This little deli is the essence of a hidden gem. It’s within a 1-mile radius of my house, I’ve driven by it a bajillion(or is that a bajillion and one) times and I’ve never really noticed it was there. Until I saw a string of 4– and 5-star reviews on Unilocal. The space is comfy and cool, with a collection of tables and couches for chilling, eating, drinking a coffee or a cold beer, and hanging out. The sandwich list is varied and delicious, with many pressed and grilled offerings, many on house-baked bread. The prices are very reasonable, and the service is low-key but friendly and attentive. I ordered up a salami on a house-made jalapeño cheese roll. I was informed that the rolls were fresh out of the oven. I grabbbed a bag of Kettle chips and a San Pelle Aranciata and sat down to wait for my sando. Not long after, a plate of goodness arrived. The roll was basically a baguette-style roll with a jalapeño slice and a layer of cheese on top, but it was obviously freshly baked and quite tasty. It was a little more dry than I expected, but I guess I was picturing(hoping for) ab more doughy roll. It wasn’t overly dry, but just not quite what I was picturing. The sando was decent sized and quite tasty. It was very filling, and I probably didn’t even need the chips. A nice dry salami with cheese and veggies. MMmmm… When I was done, walked back up to pay. While standing at the counter, I spied a couple of jars full of gigantic, obviously house-made cookies. The big fat chocolate chip oatmeal cookies were beckoning to me, and I couldn’t resist. Grabbing a cookie to go(plus sando, drink, and chips) totaled out at $ 12. Not bad compared to the string of $ 8-$ 13 sandwiches I have been indulging in recently. The cookie? BOMB. I love a good oatmeal* chocolate chip cookie, and this is a good’un. I’m super stoked to have found this place just over the hill from my house. I’ll definitely be back often. Also, they have a couple of draft beers(I think) and a few days of the week they have all day happy hour $ 2.75 pints(if I read the board right). That’s an awesome deal! ___________________________________________________ *My love for oatmeal cookies extends to just plain oatmeal and to oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Oatmeal-raisin cookies are an abomination… a creation of the devil. Who would ruin a perfectly good oatmeal cookie by putting raisins in it? Seriously! Raisins belong in lunch boxes and trail mix. Keep that crap out of my delicious oatmeal cookies, dammit!

Normally, the Mt Tabor pocket of P-Town makes me a little nervous. Maybe it’s the caldera locale and my own volcanic roots mixing badly, but it has a lot to do with the Dog and Stroller Mafia. You know the D/S Mafia when you see them. Pooches and babies, each more doe-eyed than the next, and the big people who usher them around. The babies are pumpkin-headed and smiley. The dogs don’t lick their undersides in public. The big people look tired but happy. And though I like each of those groups just fine, in herds, I become utterly perplexed. Normally, my question is «Who opts to make themselves that busy?» But around Mt Tabor where they congregate in intimidating packs, my question turns into«How come that family is so adorable? Am I messing up my life? What if I’m ruining my chances at getting into the D/S Mafia? Brain malfunction!» So I’m always stoked to find a friendly neighborhood hang-out that welcomes both Bjorn-carrying members of the D/S and the non-affiliated. Inside Parkside, you’re greeted by mellow, tan shades and shiny wood floors as well as the super sweet guy who works there. Everything from the beer display to the books placed on the grid shelf looks clean and smartly organized. If you have a litter of canine and kidlets, the interior gives you a ton of open space. If you prefer to eat al fresco, there’s a small deck in the back. And the food? Let’s just say after a meal of salami on jalapeño-cheese bread and Garden Salsa Sun Chips on a warm afternoon, I don’t feel ambivalent about Mt Tabor. The D/S Mafia can have their little Crocs and overpriced strollers and free doggy biscuits. We can all enjoy kick-ass sandwiches in harmony. I’m not getting all mom-bloggy, of course. There’s all-day happy hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays and there, amidst cheap drinks and the slowly-dwindling summer evenings, you’ll probably find me.

The perfect sandwich shop! Choose a sandwich or build your own. Really sweet little shop with a great selection of sandwiches, salads, soups, chips and SUPERYUMMY chocolate chip cookies. Get ‘em while they’re hot! Plus beer on tap, wine and a nice choice of non alcoholic drinks too. Also a cute little covered patio in the back. I’m so glad this shop is in the neighborhood, it’s the perfect spot to stop when you don’t want a big huge meal.

Parkside Deli Rocks! Killer sando’s and soup with croutons. Nice people, good coffee, homebaked goods, beer, wine, salad, etc. Next time you are in the neighborhood skip Coopers and enjoy lunch.

Thank you, Parkside, for bringing food to the mountain. Mt. Tabor, that is. Should you find yourself hungry, and traversing the Belmont corridor between the Horse Brass and Bi-Partisan Café, you can stop at Parkside, Mt. Tabor’s hidden gem. Across from the scary-looking old folk’s home at 60th and Belmont, Parkside has a great menu with fresh ingredients for yummy, inventive sandwiches, good soups, salads, treats baked on-site, plus beer and wine. Wowza! What more could you ask for? I had one of the best sammies of my life here, the turkey melt. Perfection. They also do a mean tuna melt. A comfy couch, a nice tea selection and espresso round out the offerings. Check it out.
