Here’s a restaurant that deserves to be a trending hotspot. For years I’ve passed by D’mangu and never really felt compelled to go for a visit until recently. I saw a fellow Unilocaler post the most amazing photographs of her meal and instantly knew that I had to try their food immediately. So we visited the next day for dinner. The food here is simply excellent. The entrees are served with a choice of side such as green or sweet plantains, yellow or white rice, black or red beans and a salad. I ordered the shrimp salad with green plantains. My food was outstanding, to say the least. My husband had chicken with mofongo, red beans and yellow rice. Their rice is the best rice I’ve ever tasted. He loved his meal and complemented the freshness and deliciousness. Mommy had the chicken breast with vegetables, but wasn’t entirely happy with her food. For first timers, I’d say choose your order carefully and ask plenty of questions. What you order will determine how much you will enjoy your meal. To finish, we had an amazing slice of Tres leche. Certainly one of the best Tres leche cakes in town! The service was amazing; however I wonder if we lucked out considering the several reviews that comment on service inconsistencies. I will update my review accordingly based on the next several experiences to reflect food and service, however for now four stars solid. Our only complaint was how long the food took to arrive. It took forever, but our server said that some dishes take longer than others to prep and we appreciated her acknowledgement of our long wait. The food was worth the wait! So I recommend bringing along dining companions that are great conversationalists and get ready to enjoy a fantastic meal!

Not a true buffet, it’s good. It’s not«all-you-can-eat» and the server fills your plate from a pretty limited selection. You get to choose two meats(from what I remember) and a couple sides. Drinks are additional. Pork was quite fatty(but tasty) and salad was nothing special – lettuce & tomatoes. Bathroom was filthy. I wanted to like this place more than I did… El Latino is far better…

I really liked the food, but the service was some of the worst I ever experienced. We sat down, it took 20 min just to take our order and another 40 for the food. Other tables would get waited on by other waitress but our waitress would never come. We had to get up from the table to get water, and when he food finally came we had to get up again to get silverware. Embarrassing.

We had the epanandas. appetizer…they were flavorful. I had the monfongo with shrimp with coconut. I have never had this type of food before. The waitress explained each dish we were considering. She was very nice and encouraged us to try two different dishes and not both order the same meal. My husband had the red snapper. He said it was very good. We will be back with friends who we know would love the flavorful dishes. There were families with kids eating out so you know the food is good. the kids eating real carribean food. The portions were very generous. We couldn’t finish our meals. would have taken food home but we were going to be out for a few hours.

What a beautiful place. It is like a Dominican Oasis. Salsa music in the background. Beautiful artwork on the walls. The waitstaff is so nice and beautiful. I ordered mofongo and so glad I did. It was amazing. I am looking forward to eating tres leches for desert! Mi vida esta cambiado para siempre! Jaja

Ok this is the best Spanish food in my opinion in Rochester my parents are both Spanish and very picky with food in general and they love it there. The environment is pleasant and very well decorated the staff very friendly and nice. You can either order from the fresh food that they have in full view to make it easier for first timers to view what there meals will look like or you can order from the menu. I recommend the Pernil with Arroz con Habichellas and Tostones which is Baked Pork with Rice and Beans and Fried Crispy Plantains sounds like a lot but they all compliment each other for desert the Tres Leche is Amazing my favorite which is a sweet cake with crème that consists of evaporate and condense milk it’s so delicious trust me :)

I’ve been to D’Mangu around 6 times now, a combination of dining in and taking food to go. You can either order off the menu or from the buffet in the front of the restaurant which confused me the first few times I visited but I’ve got it down now! I have tried a good portion of the menu and have yet to be disappointed. Empanadas, tostones, chicken mofongo, roast pork, steak, beef stew and of course rice and beans are all worth trying. Service has been hit or miss ranging from super helpful and friendly to almost stand offish. Oh and how could I forgot, the house hot sauce is to die for, make sure you ask for a side of it!

Until some friends mentioned this place we had no idea it even existed… just yards away from the King and I which we frequent often. We stopped in for dinner on a Saturday night and it was pretty full(they don’t take reservations). After 6pm there is no buffet so we ordered off the menu. The staff was hustling to serve all of the tables but even then it was a bit slow. They were friendly and helpful answering all of our questions about the menu. Three of us ordered the roast pork with was very good and juicy. The plantain side was excellent but I did not care so much for their veggie side(included lots of cabbage). One of our group ordered the mofongo(fun to say) but he really did not like it — perhaps to starchy with all those mashed up plantains? We also splurged on a slice of tres leche cake which was excellent — moist as it should be.

I have been to D’Mangu several times and really enjoyed their food as well as their customer service. This is of the customer service the last time I was there which will be the last time I ever go. After having a completely ridiculous experience with another Dominican/Puerto Rican restaurant, I called D’Mangu for take out– knowing in my heart they could save the day. A lady answered and took my order. I rushed over and they didn’t have it. They didn’t just NOT have it ready, they had no record of it. When I told them, they seemed to not trust me. They asked for my phone to see if I called the right number… I went to my car, brought it back with their phone number and the duration of the call to prove I wasn’t an idiot like they thought I was. I said I spoke to a woman. They asked all the women on staff and no one fessed up to taking my order. At this point, I am almost late. I ask if they can throw something together and they say it will be at least 10 minutes. I say I am really strapped for time and they just shrug. I was so disappointed in their lack of customer service. No offer to whip something together. Nothing. I left empty handed. Remembering how awesome the owner is, I figured he would want to know this. I emailed the restaurant that night to let them know… no response. Customer lost.

D’Mangu, how I love you! Let me count the ways… I’d really like to start by thanking my fellow Unilocalers who have inspired me to Bookmark this place because of their great reviews and photos. For that I give you the«Bookmark Badge»(Its a made up thing, but you should still feel proud). Seriously though, I am so into this place right now. The parking lot and outside interior of this place is small and uninviting. As soon as you enter though, you are hit with a double whammy; Both by intoxicating smell and by the bold colors of the restaurant! My coworkers and I were a little unsure of how to proceed on the buffet line, so luckily it was 12:30pm and we followed the lunch crowd. I ordered the«Small», which is Rice, Beans, and a Choice of Meat. I got the pinto beans and I recommend that you all! Also, I got the pork… it was soo tender!!! We all sat at a table and several minutes later 4 glasses with ice appeared for our cans of soda.(I wish they would have been complimentary waters though) Honestly we all ordered different meat choices so I was able to sample the stewed meat items. All good and tender, but I have to say my least favorite was the stewed chicken as there was more bone than meat on the plate and it was the least flavorful of all the dishes we tried. BUT, that does not mean it was flavorless by any means, it just wasn’t as flavorful as the other items I tried. In addition, I had the opportunity to try the beef empanada and it too was good. Defiantly will order one next time. My only note is that I spent the remained of the day very thirsty. Lots of sodium with all that flavor, so watch out! Overall… I love you D’Mangu! See you soon!

The BF and I stumbled across this place a few weeks ago, looking for lunch on a Saturday, and were delighted to find a new favorite restaurant. We started with an order of ceviche, which was excellent — the marinade was tangy but not too sour, with lots of flavor, and the fish was cured exactly right. The crisp little chips(almost like a fried wonton — sorry I don’t know what they’re called) were freshly fried and a nice crunchy counterpoint to the soft, velvety fish. BF had chicken mofongo, and I opted for the roast pork with rice and beans. Heaven! The pork was juicy, flavorful, and decadent — particularly the little square of fried skin on top. The rice and beans was also quite satisfactory. What made the meal, for me, was the homemade hot sauce. So good that we wanted to see if we could get some to go! It wasn’t super hot, but it was absolutely packed with bright, fresh, complex flavor. Added a zingy topnote to everything we tried it on. Our waitress was friendly, but service was a bit slow. It was about 1pm on a Saturday, and the restaurant wasn’t busy when we got in. Maybe two other tables. It got busier during our meal, and it was hard to watch people getting plates from the buffet and sitting down to eat while we were waiting. Still, that’s a minor qualm and very easily fixed since I think next time I’d opt for one of the buffet options as well. Can’t wait to come back!

I’m into D’Mangoo, I mean, who doesn’t like Mangoo amirite? If you want to come and taste D’Mangu, this place is open pretty late, right across from King And I Thai which I can’t stand, and close to the amazing Bombay Chaat place. But honestly I’d rather eat Mangu than D’Mangu. Their Pernil-type-dish(roasted pork, usually juicy or at least a little juicy) was dry and a little overpriced compared to El Latino… it didn’t taste particularly seasoned or flavourful which is what I expect from Pernil. And it was lukewarm. Their Empanadas, which I’ve had on three separate occasions because my travelling companion loves empanadas, I find to be 90% pastry and the filling is not particularly great. And sometimes hot, but sometimes lukewarm. Nice and cheap though, which I appreciate. Also, the service has been anywhere from great to rude and abrupt. I won’t downgrade based on service, but the food just doesn’t do it for me. When a certain girl is serving, I kind of feel like I’m being treated like she wishes I never walked into her place. Whereas when a certain guy is serving, I’m the best thing that ever happened to the place. So it’s hit or miss on that front. All in all, I was going to give it a 3, then I read all the owner responses and I was incredibly impressed! I may not be crazy about the food here, but my word this owner has a real passion and a real heart and more than that, he has some of the best PR skills around! He knows exactly what to say and is super duper nice and diplomatic and positive and warm and friendly no matter what sort of criticism is leveled. He seriously should get a side job teaching other owners how to respond on Unilocal because so many of them are awful. And so for his amazing PR skills, I’m bumping the man goo up from a 3 to a 4. Bravo, Luis, bravo.

Silly of me to order the basics for dine in that are also offered at the«buffet». My meal here a few days ago was much different than my first so I had to update my review. Service was still very good. I ordered roast pork, yellow rice, and red beans. I mentioned I wanted juicy pork and she said she could give me half roast pork and half pork stew. She also offered the same to my bf when he couldn’t decide between steak or chicken. Again, maybe it’s because I ordered what I basically could get from the takeout bar, but the food has dropped a few points for me. First, my pork stew was topped with mostly fat leaving barely any meat. Same goes for my bf’s chicken which was mostly a big bone. And where were my habichuelas?! I was served with a cup of liquid and 8 beans. Yes, small enough for me to count. Maybe I went on an off day. I hope all other dishes are still good.
