This is the best dessert place I know of, and one of the best happy hour menus I know of. Their fries are also one of the best in town. Going during off hours gets you in pretty easily. I got to try the happy hour mac, the fries(seasoned with fancy aoli mayo), each like $ 5, and a delicious chocolate coconut macaroon($ 2). Good quality food and desserts. I cant wait to try the other desserts and coffees. I’ll definitely have a new place for date night.

My husband and I have become regular visitors at Papa Haydns East to partake in their lovely bottle of VanWinkle 12 year whiskey. We were surprised to find not only this rare bottle but many other fabulous choices. On each visit we have found the ENTIRE staff to be friendly and genuinely happy to see us. The food is consistently delectable and visually beautiful. We always find ourselves amazed and grateful for our dinning choice. Last night we sat at the«kitchen bar» which was a birds eye view of the kitchen staff creating their magic. We enjoyed our conversation with the Chef who gave us extra spicy pickles that only come with their fried chicken sandwich and mini crab cakes! We truly felt like we were amongst friends, comfortable and happy.

It just so happened to be a snowy day here in Portland, but while this may have prompted us to revisit the reservation, it did not deter their staff(nor several guests) from arriving. This is my tried-and-true brunch spot on the east side. It is the kind of place you go where everyone at the table seems to order the same thing(Eggs Benedict). The hollondaise is on the creamy side, the ham is salty and the bread is toasted perfectly. But don’t let this star dish keep you from exploring the other brunch options here. The blueberry pancakes are drenched in syrup and topped with fresh berries and four thick-cut, perfectly cooked pieces of bacon. Or try their granola– steel cut and the yogurt seems to take on almost a whipped quality. Papa Haydn’s East is also a terrific and surely almost unequaled spot for dessert, too, with several permanent items(try the peanut butter ganache or my favorite, the banana coconut cream pie) as well as several seasonal and rotating favorites. If you’re in the mood for a cocktail, they have a full bar. Don’t hesitate to order a spicy signature Bloody Mary or a mimosa with your meal.

This place is amazing. Great food fantastic wine great service, what could be better. Never had a problem here. Everyone is super friendly and helpful. Great for a casual lunch or a hot date parking can be tricky but way better then the 23rd location.

Looking at my past reviews, they’ve been up and down and most recently were up. Sadly, we returned for lunch today and it was pretty disappointing, from the main course to, yes, the dessert. I have been coming here for over 3 decades and it’s just not the same anymore. The server was pleasant but ultimately, if the food’s not on par it’s not worth it. Plus it was $ 55 for LUNCH which consisted of 2 beverages, my husband’s sandwich, my small cup of French onion soup with side salad, and 2 desserts. Way out of control pricing. The soup had a very strange flavor to it and halfway through the meal I knew it wasn’t going to end well intestinally. The white chocolate mint cake was absolutely terrible — just a sugar laden, artificial colored goopy mess on top of chocolate cake. My husband said his meal was OK but nothing he’d return for, and at these prices, it’d better be crazy good. I think it’s the end of an era for us and Papa Haydn’s. :(

Came here because the desserts were highly recommended by some friends. Ordered the crème brûlée and the banana coconut cake for take-out. The order took about 25 minutes to come out. They both tasted average. There was absolutely nothing special about them. I really have nothing more to say. Service wasn’t the best. It was a take-out order so I have no comment about the place’s atmosphere. I’m still friends with the people that recommended this place.

We stopped here for an after dinner cocktail and some dessert last night. We were promptly seated and our waiter was polite enough, took our drink order and it arrived in a few minutes. At that time we also ordered a cobbler to share. Approximately 25 minutes later our waiter reappeared and informed us that he lost our order and asked what we ordered again. He did apologize but it was hardly sincere, and offered no compensation for waiting nearly half an hour for a dessert that took two minutes to prepare. The worst part, the cobbler sucked to put it plainly. The wheat muffin on top was so stale tasting that pretty much all we ate was the ice cream. I was so disappointed that I didn’t even tip, which I have probably done a handful of times in my life.

Part 6 of my Oregon Adventures! «There are two kinds of people in the world: those who love chocolate, and communists.» –Leslie Moak Murray Papa Haydn serves up the very best of decadent and beautiful desserts! Their shop is cozy and inviting, although crowded even in evenings. Space is limited and feels rather cramped if there are more than a few people looking into their pastry display. I’m not counting this against them… it’s a sign that their pastries are delicious! Our group of four each picked out a dessert to-go, which was wrapped up nicely for us to enjoy when we got back to our host’s place. The hubs and I shared a banana cream pie and a slice of chocolate cake. Both were lovely! They have an amazingly large selection of yummy treats to chose from! If I lived in the area, I would certainly purchase cakes from them to celebrate any special occasion.

Went with a group of girlfriends on Saturday, Sept. 5th around 5:30PM. We were warned the wait was long if we didn’t get reservations. However, we were sat on the patio right away on a gorgeous evening. FYI it was busier an hour later. We all ordered the French Onion soup and enjoyed it. I chose the Fried Chicken sandwich as my entrée with the Gorgonzola dressing on the side. Good choice too b/c although I enjoy Gorgonzola on my salad, it had no business on my fried chicken. Each of us ladies ordered two desserts a piece(1 for me, 1 for the hungry man at home). Pricey per slice, but it’s worth the splurge! My dream job would be to work in their bakery upstairs. What fun it must be to create such beautiful sweets! Our server was excellent as well as other touch-point service members! We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves under the grape vines and beside a beautiful fresh garden.

Wonderful birthday meal. They have a great patio in the summer. The only thing is that they don’t have the baked Alaska at this location which is my all time favorite dessert and I was hoping to order that for my birthday. However, our service was great, drinks were cool and refreshing and of course the dessert was phenomenal!

Papa Haydn is outstanding, overall. They are known for their desserts, but don’t make the mistake of just going there for dessert. If you’ve not had their cuisine, you definitely owe it to yourself to check it out. Papa Haydn is one of a handful of establishments where you can tell straight away that there is a very talented chef at the helm who is very passionate about his or her craft. We took my friend and his wife here for dinner during their vacation, and he put their double-cut, bone-in, house-smoked pork chop at a tie or first place for the best thing he’s ever eaten. The desserts are all top-notch, and are served as works of art. They’re seriously so nice-looking you almost feel bad diving in. The sauces are the most amazingly flavorful items, and can be purchased in jars so you can take them home with you. Why only four stars, then? One reason. The croque monsieurs are horrendous. I don’t know why they leave this item on the menu, nor why they are so inferior to the rest of their fare, but it is not even in the same league as the rest of their menu offerings. Making croque monsieurs is very labor-intensive undertaking, and there are definitely corners cut here. You can also order full cakes for birthdays, etc. A really nice touch is that the name plate for birthday cakes is a full chocolate bar with the celebrant’s name hand-written in white chocolate and embedded in the bar(yes, they actually make a chocolate bar from scratch just for the birthday boy or girl). I’d heartily recommend Papa Haydn. They’re top notch for dinner, dessert, or both.

I have been frequenting Papa Haydn for more than a decade and, surprisingly, have not written a review. I think the first time I went here was during high school to catch up with my middle school art teacher. I remember having for lunch the sweet potato ravioli and it was delicious then sharing the Autumn Meringue, which was a little to rich for my taste. Zagat named Papa Haydn West best dessert place in Portland in the late 90s-early 2000s. When we were home during college, my friends and I would go to the west side location for dessert all the time. I was hooked the first time I tried their Boccone Dolce. Love, love, love – probably my favorite dessert ever! Parking on 23rd could be inconvenient and, for a period of time, they had their own parking lot across the street. The wait at the west side was getting ridiculous… its fancier looking but they have the same desserts at their east side location. Papa Haydn East is closer to home, never a wait, the atmosphere is more charming and cozy. I always go to this location now. I love the patio in the summer time because of all the sunflowers they have in the garden and service is always really friendly. They do change up their starters, sandwiches, and lunch/dinner specials with fresh, locally available products. Food is pretty good, but what keeps me coming back is that their desserts are always consistent. The price over the years have steadily increase, a slice Boccone Dolce was under $ 7 but now $ 9.25 – almost worth it to buy the whole cake for around $ 50. I have ordered cakes here before and they could be very accommodating. A 48-hour is recommended but you are in a bind and needed something sooner… call because they normally could fulfill your request. Really good customer service and undeviating desserts.

Aaah, i hate to be hating on a sweets place… Bc i looove me some sweets. This place does«hungry eyes» to perfection. Everything looks like«if you don’t pick me, you lose». Confections outta choco, meringue, ice cream(classier when referred to as glacé with a jaunty accent on the e) — plus fresh berries and sweet sauces. I tried the boco-something. Meringue with layers of cream and berries. Tall. White. Gorgeous. Too sweet. Then the raspberry tarte. Ok. Cream was bit cloying. But the crust was good. Then the choco bomb. Good but tasted the tiniest bit tired. At the end of the night i was hauled away by ambulance due to sky high blood sugar.

Yum! Who doesn’t want to go to a dessert restaurant?! They have so many good good desserts on the menu that you definitely can find something for everyone! Tarts, cakes, cobblers, etc. So many good things! I went with a group of 6 so I can’t even tell you everything we ordered but what I can tell you is that we were all very happy with our decisions! I had the seasonal rasberry tarte. It was to die for. Everyone’s portions were much larger than they could have eaten at the restaurant so that totally makes up for the price. It’s kind of like a 2 dessert in 1 because I think everyone took ½ home! I know I was really excited to eat mine the next morning for breakfast. I felt bad because our group got there about 10 minutes before closing and stayed a lot longer, but the staff were really great and they didn’t rush us to order or get out. They let us stay as long as we liked and still presented us with great service. What’s great too is that they have a pretty large patio as well as a side with a display case for quick to go orders!

My Mother took Rebecca and I here for dinner. Glad she did. We started with a simple green salad. As is typical these days in Portland, it came with blue cheese crumble and filberts; that’s right, filberts, not hazelnuts. Just the right size and not over dressed. Great start. Mother had the short rib, she loves her meat. It looked. Bit done, but she had no trouble cutting it. She is almost 92, so tenderness is important. Rebecca loved her Dover sole over rutabaga smashed. Both were great. I had Hama Hama clams served in a strong broth over ramen noodles, mushrooms and green onions. This was luscious. They had a nice Sancerre on the menu. Our serve actually was familiar with it. It was a good rcommendation. Great meal and, of course, we ate dessert. Mother had the lemon curd tart; she adores lemon inspired dessert. This was the real deal. Rebecca and I shard boccone dolce. I hope I spelled that right. It was made with bananas, strawberries and Marion berries. This was a great version. I wish this place was closer. It is still tried and true. The desserts remain first rate. The meal was great. The service was attentive, without being obsequious. We need to remember those places that have stood the test of time. This is one of them. Glad we went.

We had friends visiting and wanted to meet them for dessert. According to Unilocal, this place is kid friendly. Well folks, sadly, Unilocal was wrong. I received the stink eye from so many employees every.single.time our kids made a peep and when my daughter was tapping her fork on the table(for 5 seconds before I could reach across the table to take her fork), the waiter told me they had«just spent thousands of dollars on them». Our dessert was mediocre at best(my husband thought his tasted like fish) and I was annoyed at the overall attitude of elitism that oozed from here. We won’t be back.

Papa Haydn is a cute café/dessert local restaurant in Portland. You can get café food and wine here but is most popular for their desserts. Near the entrance, there’s a display case of their cakes and other desserts so you can take a look before being seated. The restaurant is tight between the tables. Our friends were craving for a sweet fix so our local friends recommended this place. Our group of six ordered 3 items and it was bit overwhelming, the portions are very generous. And they all had rich flavor to it. We ordered the truffle cake, panna cotta, and the pumpkin maple mascarpone which was $ 8.95 each. All were delicious but a little too posh for my liking. The crowd is a mix of young and older folks. Service was great!

I’ve been here many times, but this experience was special. Came here for a very late lunch with mom. Waiter was very friendly! The French Onion Soup(shared) was perfect! I had Hunter’s Pasta — full of flavor! And mom and I shared a slice of the Baccone Dolce cake — which was delicious! Perfect meal, great experience… definitely coming back!

After dinner and a show, we headed out to SE for dessert. Since we arrived late, I was a bit nervous about the selection that would be available and I was right. My first two chocolate cake choices were sold out, so I had to settle for the Scharffen Berger Bombe, which was delicious, albeit my third choice. The meringue wasn’t my favorite but the chocolate amazingness made up for it. We had also ordered French fries, which were okay, but not a «wow». They were a bit over-done for my taste. Their aoli dipping sauce was tasty. The service really made up for any negatives. The manager made sure after my first failed attempts to order something that I had something that I wanted. They also went so far as to dress up my dessert in celebration of my birthday. She also brought us two complimentary macaroons, a chocolate and Neapolitan one. These were delicious! Our server was very attentive even though they were very busy. We will definitely be returning, hopefully next time for triple chocolate cake.

3 stars for brunch, 3.5 stars for dessert. Desserts are famous here and I would recommend the Georgian peanut butter mouse and the Triple Chocolate Cake. Brunch was decent, but there were salmon several fish bones in my eggs benedict with salmon cakes. My friend who ordered the same had bones in his salmon cakes as well. Service was excellent.
