This place is delicious! Kids meals are only $ 4.99 and they come with a side(fries, applesauce, cottage cheese, or soup), and a drink. Kids got the hot chocolate with their meals and it came in large mugs and was tasty. I had the aged white cheddar burger and it was unbelievably good! The burger meat was grilled to perfection! The restaurant is clean, with roomy booths and the restrooms were amongst the nicest I’ve ever been in.

Review from a vegetarian’s palate: We got the Pandora’s Pasta Bowl and the Veggie burger. First the bowl. We got the regular size and it was a solid sized portion plus the toast. The pasta itself was average but the veggies with the pasta is what made this dish. There’s lots of veggies that add color and depth to the dish. Its a solid vegetarian option. Second, the burger. Again solid sized burger with a satisfying amount of French fries. I believe the burger patty is house made. I can’t verify that but it looks like that way. Made of quinoa and some other ingredients I couldn’t decipher. But it was pretty tasty with the pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, Swiss cheese, mushrooms, and guac. By the way, it’s not on the dinner menu, but just ask your waiter/tress and they should be able to get it for you. Also, solid root beer and cinnamon roll. Definitely good option for you veggies out there. Most of menu does have meat, but the vegetarian options are gems. Looks like they have a good breakfast menu so I’ll come by again.

Yum! Our party of four stopped in for lunch before we headed to Mount Rishmore. The French dip, hamburger, salad, hot wings and banana cream pie were great. Clean restrooms, friendly, prompt service and sports on multiple TV screens.

We tried out the Colonial house during a visit to Rapid City. It had decent reviews on Unilocal,so my wife and I gave it a try. All-in-all, it wan’t bad. I got the brisket, and the portion was a little small for the price, but it tasted pretty good, so I can’t complain. It came with a giant corn muffin, beans, and cole-slaw…all pretty good. I didn’t like the BBQ sauce though, it was more like teryaki… soy sauce based. My wife go the spare ribs, the cook was great, but again, the sauce wasn’t. The Servers are a little too in your face, in my opinion, but I give them props, because so many places have terrible service these days. It was OK, nothing special, but not bad either. I probably wouldn’t go back if passing through again

It’s a good place for dinner. My margarita though, is come back just for that and the sweet potato fries! I’ve never had fries with the cinnamon concoction that they served with them before. Just give me a spoon next time lol.

Brunch spot in Rapid city, I’d give it 3.0 stars for the food and an extra half star for the service which was great. My standards for brunch are high though thanks to living in PDX. I got the omelette with buffalo sausage topped with mushroom gravy and biscuit and we also ordered belgian waffles for the table. The best part of my omelette was the buffalo sausage which was flavorful. The biscuit was kind of dry and the gravy was average. I was disappointed with the waffles which were not crisp and the maple syrup was about average. You don’t have too much choice in rapid city so thats there as well. Service and ambience are good and maybe their lunch and dinner food is better.

I came to Colonial for breakfast. Unfortunately, the service was super slow and sloppy. I was given coffee, but had to wait 10 minutes for cream. To place an order another 5 minutes… Food was ok, but nothing to brag about.

The food was outstanding — excellent comfort food. Grilled sourdough sandwiches, chicken fried steak, steak«fingers» … even their liver & onions were all big hits with the family. Steamed asparagus with hollandaise, sweet potatoes fries, steakhouse onion rings with homemade ranch dressing dipping sauce, mashed potatoes with gravy made from scratch were all the delicious sides we had with our meals. The service was excellent — our server was Chris & he saw to our every need. If you’re looking for a mid-range price, tasty, sit-down meal this is your ticket!

Really really good food. We both got the Buffalo burger and they were great. All burgers come with all the fixins and fries. They also have a good draft beer, wine, and cocktail selection. We also got dessert, of which they have a nice selection. Pies and various pastry desserts. Reasonable prices and nice atmosphere for families. Good place for tourists.

Love their new location and parking. Same staff and menu but the new location makes all the difference.

Very good, moderately priced steak. Good salad, real baked potato and very good service. I could find no fault and would eat here again! Special shout out to my waiter Robert for his good service and friendly demeanor!

This restaurant provides good solid food that leaves you feeling satisfied, and has my respect and admiration for it. Walking in, I saw the interiors were wood panel with some interesting posters hung up. Both booth and table seating were available and plentiful, given the restaurant’s large size. I was an immediate fan of their bread; so deliciously soft with just the right amount of salt on it. I even asked them for some to go after the meal. The menu offered a soup and salad combination which I thought was very considerate, particularly since I wasn’t super hungry. BF got the steak and mashed potatoes, which he also enjoyed thoroughly. We also stared at the dessert case for a while, but we decided that we were too full. Service was great, and the meal was fantastic.

A solid, local, family-owned business. The famous caramel rolls. Good breakfast selection. Staff is generally courteous and friendly. Rapid City doesn’t have a huge selection of breakfast options, but the Colonial House is always a safe bet. Not a terrible choice for dinner either though it can be super busy on the weekends.

Stopped into for a quick bite while traveling through town on business. We arrived around 7pm and the restaurant appeared to have just finished their dinner rush as the place was pretty empty. We were seated quickly in a booth(they are a little tight) so we moved a table. I ordered their version of the«In-N-Out» burger and a side salad. My business partner ordered the mushroom and Swiss burger. Our side salads came quickly and were very good but a little small. Our entrees came very quickly in fact we had just finished our salads. My burger was just OK it was cooked well but a little low on flavor. They also use the same buns on this burger as they do the larger ½lb burgers so there is just too much bun. The fries however were cooked perfectly. Service was attentive and our server was very friendly even offered good suggestions of what we should order as at first we were very indecisive. Total bill for 2 burgers, fries, and drinks $ 32 so a little on the high side. All in all I would come back here when I travel back to Rapid City, but I would certainly try a different entrée.

Wow, if you haven’t been to the Colonial House, it is a MUST try!!! My husband and I tried this restaurant for the first time today and are very impressed! We both had cheese curds for an appetizer and pasta dishes for our main dishes. Both dishes had wonderful flavor and were a heaping helping. All the staff was actually happy to be at work and very helpful and nice. We will definitely be back! Thank you for making our date night dinner 5 star and beyond expectations. I would say the Colonial House is one of the best restaurants in Rapid City.

The coffee was weak so I didn’t even take three sips, and their Special of the Day was over priced for the amount you get. I’ve heard lots of good things so I was pretty disappointed for my first time. It was in the new location so I was expecting a cozy ambiance judging by the name; it was definitely modern, but it didn’t mesh well with the diner feel. I’m giving two stars for the service and for the short wait on getting our food,(short with regard to them making everything fresh in house).

My husband and I ate here for the grand opening of the new restaurant. We came early, 4:45pm to beat the crowd. First off, atmosphere. It took me a few minutes to soak it in, and after I did I found it very interesting. When you first walk in there’s the feel of a fine restaurant. We asked to be seated in the bar area. As we walked into that side of the dinning room, it took on a sports bar feeling with TV’s, a few sports memorabilia on the walls and a fine bar. About the time I felt like I was in a sports bar, I looked up and noticed fancy lighting and our waiter came up dressed in all black, looking sharp(like a very fine dinning experience). The booths gave it a café or Perkins type feeling. Grandma and grandpa were in a both eating pie and ice cream and sipping coffee(Perkins feeling), the boys were at the bar drinking beer and watching sports(Boston’s feeling), and others were eating ribeye and sipping wine(Dakota Steak House feeling). It was a hodgepodge of every kind of dinning experience, and I really liked it! 5 stars on atmosphere. Drinks: I ordered a margarita on the rocks and my husband ordered a draft beer. My margarita was fresh squeezed and it compared to an MGM Vegas margarita! It was excellent. My husband’s beer was ice cold. 5 stars on drinks. Appetizers: we ordered the pork rinds, they were excellent! The complimentary cranberry walnut bread was very tasty as well. 5 stars on appetizers. Main course: I ordered the grilled trout, baked sweet potato, and soup. The soup was very good as was the sweet potato with homemade cinnamon butter. The trout was ok, a little dry and not my favorite fish, I wish I had gone with the Walleye. My husband had a ribeye medium rare and it was cooked to perfection and very tasty, it was served with a grilled garlic bulb and rosemary. Very nice touch. The food came hot and within a timely manner but not before we had time to enjoy our appetizer and soup. Perfect timing. 4.5 stars on food. Dessert: we were a little disappointed when trying to order dessert, they were out of caramel rolls, crime brûlée, peanut butter cookies, tiramisu, or bread pudding. The waiter returned to tell us he scrounged up a bread pudding and it was very good. 5 star on taste but 3 star on availability. Service: excellent! Our waiter was friendly, informative, attentive, and helpful. We also got a visit from managment. Great service 5+ stars. Overall experience 4.5 stars. We will be back. I also think I’ve found a new place for happy hour drinks and appetizers

Traveled through town and stopped here based on Unilocal reviews. Way better than typical diners as they make everything fresh in house and have a pastry chef for their breads and desserts. Food was good. Our group had a burger, fried shrimp and the turkey dinner special. Good sized portions and you can trade out sides(you can even get real sides with the burger instead of fries). Desserts were amazing. $ 4 – 6 each. They are HUGE so it’s best to share. The crème brûlée, snickers ice cream pie and coconut cream pie were all great! Crème brûlée was the biggest serving I’ve ever seen. Our waiter was amazing. Friendly, answered all out questions, and the orders were correct. He brought refills and made sure I even had extra lemons for my to go iced tea. As a southerner I take iced tea very seriously and was surprised their tea was so good. The hostess/cashier was also very friendly. They are moving to a new building down the street and reopen November 9th. Will definitely try them again if we ever vacation here again. Beats chain restaurants by a mile. The only thing I was bummed about was that they stopped serving breakfast on Sunday’s at 11:30 and switch to dinner only.

Reminds me of a Cracker Barrel… it had great Unilocal reviews when I looked for a breakfast joint. Parking was packed, with folk pouring out of the doors waiting, so I figured that was a good sign. I put my name in for a 20-minute wait. The waiting room is small, but it was HOT, so best to be in my car, cooling. But I remember this from a time ago, the buzzer doesn’t work in the car. Sigh. I’ll go stand and wait. Approximately 15 minutes later, I was seated in a place where I could people-watch. :) They gave me a dinner menu, but I’d come for breakfast. Could I help it if I was waiting? They honored by request for breakfast and I had the country fried steak and eggs. Delish! While everything was hot, everything was good. Country fried steak could have been more tender, but it was good. Sausage gravy was good until it congealed. Over medium eggs were good. Potatoes ended up being more like potato chips. But alas, I was full. i really wanted to try the bacon, and try a dessert, but I was full. I watched folk for a while. The bar that seats 4 folk is awfully cozy. The wares near the register didn’t get touched much, but seems like lots of folk ordered pastries to go. I was still too full for that. But that salted caramel hit the last spot!
