I don’t understand the fascination with this place. When I moved here everyone talked about it like making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Boy was I disappointed. I was expecting Whole Foods & what I got was an overpriced A& P. And even the A&P we had back home had a better selection of organics. Poor layout, poor selection of products, aisles crowded with tchotchkes in addition to the country club women who stand in the middle of the aisles talking so that no one else can pass makes this an experience equally as painful as having a root canal without novicaine. And as far as their prepared food goes, I’m not sure when they last took a look at what Americans are eating. Blue cheese letttuce wedges are so 7 years ago. And turkey tetrazzini? Did they hire an archaeologist to unearth a cookbook from the 60s?. And don’t get me started on how long it takes to check out because Mary Martha McMertz needs to gossip with Mary Margaret about whatever, «Bless their hearts.» ARRRGGGHHH So if you must go here, I’d recommend taking a few valium and wearing earplugs before doing so. You won’t see me here, I’ll be at Whole Foods or Wegmans.

You gotta love the Ukrop’s. It’s so local, so Richmond! If you are visiting– stop by for a box lunch… try the potato wedges… oh my heavens! If you are local you most likely already shop here.

I’m pretty much a Ukrops loyalist. They’re a locally owned business, their produce ranges from good to superb, and they offer a wide range of solid organic products. I actually often have an easier time finding what I’m looking for at Ukrops than I do at Ellwood Thompsons

Until they started the Fuelperks program earlier this year(2008), I would have given Ukrop’s 3 stars — their prices were higher than Kroger’s, which made it difficult to justify shifting my grocery $$ to U-ville. Now that I can save .10/gallon, at an increasing # of local gas stations, for every $ 50 I spend at Ukrop’s, I’ve done just that. Since I started spending more time there, I’ve discovered that they offer a huge variety of organic products under their private label, Full Circle — all of the ones I’ve tried have been high quality at a very competitive price. Ukrop’s(has anyone else noticed that Ukrop is Pork-u spelled backwards?) has earned some loyalty from this grocery shopper — it might have taken an inducement driven by wildly fluctuating fuel prices, but I think I’m a U-from-U-ville now. I still have to go elsewhere for wine & beer, tho, which eats up some of that fuel I saved on… This Ukrop’s(@ the corner of Three Chopt & Patterson in the Village Shopping Center near UofR) has a great selection in the produce and prepared foods sections, as well as a full complement of all the usual suspects, in addition to the Full Circle organic products I mentioned above. One of the best of the U-ville breed, IMO.
