On the review of stacy w, I called Tamika yesterday and she was able to squeeze me in today. I was having a serious Britney moment and wanting to shave the sheit off again and be done with it. Some black women love hair, love having their hair done, go every week. I am a cheap ho, hate having my hair done, hate waiting, hate pain, hate it all, but I like having my hair look good. I am still waiting for the wash and go, but totally feminine(long) hair cut to appear. I was feeling frumpy and having hair done is a good start out of a funk. As stacy said a lot of places doing black hair are out of this world expensive. Hello. black and brown people make up a disproportionately large portion of low wage jobs, how the hell am I supposed to spend 120 on a perm? Money better spent on a 401k. Laugh at the naps, I don’t care. Okay, wait, sorry, so back to my story so I get there, it’s in the hood, but the clientele isn’t hood, they were holding discussions on the housing market, and watching the news. It reminded me of the place I would accompany my mom(when jeri curls were in style) as a child. When I called I was a dufus and pretty spastic. I didn’t know what I wanted, I just wanted something that I was not currently in possession of. Okay, I just wanted to feel better. Does that make sense? I spent hours looking at Borders for a style in magazines. I had nothing in mind. I finally found a pic I liked and couldn’t wait to get to my appointment. The biggest con of my night, time. I know, I know, it is to be expected when going to an African-American stylist, but I hate that. My appointment was at 6:30, but I didn’t get touched until like 7:30 — 7:45. I got home at 12:45, but I got lost on the way back so some of that time is just my dumb self getting lost. If I hadn’t been so adamant on a hair change I would have left. I am super impatient, ask anybody. However, I was able to see her go from mid to finish on the person in front of me, and after gluing tracks in she styled the shit out of it. No lie. So I was ready and fully confident when it was my turn. She is going to tell you like it is. If you haven’t been taking care of your hair, expect to hear about it. My hair is much shorter(broke off) on top than in the back, but the style I wanted was so cute. She pretty much told me I had beyonce ambitions with a toni braxton reality. She recommended getting tracks in the front if I wanted that style. I did not want tracks. I am not a hair person. Tracks require a certain level of care, and I sweat(which kudo to her she noticed immediately that I do not take well to heat. She stated, you are going to need sewn in tracks). She listened and clowned and sometime she was just quiet, which is cool, people talking about nothing bore me. On the wall their is a plaque where she won first place for short styles, long styles and colors. I asked her did she win all of the awards and she said yes. I asked her was everyone else mad cause she didn’t leave any for them. She laughed and said no. She also said she was just getting started. Talk to her for a minute and look at the work she does and you know that someday she’ll be on Oprah telling her how she styled the new look for so and so or you’ll be picking up the Tamika line of products. She apprenticed with her mom(in the same shop) who I saw hook up a very nice style while I was waiting. She’s really cool and really professional. When it was my time for the most part it was my time and I don’t feel like she shortchanged me as the night went on. I came in seriously underestimating what my true needs were and the time constraints. She made fun of me, but not in a way that put me on the defensive(which isn’t hard). Def recommended! Putting pictures up of the fresh do. Can you see the tracks? I didn’t take a before, but if you hit up my myspace page you’ll see some styles. Oh and cash only. Update: So I walk into work and I don’t speak to a full two-third of these hating people. One of the nice people complimented my hair. The girl I can’t stand most immediately started typing, I am assuming to her companion in hating. I am looking around at the mexican girls with their(totally tacky) brassy highlights, blonde ambition gone wrong for sure. And the«Oakland» girl who cut her hair in China bangs without realizing she had a face shaped like a melon. I look cute and sophisticated and they look like little girls playing in they mommas product. hahaha. Worth every dime! Oh and I am a tad evil.

HEYIFYOU’REAFRICANAMERICANANDNEED A PERSON who can take good care of you hair – here’s the place. I just moved into the area 6 months ago from LA… from where i currently live there isn’t a place that specializes in black hair… if so they are WAY expensive. i found this place through a friend and she suggested TAMIKA she’s GREAT for perms, press and curls, weaves, and she’s noted for doing great short hair styles. she’s won numerous hair awards(which is kind comforting) and she’s very nice and organized. ladies(and gents) don’t come to this place expecting coffee, water, tea and spa music(lol)…this is down home hair salon where bootleggers come and sale you stuff and tons of hair magazines. piled to the wall. there are services for men too… Tamika is the daughter of the owner SHERRY’S KLIPAPPEAL. her prices are reasonable and everybody is nice. *****UPDATE****** so Tamika has moved to San Leandro(yeeaaa closer to meeee) the name of the shop is now SEDUCTIVESTYLES and has a new shop number(510) 276‑6344. prices and styles are the same. cute and very clean hair salon right next to a gas station(if u need to make an ATM run) flat screen TV, lots of magazines, i believe sooner or later u can make credit card payments.
