I ordered two tacos — a mixed taco with trompa, buche and carnitas and one of the birria. Nothing like a little lips and esophagus to get your day started. :) The waitress brought over some tasty chips and salsa to tide me over while I waited. Home made tortillas as advertised. The mixed taco was rich and flavorful with all the different cuts melding together. It would have done well with a touch of salt. The birria taco was ok but nothing to write home about. While I enjoy the feeling of goat fat coating my mouth as much as the next person, it was just a little much. These aren’t those petite tacos you get at some places — the tacos were so big that I couldn’t finish both. I’d give it a second try the next time I’m in Pomona.

Went here with my inlaws… tacos are ok… they have home made torillas… fyi tortillas are pretty big… there special birria is just ok. I would not go back on my own will or if i was paying the bill… If someone is spotting me sure why not.

I went down to El Cabrito of an overcast Saturday at noon in Pomona. What do I do? I asked myself. I know, I’ll go to El Cabrito, I told myself. Why? Because it is there. I’ve passed it so many times. it’s closed late(hours posted say it closes at six most days), so other times I’ve veered in that direction it hasn’t worked out. It is billed as a «restaurante familiar,» so there is wait service inside. It is cash only, but they do have one of those annoying ATM machines that charges a bunch and then prints a receipt and the establishment gives you the change. The walls are of painted brick, with paintings of pastoral scenes in Mexico. And a couple leather horse heads. Banda playing on the stereo. I was planning to take my order to go, so I walked up to the counter and perused a menu. Their sign advertises«tortillas hechos a mano,» so that sounded promising. I decided on two tacos(with the homemade tortillas, they’re a lot bigger than the little taqueria tacos). Also available on the menu: tortas, burritos, and sopes, with meat choices of pollo, carne asada, carnitas, buche, birria. Quesadillas and quesadillas fritas, with option to stuff ‘em with meat. They were also serving menudo today(and Sundays). I went for carne asada and carnitas. If I’d had enough cash on hand for a third taco, I’d have gotten birria. But it’s a good thing because two was pretty filling. The carne asada is flavorful, better than I was expecting. No unwelcome hard/chewy business. It was a touch dry, perhaps. The carnitas – excellent! Big chunks of sweet, tender, moist pork. They have two salsas, both of the pureed persuasion. One looks like a more traditional salsa though, and is mild. That is what I would have went home with. Since I sat at the table, I got to scoop on the bright red, brightly flavored and more spicy salsa taquera. Also provided: Mexican oregano, dried red chili flakes, and onions, cilantro, limes, and radishes at the ice bar. I think next time I’ll try a quesadilla frita and a birria taco. And oh, yeah, the homemade tortillas are very good. Not too thick, but supple. I went home and washed it down with a King Cobra. Salud!
