Tomo in Plymouth was reborn since a crisis at Sanpei Japanese restaurant. The chief sushi chef used to work at Sanpei. He moved to Tomo. The floor manager was also changed. They coordinate current Tomo and Tomo’s foods have been improved dramatically by them. The sushi, Japanese meal, chef’s special of today, are authentic Japanese food. I’m happy they are close to our house. Awesome!

You really cannot beat the value of the BBQ bento box. Not saying that people who order differently are stupid(but they really are) but there are so many good dishes from which to pick. Sushi is really great. Service is attentive without being intrusive. Enjoyed my dinner. Will return. Recommend!

The Tomo Roll was amaaaazing. We also enjoyed the spicy tuna and spicy salmon rolls. The crunch crunch roll was a little disappointing because the shrimp was not really crisp inside. It looked like real crab in there, but overall it was dry and not that crunchy. We also tried the seaweed salad, which was ok but I preferred the dressing more at other places. The spicy sauce was not crazy spicy, but we liked the flavor a lot… maybe a little toasted sesame oil in there? Enjoyable dinner. Excellent service. Fresh, and I liked the flavor and texture of the sushi rice. Expensive, but sushi always is.

When out Korean friends told us that their go to place for Bi Bim Bap was this little«Japanese sushi bar» I wasn’t sure I heard right. I’ve been eating BBB since 1983(thank you Ann Arbor BBB dives) and I’ve had a few – hundred. This really was great. The hottest hot bowl in the business and thus the crispiest fried rice at the bottom of the bowl. Very reasonable prices. Get your Bi Bim Baps here! Oh and they have sushi…

I asked for spicy mayo sauce and they took 20 minutes to give it to me. The waitress totally forgot about me even asking her. They never once asked if we wanted refills. The food was decent but the service was terrible.

Last Saturday was so beautiful that my hubby and I hung outside and did yard work all day… after a while dinner time came around and I realized that I did not plan anything Tomo’s it is! We purchased a groupon for $ 15 for a discount on at least a $ 30 purchase… This is never a hard thing at a Japanese/Korean place. We arrived at about 6:30 and the place was almost completely empty! There was a couple with two younger kids and us. As always, we have a little bit of a struggle there but the food is pretty decent. We asked for water right away while we looked at the beer selection. When our waters came back to the table, we asked for a beer and were told that we had to get it from the waitress… Ok… She came back for our orders not too long after that, we ordered a couple of appetizers, beer and a main dish. The delicious salads came, the soup came but still no beer. By the time our first appetizer came out, I asked for a beer again. And we still waited. The sashimi app was good, 6 slices of fish for $ 8. The kanisunomono was good and decently priced at $ 4, there were only a few cucumbers though. The California rolls were average, but it is tough to have a stellar simple dish hubby’s main entrée came out… and immediately after some gentleman came running out asking if it was the bulgogi… He grabbed the dish off of the table and he brought it back with some meat thrown on top. It was decent but the egg was solidly cooked as opposed to be truly mixed up in the dish. And finally the beer came. Over all the food is decent, this is the first time in a long time that they had everything that we ordered… We will probably be back but will never rush back

Good to very good Korean and Japanese food. I’m not the most knowledgeable person in the world when it comes to sushi, but I do loves me some Korean barbecue. At various times we’ve tried the bulgogi, spicy pork, and chicken/steak teriyaki. All in all, the food is pretty good and the service is the same; very friendly, but nothing exceptional. I do wish they had more of the side dishes you usually get with Korean BBQ(hello, kimchi? anyone? anyone?), but the little salad(great dressing) and miso soup you get to start off hit the spot I will mention the last time we went in on a Saturday evening, around 7. We wanted bulgogi this time around and was told they were all out. At 7… on a Saturday evening… This is one of THE big Korean dishes, not something obscure. It’s kind of like an all-night coney island running out of chili just after midnight. Seemed kind of odd, especially since the place was half full at most. Anyway, we settled on the spicy pork. Very tasty, nice and spicy, which is A-OK with me. Dressed with onions, mushrooms, maybe another veggie or two. However, when we got the the end of the dish, there was a LOT of oil left in the bottom of the pan. The food wasn’t «greasy» per se, just an inordinate amount of oil. Anyway, they do a decent job. It’s a good Groupon pickup whenever they’re offering one. We don’t live nearby, but we pass through the area enough that we try to keep them in our stockpile.

The service was so bad I didn’t even stay for the food. The drinks got dropped and that was all she wrote. The servers spent the next almost 10 minutes bussing tables and not taking orders. Will not be coming back.

I went in this place with my wife and 4 year old daughter. They greeted us promptly and happily. It went all wrong from there. I went into the bathroom and it was not maintained. The urinal was broken and appeared to be for awhile. The paper towels were not in the dispenser. The area outside the bathroom is where they stored the dirty used bottles. The kitchen did not look very clean. I went back to my table and waited patiently for a server to take my order. We waited almost 10minutes and then left. I looked around and we were one of three tables in the restaurant. The other two did not have food in front of them, they did have dirty dishes in front of them. This tells they were done with their meals. So we left loudly to my disappointment nobody tried to stop us. My daughter wanted milk which was on the drink menu but he said they did not have any. They also did not offer me a sashimi or sushi menu. I would not recommend this place at all.

This place is REALLY nice, the meau is big. The prices are pretty high though so make sure your wallet is full of cash when you leave the house.

I really enjoyed their sushi! I am a sushi fanatic and it is often difficult to find good sushi in a state far from the ocean. Plus, I like variety and ‘hard to find sushi’ such as lobster or clam sushi and it is nice to see some of this here. I had the lobster roll and volcano roll, both were excellent. Prices, I would say were comparable to other ‘better’ sushi places(it was nice to have a Groupon deal). Service was a bit slow, luckily we were not in a hurry(1 waitress and then a second one showed up for a restaurant full of people). I would def recommend it to someone who wants to try something new and has the time to do so.

I’ve been craving their wonderful sushi ever since I left. I feel like a pregnant woman.(: Most definitely a place to check out, great service and delicious food. Although a little pricey, you get what you pay for!

I was wary of trying this place because of all the bad reviews but I had a good experience. Got the udon soup with fried tofu(can’t remember the exact item name; it was under the noodles menu). Tasty! Came with little mushrooms and green beans which I was not expecting. True to the other reviews, service was okay at least they got me in/out in a reasonable time during my lunch hour. Soup took a little time to get out but that makes me think that it was actually heated and prepared, not just nuked. Well-decorated for a strip mall restaurant too…

Used to be one of my favorites for sushi, but I doubt I’ll be going out of my way to return. Sushi is a bit overpriced for the quality; passable but not outstanding. Chicken katsudon is good(though be careful in ordering this: on my most recent visit, I was served the pork version initially, even though my/our order/receipt clearly stated«chicken.»), though, again, not particularly remarkable. Where Tomo really fails lately is service. During my most recent visit, there was a grand total of one server for the entire restaurant. It wasn’t particularly busy that day, but with multiple dishes going to each table, he was simply stretched too thin: getting something as simple as a drink refill took upwards of 25 minutes, and fixing our pork-instead-of-chicken katsudon issue took almost 45 minutes to resolve(as we opted for a replacement dish to go). With better(both in food quality and service) options available closer to home, I don’t think I’ll be visiting Tomo again, Groupon(which I did not use) or no.

A small Japanese-Korean restaurant is located in a strip mall off 5 Mile in Plymouth, Tomo is simply and tastefully decorated. On a recent lunch, the meal started with the seafood tempura which consisted of 2 shrimp, carrot, zucchini and green pepper slices, lightly coated in batter, deep fried. This appetizer was perfectly prepared and tasted light and crunchy, not greasy at all. However, the dish was expensive given the portion size and perhaps not appropriately named. For the entrée, I enjoyed the bulgogi bibimbap which consisted of grilled marinated beef, sunny-side up egg, both served over steamed white rice and veggies in a hot skillet. The dish was so tasty, it did not need the sweet chili sauce — although was amazing with it. Be warned that the dish is huge so prepare to take home leftovers. As for sushi, I sampled the mackerel, yellowfin tuna, and tamago. I have high standards for mackerel and unfortunately, the one served here did not meet it. The tuna and tamago were great, although portion sizes were a smidge smaller here than elsewhere. A small salad and miso soup were also served. Both were rather bland. So a meal here(and pricing) is uneven. Some items on the menu are outstanding. Others are subpar so experimentation is a must. Service was good, both the hostess and the waitress were responsive to questions, prompt with drinks, and cleared dishes quickly.

I was so happy to have a sushi place that was close to me but alas, the sushi is not very fresh nor tasty and way over priced. The good thing is that the Korean food is awesome! The Korean food was ok at first but it has recently improved. I really like the spicy squid, and youkejang. The bibimbap is good too and is served not in a stone bowl but plate. The reason why I give it 4 stars is because there is always a $ 30 for $ 15 groupon.

I dined at the Troy location about a month ago and like most of the reviews on Unilocal, the food was decent but the service was horrible. Nevertheless, since it’s not easy to find a good Korean restaurant this area, last night we decided to give the Plymouth location a shot. The interior of the restaurant was clean with minimal décor. We were greeted by the sushi chef upon arrival and seated by the waiter right away. One of the things I didn’t like about this place is the lack of variety and quantity in side dishes. We were given two tiny side dishes: kimchi radish and white kimchi, with the first tasting okay and the latter totally bland. I guess I’m used to expecting at 4 plus side dishes at Korean restaurants because every Korean restaurant I’ve visited so far has given me 4 to 15 side dishes depending on the place. We ordered Bulgogi BBQ combo with the spicy tofu soup. The Bulgogi portions were generous and the taste was good. The tofu soup was quite spicy. Pros: good food, decent service Cons: Minimal side dishes, rice refill cost $ 1

I see some negative reviews here but mostly they seem to be focused on the service. We picked up a carry-out last night for 6 people and the sushi was first grade quality! We ordered a variety of rolls that covered all bases and each one was very good. Also a Korean dish and a japanese noodle dish. All of the people at our home loved the food. I can‘t comment on the service since we had a carry-out…but the order was ready, waiting and correct at the time stated. And the food was good. The place was very crowded and the majority of the people eating there were Orientals… always a good sign. Next time I will try to eat inside.

Sushi is not supposed to be cheap people… if it is, you can only assume the quality is going to be mediocre. I came here with my boyfriend a few months ago and absolutely love this place. We got one sushi roll(it may have been the 911 roll) and I got the katsu curry which is the best I’ve had in Michigan and my boyfriend got yookaejang. I was so surprised at how homemade both dishes tasted I couldn’t stop telling my boyfriend. I’m über excite that they have a groupon deal out now and can’t wait to go back to get the korean BBQ grill! I thought the service was great. It might have been because it wasn’t that busy but the waitresses were nice and made sure we were happy with the food.
