This place is a good Fish and Chips Stop. I am not a big seafood fan, but I really do enjoy their Fish and Chips. Pros: 1) The prices are good very comparable to similar Fish and Chips quick stops around the SF bay area. 2) The service is OK, the Fish and Chips are nicely fried and hot when you get it, but the fish does start getting soggy it you don’t eat it quickly. 3) Many of the seafood dishes are good. 4) They have very good onion rings, very tasty. 5) They also have fresh cut fries, which they fry twice. Some people may not like them, they taste OK. Cons: 1) This place has a small dinning room compared to the large kitchen. 2) The dinning area seems kind of greasy, maybe needs a some deep deep cleaning. 3) They have no bathrooms for the customers, maybe they should have a someplace or something, so customers can wash their hands. 4) Not sure what type of fish they use, maybe Pollock, don’t know. But overall good experience, I do enjoy a good English Fish and Chips.

Good stuff! We had one years ago in the 70’s at the Park&Shop shopping center in Concord. Yea, I did come all the way out from Concord to get my fix of Fish&Chips. This place really satisfied my craving for good ol fish and chips. It’s still the same as I remember back then…

It’s one of those restaurants(again) where my visit has been long overdue; many years have flown whilst I kept promising myself that I «have got to try this one real soon.» This fall, one cool evening, I finally decided to make the actual step of stepping in here, picking dinner up on the way home from work. I had initially decided on the 2-piece fish-n-chips for each of us but, in a sudden panic attack that it might not be enough, I decided to upgrade the second order to a 3-piece. And I felt the strong urge to add on an order of onion rings to «wash it down»(heh!); so onion rings it came to be! The chips may not be for everyone as it’s fresh cut and not frozen. These real chips have a tendency to go flaccid pretty quick. Personally, I love fresh cut fries as I grew up on them and it wasn’t until my late teens that I tried the flash-frozen crispy standard french-fries. The fish(is it cod or pollock?) was well executed with a nice light crunchy batter, and a moist steaming hot fillet inside. The fish was firm and flaked easily. There was nothing to complain about, nor much to sing paeans about by way of flavour since it’s a neutral fish with almost no seasoning to critique on. I opted for a light seasoning of vinegar and salt in the whole dish. I am glad I got the onions rings as they were delicious! The batter was light and crispy, and the onions were easy to bite off; it wasn’t stringy like at so many other places. Would I go back? I would, but not frequently. Deep fried foods should not become a habit for anyone!

It’s hard to find good old-fashioned fish & chips place these days. But this place rocks! It’s a very small place and its initial appearance is very plain but the amount of food you get and the quality/service, more than makes up for it. It’s pretty darn good! Now keep in mind, that almost everything on the menu is fried, so hardly a low-cal menu choice to be found, but, well let’s face it, good fish & chips tend to be slightly greasy! That’s what makes them good! I wouldn’t recommend eating it everyday of the week, but a couple times a month, well yah! All the side dishes are also tasty and the NE clam chowder is pretty authentic. The place is usually VERY busy, but they are very fast. The owner is super helpful and super nice. The place is clean, but divey. That’s not a put-down. It falls into the eccentric category. As long as it’s clean and food good, who are we to judge on decorating tastes? ;-) LOL! Portions are huge & everything we order has always been great. Last visit we brought some east-coast/New England friends there & they were very happy with what they ate. If you like fish & chips go give this place a try. It’s pretty close to old-school fish & chip shops and if they wrapped it newspaper I’d swear I stepped back in time! Parking is also great & service very fast. p. s. they also offer Loards ice cream, but we are usually so full we have yet to try it!

I was visiting from Seattle and had no idea where my cousin was taking me. She made a call from her phone and sent me inside to pick up the order. I didn’t know what to think. It’s super small, just a few tables. You can see through to the kitchen where they make the magic happen. While I was standing and waiting the very friendly lady behind the counter was helpful as the amazing smell of hushpuppies grabbed me. She convinced me to give them a try and I am glad that I did. We had a feast of tempura vegetables, fish, hushpuppies and fries! Truly awesome — so happy this place was included during my stay in Richmond!

I’m from England and this place rocks. The fish is dead on. Reminds me of home. The place has a old school feel. Put a jukebox in there And it’d be perfect. This is my Friday night treat. Chips are very tasty. They earned my stars

..FINALLY found some«close to my memories as a child“Fish & Chips. Crispy Fry, before it closed, in Emeryville Pub Market was my «go to place». Since then, I’ve been on the hunt. I know. I read about note-worthy places in The City or Pacifica, but wanted something on the EB side. Admitted, it’s a distance away, but… for me… that is really a good thing because I’ll need to make an effort to head up to Richmond on San Pablo to eat it and if it were closer by — it wouldn’t appreciate the meal as «a treat». As soon as I hit the door –I smell — not hot smoking grease — but the malt vinegar and hot fresh oil. I look behind the counter into the grill kitchen area and I see MOUNDS of fresh cut potatoes. 8 minutes after placing the order The fish & chips(not ‘southern meal fried fish’) was piping hot along with perfectly cut and seasoned chips. Salt &MV were sprinkled over piping hot fish & chips and served along with ketchup and tardar sauce. And the hush puppies??? small rounds but hot, crispy and actually made with corn meal. Because I wanted to retain my great memories — I ate until just satiated because I didn’t want to get a fried food sick headache along with indigestion. The staff was awesome, friendly, helpful, and accommodating. I met the cook and the owner — overall — just a Great people AND patrons, a Great afternoon treat, Great tasting food, worth every bit of the RT drive on San Pablo AV from Berkeley and GREAT knowing the H. Salt Esq. Fish & Chips remains. All that was missing was the printed newspaper paper products.

This place is okay, not great. It’s certainly a cut above Long John Silvers or store bought frozen fish and I think they use better fish here such as Sol and not your typical Pollock fish. That said, you cannot control how much vingear you get as they spray it on for you at the counter. I prefer a lot more vineagar on my fish and chips. No complaints other than this however as it’s probably the best fish & chips you can find around the area.

H Salt is like one of those places you pass by and think, should I go in there or not? It’s kind of a hole in the wall place. A hidden gem in Richmond for sure. The breading of their badder is heavenly, and they use good fish like cod, but besides fish they also have fried veggies and oysters! It’s definitely a place to go if you’re in the area. My family and I come here if were in the area… It taste better at H Salt rather than bringing it home because it’s a fresh batch just a reminder!

When I think about how much I’d have to pay for fish and chips somewhere else, this place shines like the promise land, great portions, great taste, and great price point! This place doesn’t look magical from the outside. And yes, you will leave smelling like you’ve been working the fry station at a McDonald’s, but the food here is delicious. Their combos are great deals! Go here!

The fish is good and the batter is very good. They have all kinds of vegetables too that come with the same batter so it can get to be too much, yet — fun meal for take out. But the woman at the service counter is awful. She is SO slow you want to scream. She’s also not that friendly, competent in general or polite. I just lowered my stars from five to three just because of her. And if I stay in my right mind I intend never to return. This part of Richmond has so many great restaurants now I just can’t see ever going back to a dive like this.

I love fish and chips — and have tried many at various places in the East Bay. This is my favorite! Wonderful crust on the fish — and the fish doesn’t have any fishy taste. Just juicy and mouth-watering. Love the fries too.

Friendly service. Made to order. Did not let the fries sit to drain any oil. Food is super greasy. You can only eat here once every six months unless you want to die!

This place was terrible, the calamari was small rings and super tough, the fish was, at best, frozen, thawed and battered to cook. Never would go back.

«From where I was standing, I could see directly into the eye of the great fish.» — George Costanza, Seinfeld Fish, chips, malt vinegar, salt — nuff said. Not quite UK style on a good day — but add prawns, mushrooms, and chowder, you have a pretty solid spot. Every couple of months or so we get some to go and are rarely disappointed in 10+ years — if you remember a couple of things you won’t be either: — This is crispy deep fried goodness, it needs to be eaten hot — within minutes of preparation, 15 minutes later, you’ll be bummed. Eat it right there(not the greatest ambiance), in the car or speed it home quick! — If you eat there or in the car, get the vinegar and salt sprayed on in the shop, other-wise pass and just use the packets when you get home or it’ll be a soggy mess… — Do get the veggies, especially the mushrooms, and get extra parmesan shook on! — Watch them pack your order, they always seem to forget something nothing«big», but tartar sauce, malt vinegar, cole slaw, napkins, and a order of hush puppies have all been missing once over the years. Even so… I STILL go back when the craving hits. For a switch, the fish makes GREAT fish tacos, add flour tortillas, sour cream, shredded cabbage and salsa, my 9 year old loves it!

I haven’t check in here because I’m new to Unilocal but have been here plenty of times! I usually go here during Lent since I am unable to eat meat on Friday’s. I LOVELOVELOVE their fries! I don’t know what it is about them but they are sooooo yummy! The fish is so delicious with ketchup! Oh my, I’m just craving for some Fish and Chips right now! The Srhimp and vegetables are pretty good too! Nice and Crispy! It does a while to fry the food and it can get pricey if you order too much. It is usually dead but it has its busy spurts! If you like McDonald’s fries and we all know that they are yummy but made from who knows what! Try this place! It’s a diamond in the rough but it is yummy! Come and have yout taste buds see for themselves!

On a search to find some good fish & chips in the area, used Unilocal as my resources and it lead me to H Salt Esquire Fish & Chips. What can I say about this place? it isn’t in a great neighborhood, but worth traveling too to satisfy my cravings lol. Walking inside it smelled like Vinegar blah, asides from that there were only two people working which were the cook and cashier gal. Service took about 10mins, and the cashier was really pleasant. She even wrapped my to go bag really cool so my fish wouldn’t be soggy. I ordered two pieces of Cod, two pieces of Catfish, fries and coleslaw. Results? I was totally feeling it! The crunchiness was delicious, I think they use tempura batter. I had no complaints at all. Both pieces of fish were large and tasty. The only thing that I did not like were the french fries, it lacked flavor and the crisp. I don’t like soggy fries =(The coleslaw tasted better than KFC’s coleslaw. I’ll be back for seconds!
