass. True or not, it’s less than neighborly to throw another business under the bus in that way.

Upon arrival on a cold rainy day around 7pm, I noticed that my party was the only people there. Since we were there for a business meeting, we didn’t mind the silence or occasional hawking by the waitstaff, despite our lack of water refills unless we asked. We both ordered the papad, chicken tikka masala, garlic naan, and rice. The meal ended up being about $ 25/person, which is on the pricier side for what it was. Even though we were the only party, it took about an hour before we received our food from time of arrival, which is too long – even for dinner. Papad($ 3.50): Spicy wafer of lentils, very thin, and crispy. This was crispy, flavorful, and enjoyable. There were tads that were a bit on the bitter and burnt side, but aside from that, it was not a bad appetizer. Chicken Tikka Masala($ 15.95): Chicken tikka cooked in fresh tomato sauce simmered in traditional masala sauce. This dish was okay. It was aromatic and flavorful with a low spice level. There were only about 3 – 4 small pieces of chicken in the dish as well. Portion for this entrée was the smallest I’ve seen chicken tikka masala served at any restaurant. Garlic Nan($ 2.95): Nan baked with garlic and herbs. Nan was good and flavorful. It wasn’t too oily and it was soft and chewy in texture. It wasn’t bad, but not enough to be this restaurant’s redeeming factor. Rice(complimentary with entrée). Rice came out room temperature and was white. It had little flavor and was plain. I probably won’t be coming back as the prices don’t match the portions, quality, nor the décor. Taste was okay, but nothing remarkable. Service was minimal with water refills only at request and the meal slow – not arriving until 1 hour after arrival. I was fortunate in that I didn’t have to pay for the meal as it was a company expense; however, it still felt like a rip-off – that’s how bad it was. Tip: They have validation… but you need to part at a specific lot across the street. Tip 2: I believe they currently have a $ 20 Groupon deal going on now.

My boyfriend and I really love Indian food and when he moved to Utah, this was the first Indian place he went to. He hates change, so he hasn’t tried many other places. Fortunately, the food is pretty decent. By Utah standard, I think it’s slightly overpriced for the service you receive, but fortunately, the food is pretty good. I’m not a huge fan of the lunch buffet here, as I think it lacks some of the necessary Indian buffet items(tikka masala, butter chicken, and some others) but the actual entrees are great. Any of the briyanis are good, but I suggest the lamb. The butter chicken is also really great, with amazing flavor and juicy chicken. It’s not my favorite Indian place around, but if you know what to order, it’s a pretty good spot in downtown.
