We had 6 Scotch Quail Eggs(great), Haggis on a stick(okey), Duck Gravy(not good) and Moscow Mule(good)

Review for Saturday lunch, around 1p for 4 people. Pros: — Really nice space; airy and tables are spread enough away from each other we can hear our conversation. — Big beer list! — super nice server; he was the only one working and he had to wait on about 5 tables himself, and do the drinks too. Food: — Fried chicken sandwich on ciabatta was awesome! Fried haystack onions on top made it special. — Octopus salad($ 17) was light. Chickpeas were green and tasty! White strawberries were a fun touch. This dish was more an appetizer size, nice Mediterranean flavor. — fish pie: appetizer size as well. Interesting it’s pickled fish and it has a cracker layer of crust. I liked it and wanted more. :) — drinks: nice homemade ginger beer(non-alcoholic). Not sweet like the Bundaberg brand ginger beer, but it was nice and spicy. Repeat business?: Will definitely be back!

Really enjoyed our experience there. We walked in, were warmly greeted, and were impressed with the ambience(because the storefront is so unassuming). Jacob was our server — he was very helpful with recommendations and wanted to make sure we enjoyed our time. Food — thumbs up. I got the lobster banger and my wife got the catch of the day(scallops). We were both pleased. We plan to return.

We walked in on a Saturday afternoon for brunch and this place is practically empty. I wanted something light and different, so we ended up with a chachuterie plate with duck liver pâté(it’s so good, 5-stars all the way), oxtail terrine, and spiced lamb sausage. I highly recomend putting the pâté on every bite, it makes everything taste great! I was very surprised by the taste of the grilled octopus because it tasted Indian, cumin + tomato + green chickpeas + buttery sweet white sauce + green strawberries(not necessary in my opinion) + tender octopus = awesome! Gotta give this place a try!

Love this place, went here multiple times. If you love whiskey, they have an awesome selection, from japanese to american. Food Scotch Eggs: These are absolutely amazing, the flavor and tastes are amazing. A perfectly cooked egg! absolutely love it. The Day’s Fish: Always cooked perfectly well, and always changing based on what is fresh! Milk and Cookies: These are not your average cookies! I love the salty + sweet flavor combination, and these cookies are a perfect example of this flavor combination done well.

My boyfriend and I went to Martins West on Saturday night around 8pm. There were not that many people in the restaurant so we got to sit right away. They had a lot of bottle beers on the menu, but only 5 different kinds of beers on tap. We ordered pretzel for appetizer which was okay for 9 dollars. Later on, we ordered fish and chips to share which was surprisingly good(crunch and chewy inside). However, when we were all done with our food, we had to wait around 15 minutes just to get our check. The restaurant was not busy at all. There were plenty of servers walking around but no one offered to asked us if we needed a check or anything when we clearly did not have anything on our table. The service caused 3 stars instead of 4. Other than that, ambiance was calm and romantic. The food was good.

Martin West is a popular spot in RWC, especially for after work happy hour — the bar area(first come first serve) gets loud. I would make a res if you can, was shocked that the day of options for two on a Friday were limited to 6pm and 8:15pm. Wow — RWC you’re poppin! Perhaps drinks are good but I was unimpressed by the food – * Black Tea Deviled Eggs with Crab — 5STARS: Didn’t taste the tea but LOVED these eggs. It was delicious, creamy, and unique. The frisee on the bottom gave it a contrasting texture. Loved it! * Burger — 2STARS: They’re famous for the burger but I thought it was a VERY mediocre burger and made sad that I didn’t just go to In n Out. Came with fries and a pickle, the best part was the pickle. * Octopus — 3STARS: Beautiful preso, weird texture. Weird textured seafood is not a good thing. * Butterscotch Pot De Crème — 2STARS: Pot de crème is tried and true for me, I love most types but I didn’t like this one. It was WAYWAY too sweet, and just. not good. Crunchy oatmeal cookies on the side — not a fan. * Sticky Toffee Pudding — 4STARS: I don’t like this dish ordinarily because it’s typically too sweet but this was great! This was bearably sweet and tasty — perhaps the sugar from the pot de crème desensitized my tongue?

My husband and I have been here a couple of times now and I have to say I really like this place. The ambiance is awesome first of all. It feels like you’re in an old Scottish castle except you’re not. The cocktails are REALLY good, and the food is even better. They change up the menu often enough that things stay interesting and there are also just really cool things to eat all the time like scotch eggs and really good pâté.

I have been here a few times but the first couple times, I wasn’t super impressed. However, I went last night with a date. One word: WOW! Libations… The drinks are really interesting; they remind me of what you would find at a Speakeasy: lots of bourbon, scotch drinks. For those who don’t like bourbon or scotch, I’m with you :) I had the Magdaluna as my first drink, which was quite good. I was won over, though, by the caipirinha. It isn’t on the menu, but our waitress knew what we meant and her boyfriend, one of the bartenders, knew it well so when he made it for me, it was clear he knew what he was doing. It was delicious! Their wine list looks great as well. Munchies: I have had food here before and wasn’t very impressed but we ordered the fricasse and it was so tasty and light. We truly enjoyed it and were impressed. I wasn’t too sure about Martins West but now it is definitely going to be one of my go-to spots to watch a Warriors’ game or to grab a bite to eat and tasty beverage. :-D

One of the up and coming gastropub in redwood city area. I like the décor and the seating. Food and drinks are quite pricy and in line with many other newer pubs in the peninsula. We tried a few of Unilocaler favorites such as the quail eggs and fish and chips. The food are tasty. The drinks are really strong and you do get your bang for your bucks. However, 3 stars because the place really stinks, the towel that they used has that reek smell like old gym clothes. It’s an easy fix and I hope the next time I visit this wont happen again

Came here to meet with a coworker after work to catch drinks. Service was a bit slow, not too friendly. I didn’t realize the wine by the glass was sold by ½ glasses. So my glass of wine ended up being $ 24. We ordered the tater tot appetizers and 3 tater tots came out with really bland beef tongue on it. I can’t believe how bland and flavorless the food was. We left right after. Along with 2 mocktails, a glass of wine and tater tots, our total came out to $ 65.

Excellent place! Come early and enjoy a drink at the bar. Food is excellent. Can’t go wrong with anything. Scottish eggs came out a little over done and service was quite slow and it wasn’t really slammed. Had Mac n cheese, burger, cheese plate, bone marrow, fish n chips… Table arrangements were nice so you don’t feel crowded but the servers were all assigned all over the place l. l

I had an excellent meal during my visit. I was a little disappointed that I could not remove anything from the dish I originally wanted to order to match up with what I can’t eat(lactose intolerant), but did find a dish that fit the bill which I enjoyed very much. The atmosphere was excellent early in the evening, but more crowded from about 7:30 on, so if you want to have a quiet conversation, go early. The staff was very helpful, and we enjoyed our waiter’s sense of humor immensely! My dessert was excellent, however my dining partners were not as impressed with the ice creams they ordered. They said the flavor was not as bold as they expected it to be given the names.

Came here with a group of coworkers on a Friday in time for the Happy Hour. It was our first time at this place and we were very excited. However, our experience was very poor. They wouldn’t let us order at the bar. We had to wait for our waitress to come back after like 15 to 20 minutes of waiting. We felt very ignored and unwelcome. Also, the prices here are pretty high for cocktails and beer. Just very unhappy overall, because we were ready to order and no one would help us and no one checked up in us. Also our waitress left us halfway through taking our orders because she had to take a beer to another table. What? I’d give 0 reviews if I could. But 1 star for the nice bartender I suppose. However, we will not be returning in the near future. Apparently our experience sucked because there was a huge group of 80 people on the back. This is no excuse for impeding on our experience. Terrible service. Also, to make matters worse: our waitress seated a group of 3 and they had their food and drinks before we even got ours. She didn’t apologize for the slow service, actually she didn’t say much to us. I haven’t been so dissatisfied in a long time. Update: Thank you for the comp at the end on our bill. However, not sure I’d come back to give another go.

Great drinks, cool vibes and an amazing lamb burger. Have been coming to Martins west for over 2 years and it still maintains a high quality of service and food and drinks. Before all the gentrification in downtown redwood city, there was only one place to hang out where you could see other people and that was martins west. Now that there’s vesta and other Michelin mentions in the area, it’s good to see this place still busy and thriving. Cocktails are unique, seasonal and strong. Food is delicious and reasonably priced. Love the exposed brick interior. I keep coming back and always look forward to it.

This is my third visit here, it has been along time, at least 2 years since I’ve been here. The fish and chips were soaking in grease, the fries the same, everything was over salted, and overpriced. There must be some change in the kitchen because this place was good at one time, not so much now. Our waitress appeared very busy, saw her very infrequently, never asked how things were going, I would have told her! Just don’t go here, the prices do not justify the quality of food or service. I’m not going back!

We went to Martin’s West on a Friday night for dinner with friends. The décor was unique and fun and very ‘warm’. Conveniently, they also had TVs but it didn’t feel too«bar-ish». They have so many beers it’s overwhelming. When asked for a recommendation our server asked a few questions and ended up nailing both selections. We also told our server to «surprise us» with the selections of meats and cheeses. What happened next was an awesome culinary adventure. We had smoke rabbit, antelope, interesting goat and sheep cheeses that we’d not normally try ourselves. Service was the best followed closely by the food. Ambiance was a very close third. A true culinary experience and so much interactive fun. We’ll go back for another fun night out of new tastes and great service.

They make the best fish & chips I’ve ever had. The fish pieces were light and crispy. The quail eggs were pretty good to. The eggs were soft cooked on the inside as one would expect. If you are a Scotch and Whiskey fan, they have a huge selection.

I’ve been here quite a few times on dates and its always a hit! Their décor is quite intriguing, not typical for Redwood City at all. The food is pretty darn scrumptious, I don’t believe I’ve had anything I didn’t love. The service has always been swell although I do recall one waitress recommending a white wine with red meat which was a bit odd, other than that they’re pretty on point. All in all I plan to come here again, this place gets pretty lively after hours and is just a bundle of fun with the décor and seating options. Oh! Did I mention their drinks are freaking delicious?!

If you’re looking for a gastropub on the peninsula, you’ve found it. Just stop here. The food here is excellent. I’ve had their fish and chips, duck(not always on the menu), lamb burger, bangers and mash, and each dish has been generous in portion, and solid in flavor. They also have Scotch quail eggs, which are usually to die for. The last time, they were a touch under cooked, so the yolk was cool, and the sausage was a little… rare. This actually dropped it a half star from my previous thoughts which would have been a 4.5 star review. However, the size is perfect, and the flavor is good, so I’m hoping it was an unusual inconsistency. We’ve also tried their haggis on a stick, and like much of the Scottish universe, it’s a food you eat on a dare. Not the best version of haggis. The lamb cheeks were on point(unctuous but not greasy) with a great sauce, and their bone marrow was perfectly cooked. They have very solid cocktails as well. I’ve had several, and have never been disappointed. Their beer list is well curated, and long enough for sure. The one down side I really saw was the sticky toffee pudding. It was actually cake. A nice cake, but definitely not what you anticipate when you order it. But I don’t come here for dessert, I want something that tastes great, and isn’t necessarily good for me, with a cocktail that makes me care less that I got something that probably doesn’t help any new year’s resolution. They cover that in spades. Just try it.

Not bad for a gastropub! Unique eats and awesome ambience!!! Came here to try something different and in deed we got some good food and drinks! The only thing bad is parking– downtown red wood city on a Friday night is a nightmare, so try to get parking close to the nearest garage. But once we got in, people were very friendly and accommodating. The wait time for Friday night dinner walk in was 45-minutes! Insane! But we wanted to try it so we patiently waited and ordered our drinks! I got the oxacan which was delicious! Their drink menu has a vast array of old school specialties! We then got the scotch eggs and the bloody sausage and Shepard pie! I like how their mixtures of food was artistic and different! Would come back here but not on a busy night, maybe a weekday where there is not very many people to enjoy dinner! I would rate higher hit took forever to just get dinner and our orders out…

I was drawn in to this place by the photos of delicious looking pub fare and by the number of good reviews raving about this place. So I figured I’d add my own review of this place to help others from being drawn in by this sirens song. The good: The food is as delicious as it looks in the photos, and they’ve done a great job with the refurbishment of the building with reused building materials. I like their sustainability story on one side of their menu and the delicious pub options on the other side of it. They provide some unique food options such as quail eggs or lamb burger; as well as some old classics such as burgers or shepherd pie. The bad: Way overpriced! There is a maximum price that I’d pay for an amazing burger with all the fixings and this place exceeded that by 20% so I did not try one. Even though the shepherds pie was tasty, the serving size was tiny for the price, and over half of it was the mash potato topping. The beers were airport priced and the pours were half-witted with about a third of the glass filled with the beers head. The bottom line: This is a place for people with too much money, but not enough sense. I left this place with a lighter wallet and a growling stomach. I actually had a fresh lobster and a beer at a different establishment in town for the same amount money a few days earlier and left that place much fuller.

What an incredible place to spend an evening! We came in on New Year’s Night for drinks and social time. All the bartenders take time to stop and make sure you are getting what you want. They also know their beer which is an important part of making me a repeat customer. The atmosphere is both warm AND cool; let me explain. I love old buildings and am always interested in the history. Well, this building used to be a theatre with a saloon downstairs and a hotel upstairs. Wyatt Earp was a frequent visitor! In that way, it is very cool. A lot of the character is maintained, but it is also updated for comfort. Things are comfortable and dark(I like that), and the noise level is pretty low. The bar is long, and the entire establishment is incredibly long, with the kitchen and restrooms at the back of basically two huge dining areas. The bar crowd is probably 30s to 50s, and people were there for good drinks and conversation. Tap selection is pretty good, and the bottle selection is fabulous! Prices are quite high, even though it is the Bay Area. For the experience and the selection, it is worth it. I did not eat anything, but I did envy the pork chops and mac and cheese the man next to me consumed. The only thing I did not like is that the restrooms are directly across from the kitchen…so as I am entering the ladies’ room, I am probably going to bump into some server whose order is up. Awkward. I think I now have TWO favorite beer places…and honestly, I prefer the atmosphere of Martins West. Will definitely be back soon.

Martins West Gastropub used to be one of the«it» restaurants in the Peninsula, but sadly, now serves average food at best, and is edging towards mediocrity. The dishes on the menu all sound great, but they really suffer from execution. Fried items aren’t fried at the correct temperature so they are oily/greasy, dishes are oversalted and/or overcooked– these are all things that could be fairly easily corrected. I hope they’re able to address these issues soon, since the ambiance is really cool here, and the restaurant is very roomy. My coworkers and I came for dinner on a Wednesday night, and we were able to walk in around 6:30pm without reservations. They sat us towards the back of the restaurant at a big and comfy booth, which was nice since it wasn’t quite as loud back there and we could hear each other talk. We tried: –Scotch Quail Eggs($ 8): Just ok. The egg yolk wasn’t runny at all, but it was seasoned well. –Pumpkin Fritters(Pomegranate, Yogurt, Mint, $ 10) & Artisan Cheese(Platter of 5/$ 28) [ : I liked the taste of the pumpkin fritters, but they were overfried and fry. The artisan cheese platter was solid though, and they gave you a good variety of different cheeses and accouterments. –Burger(Grass Fed Beef, Onion-Bacon Confit, Whole Wheat Bun, $ 15, ): Ok, but the patty was on the salty side. Although plentiful, I couldn’t really taste the onion-bacon confit, and it needed more sweetness to offset the salty patty. The fries were very mediocre and needed to be crispier. –Fish & Chips(Ale Battered Pacific Cod, Tandoori Chips, Celery Root Tartar, $ 18): This dish sounded really good but the execution was horrible. The batter was really heavy and greasy, and the tartar had way too much vinegar in it. The fries also weren’t crispy enough– skip! –Sticky Toffee Pudding(Served w/Ice Cream, ): Ok, but nothing special. This version had a very dense consistency. We were all so excited to try our dishes after we ordered them, but all left disappointed after the meal. Service was solid, and parking wasn’t difficult on a Wednesday night– there was plenty of street parking and they have lots available.

All the food I had here was super tasty! The scotch quail eggs were great! The portion came with three eggs. It was the perfect starter because they came out quick and I was hungry when I arrived. My entrée was delicious too. I got the lamb burger! The burger itself was very flavorful and all the toppings complemented the flavors well. The service was friendly and fast. I would definitely return here.

I have had a better experience and it was at Martin’s West. My company had a luncheon there last year and it was great. Good service, great food and a great selection of beers, wines and Scotch. The soft centered scotch eggs were wonderful. The lamb burger made me want to eat another. This year it was completely different place. None of the Scotch eggs had soft centers. I and three of my co-workers ordered the Oxtail Meat pies… and we were all looking forward to them. I got two large bones in mine. Another person got one large bone. My third bite was cold, so I put my finger into the center of the pie and if felt like it has just come from the freezer. At about the same time all three of the others said that their Oxtail pies were also cold. Martin’s took the cold ones and said that they would have replacement plates right out… However, microwaving the meat pies to heat them up and then crisping them in the oven is not the way to cook a meat pie. The centers were nice and hot, but the side pastry taste like raw dough. Last year I would have given them a 5 Star rating, this year 2 Star. Still good Beer, wine and Scotch, but the food should be the leading role.

I agree with a lot of the reviews here. Great atmosphere, good service, nice selection of beers, very hit or miss with the food. We ordered the mac and cheese and broccoli to share. Broccoli was so so but the mac and cheese was phenomenal. Our entrees were the burger, grilled octopus, poutine, and the bone marrow. Again some good some not so good. Burger was a bit dry, grilled octopus was delicious, bone marrow was too greasy with very little marrow and the poutine… well if you mess up cheese and gravy covered fries then you shouldn’t be in the restaurant business. Overall the place is pretty pricey and their menu is constantly changing. I really wanted to try the short rib or the fried chicken but it wasn’t on the menu that day. If you’re drinking maybe the food is better here but I wasn’t that night so maybe that was my mistake.

Super rustic, super cute pub in the downtown area of RWC. We were here for a company party so I can’t say about day-to-day service, atmosphere or regular menu items. Loved the atmosphere and would have considered it for a wedding reception or rehearsal dinner if the parking isn’t so difficult in this area. Appetizers that are recommended: The scotch eggs(rich and perfectly runny inside. Keep in mind these are quail eggs so don’t be shocked they’re small). Entrée: Roasted Lamb chops Dessert items: Earl Grey donut(yum! I love Earl Grey anything!) Sticky Toffee pudding Cocktails(so great to see a place around here that does speakeasy style cocktails with fresh ingredients!): Rogue(redemption rye, organic cider, local honey & bruised sage) — unique flavor with the sage Black Arkansas(hendricks gin, apple cider, raw ginger, fresh lemon) — very autumn-y!

I tried a lot of new stuff lately: 5⁄5: The fried chicken sandwich is phenomenal, because a) the chicken is fried super crunchy, with great flavor, but more importantly, b) they deep fry a bunch of onions and put that on top. Plus, the bread and sauce are great. A winner. 4.5÷5: The Vote Yes cocktail is great: bourbon, cocchi americano rosa, orgeat. Great combination of bourbon and almond flavoring 4⁄5: the sticky toffee pudding is good. The cake itself is not very impressive, but the extra caramel sauce makes up for it. 4⁄5: The Earl Grey marteani is good; interesting flavor with notes of smoke; worth trying once. 2.5÷5: The Hand of Budha infusion is meh. It’s like an inverted Corpse Reviver #2: It’s absinthe, with a hint of hand of Budha lemon liqueur. 2.5÷5: The Evergreen cocktail has Clear Creek douglas fir eau de Vie. It’s very tart, bitter, and dry. The fir comes through as a dry, musty, smokey pine tree undertone. 2⁄5: the Bobby Burns with Corbin sweet potato liqueur and walnut liqueur is OK, but only if you really like a scotch-heavy Bobby Burns.

Stumbled upon this place as my group wanted to try something different in a different area. Not only did this place have good reviews but four stars. The ambiance of this restaurant/bar was nice, very hipster which is in these days. The service could have been way better, our server only came to check on us once and that was after we flagged him down. Besides for the service, the food was okay — not the best I’ve had but it was good. We ordered the following: — Scotch eggs(which the order came with more than 3) — Bone Marrow(wasn’t much marrow, served 3 people) — Lamb burger(highlight, it wasn’t gamey which is always a plus) — Regular burger(was cooked perfectly) — two orders of the fish and chips(the fish didn’t have too much batter which is always good) — two moscow mules and a beer The bill came out to be $ 150 before tip, not to bad but I wished I enjoyed the meal more.

Great spot. I’ve been for drinks and dinner and had good experiences both times. They have a extensive beer and wine list and a wide selection of cocktails. I’ve enjoyed the cocktails I’ve tried. On my last visit, I tried the fish and chips, which were really delicious. Fish was crispy and not greasy at all and I really enjoyed the tandoori chip as well. The place is really lovely, dark woods, brick and dark blues. They do have TV’s playing sports but it’s easy to ignore if you’re not into it. The place has very high ceilings, so it can get loud if it’s crowded. Service has generally been helpful and friendly, on my first visit our waiter was very helpful and offered many suggestions about cocktails and drinks. However, when I visited the second time on a busy weekend evening, the waiter was a bit rushed and brought my friend the wrong cocktail.

This place is probably one of the best place on the peninsula… wait, within California for craft cocktails. This isn’t your run of the mill average fare for drinks. They do however, can make what ever you want but why not try their suggested craft drinks? The team there are very friendly and helpful. They know their food and drinks. This place isn’t your average normal pub/gastro pub El greasy type food. From their charcuterie to their entrees to their drinks, it’s all executed carefully and thoughtfully. I had their lamb burger cooked rare. The quality of meat was fresh and cooked superbly. Their scotch eggs are crispy, salty, and tasty on the outside with a warm yolk on the inside. The poutine is topped with cheese sauce and ox tail, this can be very addicting when complemented by some drinks. I pretty much tried all their suggested craft cocktails and enjoyed them all equally. Can’t go wrong with craft, except if you’re elsewhere. I recently tried a negroni that’s been aged 2months. I had a few in Napa, however, this was by far the better one. The décor is warm and inviting, doesn’t seem like you’re in Redwood City or that there’s even a city outside of its doors. A high five to the team for bringing quality service and creations to us all.

I just remember thinking over and over«This table is too long.» Made a reservation online here for a late dinner because I wasn’t sure how busy it would be. Picked him up from the airport and it was all smiles as we headed here. Cheery chit chat. Nervous energy. I picked Martin’s West because they are open later than most, have amazing cocktails and great quality pub food. We started with cocktails, I had the Bitter Truth and he tried a New Fashioned. Both were super tasty. For food we started with ½ dozen oysters kumamotos which were extremely fresh. Then for mains since we both weren’t too hungry we ordered off the teasers menu, I had the gnocchi and he had grilled octopus. Octopus was perfectly cooked tender and yet slightly firm, and the gnocchi was firm, not over cooked. Sharing bites, I don’t remember exactly what we talked about, but I remember being happy. Tasty artisan cocktails, great food and the good company of a really handsome man who flew in from another country just to see me. After dinner the table next to us had left. He pulled up a chair from their table to sit next to mine and put his arm around me as I held his other hand in mine. The table was too long for both of us, but he was a problem solver. Just outside walking to the car he picked me up, I protested for to put me down while laughing. Just after that while walking to my car we had our first kiss. He looked at me with all smiles. «That was our first kiss!» As I got to the car he ran in front to open my car door. More smiles and stolen glances on the way home. Thanks Martin’s West for setting the stage on the best first date, as it turns out the tables are just long enough.

We walked in the place is very cozy and lively allot of ppl both young and middle aged. Which is always a good sign that everyone enjoys coming here. We looked over the menu and we realized it’s not your average burgers n beer place it’s got allot of interesting ingredients and dishes that some might not go for but we decided to give it a try… being spontaneous! We srarted with Apps: famous Scotch eggs! Crispy outside and a lil runny in the middle we both liked it. Tray of oysters which I absolutely loved! Him not too much And we got a meat tray with lamb patte garlic bread and their homemade chutney which was a little rich for our taste buds but it was good. For entrée: We had their lamb burger we shared as we were full from our apps, we were hoping for great flavor but didn’t meet our expectations Overall place is nice to have drinks and if your up for new ingredients to try this is the place.
