Built on the original site of a hot spring that became a popular bathouse in the 1800s, the grand entrance of The Palm Springs Spa Hotel and Bathouse typifies modern architecture. This elegant walkway, landscaped with a sublime rocky creek path that winds among sharply pruned yuccas and giant aloes, led us directly to the spa. Enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff whisked us off on a tour the moment we inquired about the facility. At first we thought we were in for a hard sell, like we were in Bangkok letting a stripper take us up an elevator, but the room we entered felt like the salon scene in film The Women. Patrons glided about in a relaxed, steamy haze and reclined in cushioned lounge chairs. Attendants stood ready with towels and gentle directions. I knew immediately that all my Joan Crawford fantasies could come true in this place and that my wife and I would be very happy here. We indulged in three saunas,(wet, dry, and eucalyptus,) a waiting room, a relaxing room, another relaxing room, and the private tiled tubs for the signature experience, the taking of the waters. Plus, our day pass included use of the outdoor pools, two with magic water and two without, all varying degrees of comfortable and warm.
