Their great servers earned the stars for them with their friendliness and positive attitude, but honestly I was less than impressed with their southern style food, prices and restaurant. Street parking only so we parked at the grocery store across the street, walked in and it was freezing cold so we opted for outdoor seating. As soon as we got our drinks and biscuits the flies started in on us throughout the entire meal. We ordered the fried green tomatoes and okra to start, both were the best part of the meal. We also ordered the citrus shrimp salad, Mac n cheese and the chicken and pancake entrée. The shrimp salad is $ 10 for four small shrimps and nothing else! Need I say more? The mac n cheese was over baked which turned the cheese into curd chunks. For $ 20 you get one measly piece of chicken on top of a giant pancake and overdone bacon. I will say their happy hour prices are great for apps and cocktails, both of which we enjoyed. Everything else is not worth the money and I won’t be returning.

I’ve been to Tupleo Honey 4 or so times now. I agree with many that it’s a bit over hyped. Now that things have quieted down a bit, you can actually get a table on a school night without a wait. I like that they offer GF options and the prices span a broad range for every size wallet(sandwiches for $ 9 to plates for $ 26+). They also offer drink specials thru out the week. While I’m not over the moon with the place, it is consistent. And the last time, our waitress was spectacular. I wish I could remember her name. Parking is a severe challenge here and it always seems to rain when we go. Otherwise, if you’re in the area and want a relatively healthy option with some veggies… this is a good choice to please a date, family, kids, and all.

We went to Tupelo with friends on a Monday night and had high expectations. The ambiance was fun and the décor was different and charming. Unfortunately, the food was not as good as we had hoped. The majority of the menu is fried so, understandably, the food is pretty heavy, but it lacked the finesse that we were looking for. We were expecting elevated southern cuisine, but we got a pretty average heavily breaded plate instead. I got the barbecue sandwich which is western style with jalapeño barbecue sauce and a side salad. The sandwich was nothing special with no discernible taste of jalapeño and the salad did not taste fresh at all. They do have a happy hour which is a plus so my wife got a cocktail with lavender and lemonade. She and her friend ended up enjoying the joke that it tasted like lavender bath water, but she could not finish it. The server was really great and had a good sense of humor about it. When she asked him for a suggestion, he was very honest and said that nobody liked the night’s special with orange and bourbon. He suggested the blueberry cocktail which my wife and her friend really enjoyed. The service was definitely the highlight. Our server was just the right amount of attentive, polite and really nice. The biscuit that they serve as an appetizer was good so we will give it a second shot for brunch.

Tupelo Honey in Raleigh, on Oberlin Road did a great job last night with our party of 14. I was especially grateful for the personalized attention I received. I have an allergy to seafood and the management made me aware, that although I ordered the Dastardly Gentleman(a steak option), the side items were prepared in the same fryer as the seafood and there could be cross contamination. The chef offered to substitute some sautéed veggies that were not on the menu. My food was delicious, the management was attentive. Our waitress was great with our big group. Great job Tupelo Raleigh!

Couldn’t possibly ask for more in a brunch spot. I’d been hearing about Tupelo Honey Café from my fellow North Carolina CMs for ages, so when I found myself in the Raleigh/Durham area for a wedding this weekend, I saw it as the perfect opportunity to try it out for myself. I suggested it to the group and just like that we planned a girls brunch for Saturday morning at 9am. Since we got there right when it opened, we were seated immediately. But, I’d say within 15 minutes, the place was packed. I loved the free valet option for parking(that’s always a plus in my book!) and the airy, but comfortable feel of the décor. What I loved most about our waitress, Olivia, was that she was super patient dealing with a group of 6 girls who hadn’t been together in one place in years(one of which actually came all the way from Botswana and the other had just gotten married the night before!). Needless to say, we had a ton of catching up to do so we may or may not have stayed at our table longer than we should have. But, we were never rushed or asked to leave. We felt right at home! I ordered the Tupelo Genuine Country Breakfast and added a kid’s pancake. I just wanted a well rounded breakfast. I was nervous about the pancakes being sweet potato pancakes because I don’t like sweet potatoes, but I decided to try it anyway. They turned out being good! They weren’t my favorite pancakes I’d ever had(because you can ever so slightly taste the sweet potato), but the texture was so on point that part really didn’t matter much. I’d definitely suggest trying them even if you’re not a sweet potato lover, because you’ll probably end up liking them just fine. My bacon, scrambled eggs, and potato cracklings were nothing short of perfection. Of course we had to get libations to celebrate being together, and the mimosa was probably one of the best I’d ever had. The other girls ordered a combination of shoo mercy pancakes, Tupelo Shrimp & Grits, Shoo Mercy Shrimp & Grits, and a few of the grit bowls. Everything I tasted was delicious. There were so many things on the menu that looked good, it was really hard to settle on one thing. One thing I do know, though, is that I will be back next time I’m in a city with a Tupelo Honey. I’ll also be begging them on Twitter to please come to Richmond. This is so our aesthetic.

I’ll start with a disclaimer that I think I ordered the wrong thing… I visited here for a friends birthday a few weeks back and was overwhelmed with the wonderful menu. So many things sounded so great, I could not figure out what to choose. The biscuits that they start you with are amazing, melt in your mouth so I was excited about the food. We started off with the bloody Marys and I decided to be bold, getting the Queen Bloody Mary. When the waiter asked at the end, «red or yellow tomato» I thought he meant the topping tomato. Instead out comes a yellow bloody Mary! While it was very tasty, it did not have the spicy taste I was looking for. I wish the server had explained it a bit better so I knew what he was talking about. For the food I decided to combine the best of all words and get the Shoo Mercy omelet because it had the ham, bacon, pimento cheese, jalapeño, and fried green tomatoes I wanted. Perfect! I thought, I didn’t have to limit myself to just an one dimensional meal. However, when the omelet came out, I was thoroughly confused. The omelet was folded over and looked plain and when I unfolded it, all the toppings were inside the fold, almost like an egg sandwich. When I imagine an omelet, I imagine all the toppings chopped up and inside, not just slabbed on. Maybe this is a Raleigh thing or a southern thing, but it was not what I was looking for. I wish the waiter would have communicated better. My second choice, the ham biscuits and gravy, was served in a bowl when I am way more used to on a plate, no matter the mess. This place was good but I would 100% get something else next time.

To celebrate the end of a successful year of boozing and learning, Tupelo Honey hosted the NC State Finance Club. Despite a reasonably large group of 15 or so, there weren’t any arbitrary menu restrictions. I can understand the practice of restaurants providing a restricted menu for larger parties, but I can even more appreciate those that don’t. I had the opportunity to try multiple menu items. ‘Fit to Be Tied’ Pickled & Fried — I don’t understand the naming convention. Every other menu item has a straightforward name. The pickles and other veggies were fried well, and the house-made ranch was delicious. Warm Pimento Cheese — Served with tortilla chips. No surprises here. It was as good as expected. Fried Chicken & Biscuits — This is Tupelo Honey’s take on a winning combination. Throw a boneless fried chicken breast on top of a biscuit, and finish it with ham, basil, and gravy. I mostly enjoyed this dish. I’ll never fault restaurants for originality, but I don’t think basil combines well with the other flavors. Do you know what should be as sweet as Tupelo Honey, other than her? Sweet tea. I can understand holding back on the sugar if this restaurant weren’t located in the South. Since this is the South, I should feel my pancreas protest with each sip that I take. It’s simply not okay for a Southern-themed restaurant located in the South to have substandard sweet tea. I enjoyed my meal at Tupelo Honey, but wasn’t particularly blown away. At the moment, I prefer Beasley’s, but that’s certainly subject to change.

Full disclosure: Mother’s Day may not have been the best day to form an opinion of this restaurant. Had reservations yet told they were 15 minutes behind, but ended up waiting 40 minutes to be seated… serving delays, never bused the table, never refilled water(we ended up sharing amongst ourselves). When the clock struck 9pm, though, about 15 minutes after we received our entrees, the waitress sets the bill on the table, without asking if we’d like our food boxed up or if we wanted desserts, etc. saying, ‘Don’t want to kick you out, but I know you’re tired…’ Awkward. Nice manager, who seated us personally and had noticed we needed vegetarian/vegan fare. The food is typical heavy Southern cuisine, the interior is unique, and Cameron Village is a nice area to spend the evening. Pretty reasonably priced, all said and done, if you order mostly vegetarian sides and appetizers. My guess is the menu has more appeal to meat-eaters, and I’d avoid busy times like holidays and weekend brunch.

I checked out there menu ahead of time and by looking at their website it offered a free pint glass when we signed up and then showed up. All I had to do was show the email /code and viola! I had a free souvenir! The menu had something for everyone. Kids got mac and chicken. There are salads and burgers and plenty to drink. The start you with biscuits and blueberry jam that is heaven. They send me emails about specials and holiday things, Mother’s Day and brunches. Music nights and the like. I think we would go more often if we were local. It was a fair price for a nice atmosphere and good food.

Whenever someone comes into town this is one of my suggestions for them to go to for either lunch or dinner. Great place for happy hour deals and southern meals. The staff is always warm and friendly and open to offering suggestions in the surrounding area as well. This is the second(?) location, with the first one originally in Asheville. Their biscuits are delicious and complimentary. For dinner I usually go for the fried chicken or their wings. Whatever you do go for a Super plate, you get the most bang for your buck! A main course and two of their fabulous vegetable sides. For parking go up the side road and there is a free parking lot to the right!

My fiancé and I stopped by Tupelo on Saturday for lunch. We happened to be in the area so we decided to take advantage of the opportunity. When we drove up, there was a complimentary valet and we happily took advantage since there was very little parking the area and it was swamped. The guys working were incredibly friendly and very kind. There was about a 25 minute wait for a table, if you have the opportunity make a reservation. We heard about the grilled cheese being amazing, so my fiancé and I both got the Southern Belle Grilled Cheese. It was amazing! The flavors complimented each other perfectly. You could taste the brie and gorgonzola cheeses along with the pear and onion flavors. As my side I chose the basil sautéed green beans, they did not disappoint. They had slight crunch and were flavored perfectly. One last thing, If you’re looking for a refreshing drink try the Lavender-Limeade Fizz, it is delicious. I’ve never tried anything quite like it. Overall, this place is a great place for lunch. I can’t wait to go back and try some of the dinner options soon. PS. Don’t forget to go to their website and register for the Shoo Mercy Club and you will get a free pint glass(it’s the same one in the photo below)!

Came into Tupelo one night looking for something different to eat with friends. Parking is a bit tight because there’s only one little lot to the right side of the restaurant. Once we were inside the restaurant, we thought it was cute, I really loved the honey lighting, great touch! Our server was wonderful. She was really friendly and brought out our orders quickly. She also shared the specials with us, which we ended up trying! I ordered a seasonal gin, my friend had the white peach sangria, and my other friend had the lavender vodka drink. All of these were delicious. and half price. The sangria seemed a bit watered down but tasted nice. I really loved the seasonal gin and the lavender vodka. After we placed our food orders, we received a bottle of honey and each were given one biscuit. The biscuits were really nice and had a bit of cracked pepper on top. The compote on the side(I believe it was blueberry) was nice and sweet but not overpowering. Then our entrees came out. the steak frites with potato cracklins and green chow chow for my friend, my other friend ordered the Southern Fried BLT with potatoes, and I had the Veggie Burger with a side of baked mac and cheese. The food came out hot and looked very appetizing. Everybody enjoyed thier plates, the potato cracklins were a fun, delicious side. The baked mac & cheese was crusty and tasty, but not very cheesy. It had more of an eggy flavor. The veggie burger was alright, but it is primarily made of black beans, and has a strong black bean flavor that I was not incredibly fond of. It fell apart within a couple bites. I liked the bun but the sauce did not have a very strong flavor and overall I was disappointed with the burger. I really enjoyed the side options, the service, and drinks. I wish I could give 3.5 stars because I feel like that’s what this truly deserved, because it’s a bit better than just 3, but not quite a 4 for me.

Stopped by Tupelo for brunch on Saturday and was blown away by unexpected deliciousness. When Tupelo first opened, the reviews weren’t spectacular, so I decided to hold off until things changed. Well, the reviews have definitely improved since then, so my boyfriend and I decided to give it a try. Boy, are we glad we did :) Upon arrival, the wait was a reasonable 20 minutes or so. There was seating outside, so we were able to relax until they called us. Now, onto the eats. We ordered the following off the brunch menu: 1. Smoked Jalapeño Fried Egg BLT w/Stone-Ground Goat Cheese Grits 2. Fried Chicken and Biscuits 3. Counter-culture coffee(free refills) (4. Two warm complimentary biscuits with jam. delicious!) Let me tell ya. both dishes were off the charts good. The BLT was loaded with bacon and fresh tomatoes and greens, while the fried chicken and biscuits had glorious gravy and flavor. The cheese grits were freakin’ delicious. Possibly some of the best I’ve had. Proportions were perfect, especially with the complimentary biscuits, and this is coming from someone who can eat. Between the two of us, we took back half a sandwich and a small portion of the chicken and biscuits.(Both made for excellent leftovers as well!) Coffee was fresh and delicious. We sat outside and enjoyed the warmth of the upcoming season. Service was good as well – no crazy long waits. Overall, this was an experience that I wasn’t expecting, but now that I know, I’ll definitely be back!

I came here twice during a 5-day stay, which should basically say all there is to know about my opinion of the place. My biggest recommendation: if you’ve got a like-minded friend, get the Southern Belle Grilled Cheese and Charleston Chicken sandwich(their two most popular sandwiches), and swap so that you’ve got one half of both sandwiches. You will not regret it. This is what I did the first time I went and wow, I was so pleased with the variety of flavors that I got from one sitting. On my second visit, I got the Southern Belle Grilled Cheese again and wish I could’ve done the whole swap. Overall, great food. I only wish there was one somewhere in California so I could further explore the menu, especially the brunch menu. Solid 4⁄5. Tip: if you sign up at their website, you can actually get a free pint glass. :) It makes for a nice sourvenir!(This applies to when I went, mid-/late-February.)

I brunched here with a friend on Sunday about 11:30am for the first time. I had previously dined for dinner, so I was excited about Brunch and it did not disappoint. I was thinking since we were headed here before noon(and you can’t order a Bloody Mary until 12) that we’d be OK on wait times and I was right. For 2 without a reservation it was about a 20 minute wait. I found a nice double rocker and we chatted while we waited for our table. It was a beautiful day so I was pretty excited when we were seated outside. I pointed out to my lady friend that the blueberry french toast(BLUEBERRYPAINPERDU) looked amazing, but that since I’m super pregnant I’d probably need more food than that and she suggested(because she’s a genius) that we get it as an appetizer and split it. SOWEDID. It was delicious. Not overly syrup-y, the fresh blueberry compote was perfectly smooth. For my entrée I opted to get the Smoked Jalepeno Fried Egg BLT w/Cheese Grits and it was also out of this world delicious. I would highly recommend it. One thing that left a little bit to be desired was the service. I’m not sure what kind of system Tupelo is using for their waitstaff but our server seemed to be all over the place(can we get this kid a ‘section’?) and had a hard time keeping our drinks re-filled and plates cleared throughout the meal. He was very nice, but was so obviously swamped that he didn’t have time to chat or answer menu questions or anything.

First things first, let me just say the ambiance at Tupelo is Southern swaggerific! Dina was an awesome waitress, she helped us choose our entrée options and an appetizer. All menu options sounded and looked delectable but I settled with the Shoo Mercy Shrimp and Grits with a fried chicken breast on the side(for an additonal $ 6). The Shrimp and Grits was awesomeness in a bowl… it was large portion but appropriate for the cost. The fried chicken breast was okay. It was cooked to perfection but missing some pizazz on the seasoning and they do NOT offer any type of hot sauce(i.e. Texas Pete, Frank’s) hence the reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5. Prior to entrees coming out Dina served us biscuits with a blueberry jelly or Orange blossom honey… the biscuits were yummiest with the honey!

OMG, what a great family Birthday dinner outing. My nephew chose this restaurant for his 25th birthday celebration with the family from reading other Unilocalers. It did not disappoint. Our server Dina was extra helpful and provided great service. At the table we tried all tried something different. We began with a small plate for the group, the hot pimento cheese dip with nacho chips. It was really very good. Not spicy but tasty. I had the Brown Buttered Trout with the smashed sweet potatoes and Mac and cheese sides. That plate was really good. The mac and cheese was as good as other Unilocalers state. The appetizer biscuit was a little dense but flavorful. The specialty jam and honey were both good on the biscuit. Other items ordered at the table the tupelo pancake, the shrimp and grits, the hamburger and a «child’s shrimp» which really isn’t a menu item but Dina made it halpen. I can say that the pancake is GIGANTIC flavorful but rather thick and gummy. The shrimp and grits was said to be excellent it looked really good. I will return to try something else the next time I am in Raleigh or even maybe traveling to Charlotte or Asheville.

The food is pretty good, especially considering that this is a chain. There’s usually a big waiting list, so that is an indication. I find it a little bit pricey for what it really is, but you can get some good comfort food here. I’m especially pleased that they have gluten free symbols right on the menu so you don’t have to ask a bunch of questions, and for a place that is known for its biscuits it was a little surprising that they would have quite a few options outside of salads. I’ve had a burger here sans bun, salmon, and also the southwestern omelet off the brunch menu that had a nice amount of avocado in it.

I came here tonight for a date night with my boyfriend. I had a gift card as a Christmas present and decided to use it for our night on the town. It was busy when we walked in and had to wait 45 minutes to be seated! Luckily, right at 45 minutes our table was ready. We got the honey Chipotle wings and fried avacdo as an appetizer and both were delicious! We also had biscuits with a their special jam that was also very good! For our main dish we got the fried chicken and fried shrimp. So yummy! The mashed sweet potatoes were insanely delicious! Tasted just like a desert. Our waiter was awesome. We told him it was our first time and he walked us through the menu. My boyfriend went to the bathroom during dinner and came back and said they had diapers and wipes!!! In the men’s bathroom??? Omg! Unheard of! Thumbs up Tupelo Honey Café! We’ll be back!

Thought this place would be a lot better. Beasleys chicken completely outdoes theirs. Service here was great. Food dissapointment. Fried green tomatoes too much bland grits. And some very bland red sauce. Maybe Chipotle. Too heavy for an app. Okra good job there. Rather see it cut lengthwise good sauce. Chicken dish. I could cook better fried chicken when I was 8. No brine no nothing just bland chicken. Sauce way to thick I know it’s country white gravy but damn. Mac n cheese looked like cream broke while cooking and kale slaw tasted like shit. Did like the architecture. Staff seemed well trained. Well foh staff they didn’t stop moving 1ce. Cleaning refilling etc. Good job there 2 star might be drastic but I really had high hopes and such a dissapointment

The food was so fresh and delicious. The Cider Glazed Salmon is THEBEST! I got the kale greens for the side with it and it was the healthiest brunch ever. Their Bloody Mary is amazing as well… definitely will recommend it to my true Bloody Mary fans out there. The service is also very good.

Tupelo lives up to the hype! I had planned to come here for awhile and it just never happened, until this weekend. We came for brunch and upon arriving, quickly realized we should’ve made reservations. This place gets BUSY! We were told there would be a 1-hr wait time, and so we waited because I knew it wouldn’t actually be an hour(it ended up being more like 20 minutes I think). We were then shown to our seats and after placing our order, we were given biscuits with jam and honey. Delicious! The servers were very attentive and quickly cleared our table. We ordered from the brunch menu – I got the super southern breakfast bowl and my boyfriend got the«samlette»: a salmon omelette with capers and cream cheese. My breakfast bowl was SO yummy: grits and beans with two eggs over easy, bacon, cheese, and salsa. It was warm and gooey – perfect for the rainy morning. My boyfriend also liked his omelette. The décor is beautiful as well. It’d make a great place for a nice date or sunday brunch. I plan on coming again and trying their regular menu. Five stars from me!

I wanted to order *all* of the Southern Small Plates! I’m talking Baked Macaroni & Cheese, Fried Green Tomatoes, Pecan-Crusted Goat Cheese, Southern Fried Okra, Warm Pimento Cheese, Fried Avocado, and that’s not the entire list. But, I opted for a Supper Plate instead and ordered the Carolina Mountain Trout, which was very good. It was a little over-cooked which made it a smidge dry, but still flavorful and very good. It’s tough to hit that sweet spot of cooked through but still moist with a thin filet like trout. My two sides were the Carrot & Kale Slaw with Avocado Lime Vinaigrette and the Edamame, Pine Nut, Carrot, & Golden Raisin Salad. Both were excellent. They don’t show prices online, but I believe my Trout with two sides was around $ 14. Well worth it. The atmosphere is nice and there are spots of unique throughout. The honeycomb shaped lighting is a bit overt, but the natural wood tables in the bar area are beautiful. It has pockets of hip/trendy bar and cookie-cutter restaurant, but it was still cozy and inviting. I would feel comfortable dressed casual and appropriate being a little dressed up. Our server was helpful and polite, and the bartender knew his menu well. Very knowledgeable. We were seated only after checking on our reservation, which leads me to think they leave people in the bar longer than necessary. Regardless, I’ll definitely be back to try those Small Plates!

He was so sweet and checked-in on us frequently to make sure we were having a great experience. Definitely try: — homemade biscuits with the blueberry jam — chips and cheese — sweet tea is EVERYTHING The missing star was for the shrimp and grits. They’re a lot spicier than I thought and the shrimp was a little on the rubbery side :(But I do look forward to visiting again and trying some of the other great menu items.

I dined here for brunch with a friend Sunday. I love the valet option for your car which is complimentary. The parking can be challenging in the Cameron village area on the weekends. When we walked in we were greeted and told for 2 people it would be an hour and half wait… excuse me!!! The place wasn’t even that busy and my friend walked the entire restaurant and saw plenty of open seating. My friend ventured to the bar and scored seating for us which is first come first serve. We only had to wait ten minutes for that! I liked how it is decorated with the barn style door and outdoor seating. When we sat down our waitress Kailyn greeted us and she was extremely pleasant. She made a few recommendations for cocktails and entrees. She was super and the service was superb! She brought us out a few biscuits with the Tupelo’s jam… so good! New ordered the cheddar cauliflower, pancakes, breakfast bowl, and country breakfast. All of the items were delicious and full of flavor. I barely needed syrup on the pancakes as they were so moist. There were so many items to choose from off the menu. What an experience and I hope Kailyn is our server again!

I stopped at Tupelo Honey for dessert and drinks. The first thing you notice when you walk into this restaurant is the atmosphere. It tries to have some character but I cannot pinpoint what they are going for. The lighting gives the place a bit of an orange glow. The bar area has a beautiful wood beamed ceiling and some unique tables that were cross-sections of a tree trunk. According to my boyfriend from Asheville, it used to be a affordable, interesting, locally owned, go-to spot for locals and tourists, but we think their new location is reminiscent of a chain restaurant. The food is expensive and the decoration is traditional. We came for deserts and drinks and the price and quantity of these items were typical, however, we did notice from others at our table who ordered food that the portions were very small and had a hefty price. The quality of the food did look exceptional, and their complimentary biscuit and jam was delicious. They only had two choices for desert: pecan pie and banana pudding. Luckily we like banana pudding, and theirs was perfectly presented and included real banana slices. The food and drinks were good, but since they are more expensive for the portions, I probably will not go here often.

I took myself here for an earlier lunch! Nice place to go and hang out, not be in a rush! The tables are so cool, they are like sections of a cut tree, niffty! My waiter was awesome!!! Very attentive and helped me choose what to eat; which, however, may or may not have been a good thing because I stuffed my face way TOO much while there. Goodness gracious, it’s a problem. Anywho, I ordered the Sweet Potato pancake, divine and very large! Order it to share. I also ordered the Pecan-Crusted Goat Cheese and Herbed Lamb Meatballs. Both were very good! My favorite was probably the Goat Cheese, as some of you may know I am not a big meat person so that is the main reason. I also a custom champagne drink, yum! Yes, I know I started early… don’t judge me! I basically tasted everything I ordered and knocked out half, but it all went home with me so no worries. I cannot wait to go back for something else and as always for breakfast or brunch! Oh, sweet happiness and yummy eating!

The first time I went to Tupelo Honey, we had a bad experience, but I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt since they had just opened. Checked it out again a few months later for Sunday brunch, and while it was better, I’m still not overwhelmed with enthusiasm for this place. The service was inconsistent — it took someone 10 minutes to come to our table and when we ordered our food, it came out so quickly it made me wonder if it was premade. Plus: the goat cheese grits are DELICIOUS. Great consistency and flavorful. Minus: my smoky jalapeño BLT tasted neither smoky nor like jalapeños. I even asked for extra aioli on the side, and while it tasted good it had no jalapeño flavor or spice. The sandwich was okay, it just was not what I expecting based on the description. It also wasn’t warm like a newly fried egg, fresh bacon, and toasted bread should be. The biscuits with jam and honey were quite delicious. I just can’t bring myself to put Tupelo Honey into a regular rotation of restaurants because it’s so inconsistent.

You know I didn’t expect that much out of Tupelo Honey Café due to all the buzz but color me impressed! I’ve eaten here about 5 or so times and always had a great experience but in different ways. From the interesting homey décor, delicious Southern eats with a twist and the cool bar in back, it’s always been a fun meal. I recently tried their fried shrimp with smashed cheesy cauliflower which was off the hook! I mean, who likes cauliflower that much? You will once you try Tupelo Honey’s version. I’ve tried so much of the menu between paid meals and some comp’ed events and it’s all been delicious. Don’t miss their shrimp and goat cheese grits. And service is mostly solid here, I still think they’re getting their staff settled in and given how busy the place is, it’s not perfect. So welcome to Cameron Village, Tupelo Honey Café! Between you, Ajisai and Tazza Kitchen, the food scene here in this shopping plaza just continues to get better and better! And that wraps up Unilocal review #800…

Hmm, it’s hard to give praise to this Tupelo when you’ve been to the original THC in downtown Asheville. Nevertheless, this spot does modern-southern fairly well, while presenting a trend-forward atmosphere. We went for Sunday brunch, and given its prime location in the Cameron Village area, it was crowded. They give you complimentary homemade biscuits and blueberry jam which unfortunately paled in comparison to my previous experience in Asheville. I ordered their Fried Chicken and Biscuits which came with a fairly good gravy on top. Altogether, it was a good meal but nothing insane. As objectively as I tried to experience this restaurant, it was difficult not to compare it to its original counterpart. They didn’t offer mint-infused sweet tea, the biscuits weren’t as memorable, and the atmosphere was more progressive/upscale rather than trendy-southern. All things that had me raving about this restaurant in the first place. I’d have no problem dining here again, but I’m not sure it would be on my own decision. A solid meal that is heavily overshadowed by the hype, location, reputation, and stiff prices.

I gotta say that as much as I wanted to try this place, I was intimidated by the large-sounding crowds with huge wait times and the impossible-sounding parking situation. So now, long after they have opened, on a recent weeknight, I suggested to Husband that we give it a go, and sure enough we walked right into the bar area and got a nice little booth. Note there are two entrances. The one closest to Clark Avenue is the bar entrance. If you want the main one, it’s opposite that. Now we knew parking might be an issue, so we just parked in Cameron Village and walked over. No big deal. Service was super friendly from the Bartender to the folks that brought the food and drinks to the manager who stopped by. We enjoyed our drinks and the quality of food. I’m not a biscuit-loving gal, but when confronted by the one that was placed in front of me with the blueberry compote, well let’s just say I’m glad calories don’t count when they’re not your fault. Trying to be somewhat good I opted for the Orange Sesame Greens with Spiced Shrimp, while Husband was doing the exact opposite with his choice of Southern Fried Chicken BLT(even added pimiento cheese for .75), although he did go with a side salad instead of mac n cheese, which he did contemplate. My salad was actually quite light. The«spiced» shrimp were not a spicy shrimp, but more like Old Bay shrimp which was unexpected with the Asian-sounding Orange Sesame Greens. But they were not Asian tasting, so somehow it all worked together in a fresh and tasty way. Meanwhile Husband was really enjoying his giant sandwich and salad.(He did end up taking half the sandwich home). Both of us really enjoyed our experience here and are looking forward to future ones. Note: they are doing reservations online but at least 2 hours ahead of time. I was afraid when no reservations were available until 8 the night I checked that that meant they were full, but that wasn’t the case.

Meh… I was really looking forward to trying TH based on what all my friends told me, but I was a little underwhelmed. We had a reservation at 745 on a Saturday with my in-laws from up north. We arrived right on time and were told they were waiting on the table to leave. I understand that cannot be helped, but an apology or acknowledgement that our reservation was not being met would have been nice. Luckily we only had to wait ten minutes before we were sat, but it was not an ideal start. Our server was good, but not as attentive as she probably should have been. Our waters got low a few times and we waited on our check for a while. The food was good, but nothing was amazing or to die for. The pimento cheese dip was good but had a weird aftertaste. The Carolina Mai tai was good and sweet. The shrimp Mac and cheese was good but the shrimp were very tiny. My favorite was the pecan goat cheese. It was delicious. Oh and the homemade biscuit with blueberry jam they bring each person was yummy. All the small plates are truly small(we always have left overs but did not after our meal with four small plates and a dessert). I will say that the outdoor patio looked really awesome. I don’t think I would be back for dinner but I would be willing to try it again for brunch.

The first time I came here, I think the hype from the Asheville location may have clouded my judgement. While it is a new location, I expected all the kinks to be worked out, but that was not the case. Maybe I ordered the wrong thing, it was a crazy busy night, but I walked away thinking, ‘really…’ I just didn’t get it. Having this location walking distance from my place seemed like a great opportunity. But given the fact that I waited my 2 hours for a table by walking around Harris Teeter and Starbucks and then my food was just ok made me eye other possible restaurants in Cameron Village(sans the McDonalds with the distorted signage). However, I recently had the opportunity to try their new small plates menu. This may be their sweet spot. Herbed Lamb Meatballs and Mac and Cheese were out of this world. Goat Cheese poppers had the perfect amount of savory with a kick of spice. The other thing I loved was the opportunity to create my own Old Fashioned. I usually stick with my Chardonnay or Vodka Tonic but their Whisky selection had me taking a leap of faith, and I’m really glad I did. Great service from the bar. Don’t be afraid if you are a party of two to head towards the back where the seats are first come first serve.
