This is the kind of hidden gem you want to see packed every time you go. The food is amazing. It’s just unlike anything else this area has to offer. I’d recommend a dish but everything is fantastic. We had them cater our company picnic recently and every dish was heavenly.

Thanks to all the reviewers on Unilocal. We found this place and the reviewers were spot on. The rib tip dinner was delicious. They are generous with the sauce. The staff were very friendly. They were out of mac & cheese and the cornbread sides, but they made up for it when they offered us a free dessert. We tried the banana pudding and it was yummy.

Skip the pulled pork. Skip the chicken. You’ll need the room for the ribs. I’ve eaten BBQ ribs from Memphis, South Carolina and Texas. Stop searching — these ribs leave you with tears of joy in your eyes. I was getting takeout and asked for extra BBQ sauce, they looked at me like I was crazy. It turned out I was just inexperienced. They will put the perfect amount of sauce on the ribs for you. Because… you could eat them dry or smothered — they will make you question every BBQ rib you’ve ever had or will have no matter what you put on them!!! (the sauce is fine — not great, not magical — just pretty good. but the smoked ribs could be soaked in gasoline and you would ask for seconds)

I’ve been here a couple times now, and here’s what I’ve decided: Pros: the boneless rib tips and their tangy, not overly sweet sauce with just enough heat. Friendly folks at the counter. Cons: the brisket made me sad, more like an overcooked pot roast. Red beans needed a bit more kick, cornbread stuffing had a soapy taste. I’ll likely go back for the tips, and to try some of the other items.

Decent barbecue. It seems like they still have a few kinks to work out. Visits: 2 Recommendations: Rib tips

I had a dream… that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: «We hold soul food to be self-evident, that all food should be created equal.» I had a dream that one day on the rolling hills of Michigan, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down to eat together at the table of brotherhood… I had a dream that little children would one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the food they eat but by the quality of it’s maker. I had a dream today! And today… That dream came true… Thanks Happy Jacks…

This review is based on two separate visits to Happy Jacks. Both my visits were on a week day in early afternoon(between 1330 to 1500.) On both occasions I ordered the rib tips with sides, coleslaw, potato salad and French fries on another occasion. Let’s get down to the meat of the review, which were the rib tips. The tips were cooked perfectly, there were moist, soft, and surprisingly mostly boneless. There were hardly any gristle nor fat – which indicated the superfluous quality of the meat. Finally the sauce on the tips was perfect, appropriately tangy with a slow spicy burn that settles nicely after a few minutes of eating. The sides. Coleslaw and potato salad garner a solid 3 stars. Nothing outstanding but they complemented the BBQ nicely. Environment: Austere and clean. At Happy Jacks, you are there for the food. I would definitely recommend Happy Jacks Barbeque & Southern Cooking and I look forward to visiting their establishment again.

My friend and I went to Happy Jacks for dinner this evening and it was wonderful. She had the rib tips and ribs and I had the brisket… all were awesome. The place is small but very clean and the staff are all so friendly and courteous. The only complaint I have is that this place is very very close to where I live… so it is way to convenient… I will be eating a lot of brisket!

Awesome BBQ and other great southern dishes. Billy and Anthony are doing an awesome job bringing some good southern flavors to St. Joseph. Rib tips and pulled pork are the best around. Excellent sides and great service as well!

Tried it for the first time today. We ordered a full slab of ribs, large baked beans, coleslaw and potato salad. Everything was wonderful! We have never had such large ribs, with so much meat and so tender. There was at least 12 ribs in the slab. We could only eat 4 each and we were full. The potatoe salad could be described as a mashed potatoe salad-different– but great! The baked beans and the coleslaw was also very good. We did take out, but there a about 10 – 15 tables inside, and many families having dinner. They haven’t been open very long, but I predict a very successful business. The owners are really nice and trying very hard.

Tried Happy Jacks for take out dinner tonight and will definitely return. The no less rib tips were terrific as was the barbecue chicken and all the sides we tried including the Mac & cheese, fried okra, baked beans and cole slaw. Save room for dessert as well. The banana pudding is delicious.
