Mac’s Deli makes a solid sandwich. It is nothing extraordinary, but it can easily satisfy a sandwich craving without driving you to one of those many sandwich chains. I tried the Italian Sandwich there. I wasn’t feeling SUPER hungry so I opted for getting the half sandwich. Little did I know it would be a monster! The menu describes the half sub at 7 inches. The sandwich brought out to me had to have been ATLEAST10 inches. I’m not complaining though. I ate the whole thing =D I enjoyed the bread the sub came on. It was think enough to support the sandwich and didn’t get soggy at all, even with the oil and vinegar that came on the sandwich. I also enjoyed the quantity of condiments that came on the sandwich. I would have loved more peppers, but now I know for next time to request extra! My only critique was the quantity of meat on the sandwich. I normally do not like a ton of meat, but I do expect a little more then what they gave me. It was still good. I’m not sure if it was just the type of meat that they use, but I generally expect an Italian Sandwich to have a much bolder flavor because of all of those salamis. The menu offerings are vast and I am excited to try out some of the other items they have(some of the paninis looked really good!!). The service was friendly.

I have nothing bad to say about this place. Were usually here about once a week for lunch, with so many choices we never get tired of it. Owner is awesome, employees nice, big sammiches, what isnt to like? Recommend getting there early to avoid hospital lunch rush.

My grandparent’s used to own this place years ago when it was known as Rip City Subs. By far the best sandwich place. I’ve been coming here my entire life. And just to let you all know, the menu has hardly been altered! My grandparent’s made sure that when the sold the place, the contract stated that no one screws up the amazing menu they have! I only wish that instead of seeling the place, that my grandparent’s had passed it on to me.

I had a sandwich here for the first time today! Enjoyed…I like that it is close to my house. But seriously, they have a great menu and they are happy to make substitutions, which is good for me being a vegetarian. They do regular sandwiches, subs and paninis too. Nice bread choices, including Dave’s Killer Bread. They serve BREAKFAST, of which I’m a big fan, in all it’s forms. The staff was very polite and the space is clean. Full disclosure: I have a sentimental place in my heart for delis, because my grandparents loved them and took me to the local deli back home once a week. Especially recommended for folks trying to get away from the food at Providence Hospital cafeteria. If you’re not into sandwiches, they also have a great salad menu and some tasty looking pasta salads. Disliked…Nothing, really, but I don’t think this place is anything fancy — just your basic sandwich shop. Again, it’s really close to my house, so I’m going to give it a few more tries in the near future and I may update this review.

A good, solid, basic sandwich. Sometimes it’s all you want. Nothing fancy, nothing special, just an honest to goodness deli sandwich. If that’s what you’re looking for, Mac’s will serve one up right for you, and do it on the reasonably cheap. Mac’s is a down-to-business deli that offers a slew of fresh-made sandwich options including subs, regular deli sandwiches, hot sandwiches and pressed panini’s, as well as soups and salads. It’s an order and go type of place, so unless there’s a huge line, the wait seems to be pretty short. The list of sandwiches, on the other hand, is long, leaving me staring for at least a few minutes trying to figure out just what I wanted. I sampled the Super BLT, which is avocado, bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo and cream cheese on your choice of bread. They use both shredded lettuce and leaf lettuce on the sandwich, and plenty of bacon and avo. With my choice of sourdough, it was a good combo, and plenty filling. I didn’t need any chips or other accoutrement. It was a solid sandwich just as it was, and with a Vitamin Water ran me $ 7.50. Not too shabby at all. While I do have a thing for gourmet sandwiches, sometimes I really just want the basics, and I could see myself rolling through Mac’s again when the urge arises. Good stuff.

This location used to be Sandwich Depot, and I was sad to discover that Mac’s was unable to carry on the magic that defined a SD sub. I got a turkey sub with all the trimmings, and somehow it still tasted bland. The bread tasted like yesterday’s leftovers. To be fair, the portions are HUGE so you get a lot of sandwich just not a lot of flavor. Lot’s of other things on the menu, maybe some of their other sandwiches have more taste, but I won’t be returning to find out. The magic is gone.

I don’t know if they get their meat from a company or do all the work themselves, but whatever they do they are doing it right. I used to go here all the time and was always satisfied. Every type of sandwich I had was great, and that still remains to be true. I recently went on another Portland trip and we had to stop here for some lunch. I got the pastrami on rye and the wifey got the veggie on sourdough. We were both extremely pleased with the freshness of everything. They also give you some house made sandwich dressing to dip your sandwich with. The have many homemade sides. This trip we got the pea salad, it was so crisp and fresh. Soo yummy. So if you are in too mood for some good sandwiches this might be the place to go when you are in the area! If you do not like cream cheese make sure and tell them, as they put it on a lot of the sandwiches.

A five star sandwich with a one star pickle. Unilocaled this place from Providence after I arrived at my Dr’s appointment day early(Oopsie!) Hubs was with me, and I thought the best way to quell his frustration in my time management skills was by way of magical sandwich diversion: ENTER Mac’s Deli! Walked up the counter, and a very friendly staff person recommended that we share a sub. We went for the Italian Sub… I will upload the photo later, but it is a thing of beauty. It was HUGE… glad we split one. Nicely arranged with fresh condiments and a great meat/cheese/veggie ratio. I asked for light mayo, and it was still more than I would’ve liked, but, Hey! No worries! Sitting at a pub table by the window and lapping up the deliciousness of the sub sandwich almost made us glad that my appointment was tomorrow, so we could try the Rose City Sub… Was it the best sub I’ve ever had? NO, but that’s because I grew up in St. Louis, where Amighetti’s reigns supreme over all Italian subs… a loaf of real Italian bread might have made a difference, as the Parmesan bread was a little on the dense side. The only thing I didn’t like was the pickle. It was not crisp, it was not cold, it was not particularly notable, which to me makes it note-worthy. I would give it 4.5 stars if Unilocal would let me… a great sandwich at a great price in an out of the way place worth driving to!

Awesomeness… Macs is pretty much perfect, best sub I have ever had. The only downside is how much bread is on the sub loaf, but I think I will survive. If you order a full size you will have a lunch and dinner for the day, don’t be scared to order the half size you will be plenty full. The ingredients could not be better, I usually(read always) get the south star, pretty much perfection on a loaf of bread.

Mac’s is probably my favorite spot in the neighborhood, mainly based on the service. The place is run by the most friendly proprietor, and all the kids he’s got on staff are always cheerful and upbeat. If you can’t tell from other reviews here, I’m a big fan of good service, something worth remarking on because it’s so rare here in Portland. These people got a nice little shop going on here. I only wish they were open later – sometimes I’d like to have a sandwich for dinner. About the food: the subs – they are huge. I haven’t even ever seen a whole sub because it was recommended I get a half from a friend, and thank him for doing so. The half sub is like 10 inches long, and huge. I can’t say much for the meats cause they seem like they’re like those paper thin Carl Budding stuff. I could be wrong. Everything else is good. They load their sammies up with a bunch of condiments and veggies so much you have a hard time getting your mouth around it. The best thing they got going food wise is their paninis. I don’t know where they get their bread, but I’ve never had anything like it. It’s like the non-greasy, skinnier little brother of Texas Toast and has a great flavor and texture. I get the Santa Fe Chicken(i think), which is chicken breast, tomato, and some sort of yummy thousand island type sauce. I can’t say there’s anything I’ve eaten there that wasn’t good, from the pasta salads to soups to the cookies and such. Mac’s is the bees knees in my book.

What a tasty sandwich shop! I went here for the first time on Saturday. WOW, was I impressed. Not even the slow new guy(You can’t blame him… He’s new for heaven sakes!) could take a star away from this review. The staff was friendly and willing to make any adjustments we wanted to our order. You get what you pay for here. Good quality produce, meats, and bread. The sandwiches are HUGE. I was busting at the seams and begging for someone to roll me to my car after a full sandwich. The average person would be happy with a half sandwich from here. If you’re a pickle lover, you’ll like this place. They have some damn fine pickles. Both sliced to go into your sandwich, or halves to go on the side. I even saw them making a large sub. Maybe three feet or so. It looked good. So good that I think I drooled a little while watching them pile the cheese on. I posted a photo of two halves or two sandwiches. There is a lot of lettuce in the turkey cranberry, but that’s how I like it.

I like to eat sandwiches. Mac’s makes HUGE deli sandwiches that will leave you totally satisfied for an entire day(if you get a whole sandwich it may last you a week). I always get my grub to go, because they even know how to wrap a sandwich to make sure none of the goodness falls out or leaks all over you. Another part of sandwich creation that Mac’s nails is their bread is perfect. This is not a bread for Atkins fans as the bread is thick, heavy, and absorptive which means it is heaven for carb lovers. They don’t skimp on any fillings, and with all of the great combinations on the menu and daily specials you will see me here whenever I can get out there.

We went in for a quick bite for lunch. The menu is quite expansive, and the deli counter with the prepared salads is tempting. A small little shop with as many employees as patrons, one can tell that the hospital down the street fills this place with lunchtime business. Wound up splitting a whole sandwich between the two of us. A gigantic portion of food, though very reasonably priced. It would have been just as satisfying to have gotten a half sandwich and split that with some chips or a salad. A little too much bread on the sub sandwich for me, possibly next time I’ll get a regular sandwich instead. Oh, and stay clear of the chili, it looks good, but it’s just your run of the mill canned variety.

The menu is gigantic. Maybe a little too many options for me(is that even possible?). I had a hard time finding something because this is not a healthy sandwich sorta place. Just about everything comes with cheese, some with cream cheese, most have two spreads. I made the mistake of ordering a california turkey, and it had mayo AND thousand island. Overkill, much? The sandwich was pretty good, and definitely on the larger side. Most of the people in the shop were eating subs, so I will try that next time. They have a big sandwich menu, but what I didn’t see until it was too late, was the option to build your own. I’ll do that next time! They also have a cold deli case with salads, sides, and desserts packed up to go. Friendly staff too!

I’ve been out of the writing loop for a while, and have been struggling to come up with the best simile to describe the sandwich. Yes, it’s that unavoidable brown bag filler from grade school that works harmoniously with potato chips. It’s the food that anyone can make, even those of us who view our kitchens as little more than a fridge and a microwave. It’s the lunch you can eat for days, even weeks, in a row but never have exactly the same way. But for all its positive characteristics, the sandwich doesn’t really inspire the passion that other foods do. I don’t know of any office staffs that disappear to the sandwich shop on a regular basis. And nobody commemorates a milestone event, be it birthday or first divorce, by suggesting a party at a deli. And still, you can’t live without the sandwich. The best of them fill you up and provide easy portability and handling on your couch, a nearby park bench, and on airplanes. Once in a while, you come across a restaurant that offers sandwiches that doesn’t try to pull out any bells and whistles about the product. They know it’s not sushi or Jimmy Choo footwear or anything terribly exciting. But they do it so well you never feel like you’re settling for the lowest common denominator of lunch choices. At Mac’s Deli(formerly the Sandwich Depot and Deli), you get boatloads of options to stuff between two pieces of bread. You even get some decent bread choices, as they serve paninis, subs, bagels, and of course a selection of regular sliced bread. My favorite is the BLT with bacon and avocado(it’s a spread rather than slices here, so if you’re finicky about texture, this might not be your best bet). The people who work there are always very nice, and you get the feeling they enjoy serving the food they do. Plus, they’re a mere five minute walk from where I live. So I’m still at a loss for that perfect description, but I’m never stumped for where to get a good sandwich.
