Hegenburger’s Restaurant

I brought 4 co-​workers here for lunch on a Tuesday. It’s a small operation, seems family run. Ordering is a little complicated — there are more than a few options to choose from — but the staff makes it easy.
I ordered the Hegenburger (¹⁄₃ lb) with no cheese, bacon and avocado, on a whole wheat bun, with a side of sweet potato fries, and a drink. All of these substitutions add up — I paid $ 14.25 — so be aware.
The burger was juicy and flavorful, good amount of bacon, skimpy on the avocado. There was no need to add ketchup or mayo. I’d get this again.
The sweet potato fries were crisp but bland. Could use a shake or two of salt.
I wish I had asked for a side of ranch. I would not get them again.
My coworkers got onion rings, which I mooched a couple of. These are the star of sides — arguably among the best onion rings I’ve gotten at a burger joint.
The burger was really good, and worth the trip.

Looking outside this place is very deceiving! Located at a corner off of Hegenberger Road in Oakland looking like there are no windows when driving past and an open gated front door left open. When we pulled up there were three Oakland PD Ford Explorers parked out front. A lady actually came up to a colleague of mine to ask if it’s ok to eat here right now because of all of the police cars outside. Truth be known that there were about 6 – 8 OPD officers having lunch.
Anyways, coming in there’s a sandwich board showing their specials and saying that they use 100% Niman Ranch Ground Beef and how their burgers were ¹⁄₃ pound. Good beef for burgers, right? Impressive again for a joint that doesn’t look too appealing from the outside.
Ordered the Signature Burger which was a regular «Hegen Burger» but had garlic and onion in the party. Sounded good!
Burger had its good amount of grease, but not too greasy and the patty was flavorful and noticed the garlic and onion. Bun and produce were fresh as well. Got the combo so the fries were fresh and crispy. Not bad at all for $ 10.50 including fries and a drink!
Good experience here and a good burger at a great price! Only here in Oakland for meetings, but definitely a «go-​to» place for lunch.

A great family owned burger joint! We go out of our way to come here. Everything is super fresh and tastes delicious. I love the mushroom burger and curly fries! Really friendly service as well.

Nice little hole in the wall family owned place. Not fancy but a very decent burger and fries for the location and the money.
This spot is very near the arena and we go here for lunch sometimes when doing set days for ballgames.
Not a lot to write about except you will like this place for what it is.

Trying to eat before my flight, lucky for us, the shushing place next door was too slow. The service at Hagenburger was amazing, the Nitro Stella was so good, the fries were great but the grass fed bacon cheese burger was perfect!

Still a five star spot that was taken over by new owners months ago but I’m now barely getting around to updating my review. The staff is extraordinarily friendly and go out of their way to provide great service and food. From the burgers to the teriyaki chicken, everything is worth a try. The outside may not look like much but looks are deceiving in this case. I would recommend this place to anyone. If you’re going for a burger try their Signature burger.

Stopped in for breakfast again with a colleague. Sign says opens at 9, but we were there and the door was open. Asian lady that barely speaks English was there. She sure can whip up whatever you want in a hurry. Their stupid credit card machine didn’t work (I hope) so I paid cash. In the end, good, wholesome breakfast. New, favorite, ad if you read my previous comments, ONLY place for breakfast on Hegenberger. Maybe try them for lunch next time?

The quality of the burger beat Mel’s in SF. Yes, i did say that. The service was great, the fish burger and tuna sandwich were also awesome. I don’t know why one of the previous ‘commenters’ was crying about skinny fries because they do have steak fries (just look at the menu). I will be back with my whole squad again.

Have not been here for years, backed when I worked nearby. Still great burgers as before. Pleasant counter service. You can order ahead, which is helpful since burgers are always made to order. Skip the fast food chains and come here!

The food was OK, but nothing special; wouldn’t go out of my way for it. Had the spaghetti N Meatballs. The service was poor as the servers were more focused on their boyfriends and cell phones than providing good service.

Some places will say they have fresh meat but these are actual hand made Burgers. Very tasty and the staff is very accommodating. If you’re a burger fan you should try this place. thanks Unilocalers for a great find.

Small hamburger joint with a beat up parking lot and a real dumpy, road house feel inside, featuring posters of local professional sports teams and a flat screen TV showing sports.
Counter service only. Service was competent. My classic burger was very tasty. The fries were thin, could have been a bit more crunchy for my taste.
Good local burger place.

BIG. GREASY. YUMMY. pricey. I had a turkey burger combo with garlic fries for $ 10.95. So good! The fries taste just like fair fries and the burger is huge! The fries were on the greasy/​oily side. The way they package them for take-​out makes them super greasy and basically dripping on to everything.
Building: The place is hard to find without GPS. Basically look for the Subway Sandwiches sign past the Courtyard/​Marriot and past Yoshino’s. It’s a small space with a classic diner feel.
Service: It feels like a family business. Nice English speaking people with a smile.
I recommend it to anyone.

Wow! Great burger. A message to the 20 cars in the line at the hamburger franchise across the street…“stop waiting, cross the street. and enjoy a juicy, made to order burger”.

Man, the food here is phenomenal.
The milkshakes are made with real ice cream that you have to scoop into the cup and real milk.
They make your food to order, the way you like it.
The staff are very polite and courteous.
Truly all about the customer service and needs.
All I can say now is:
YOU’VE GOT TO TRY THIS PLACE.

Their gourmet burgers are TOPS! Make sure u ask for GOURMET. What that is is a garlic & herb mixture they add to the beef patties to give it a unique flavor.
Their garlic fries are to die for also!
So many items I havnt tried yet. can’t wait!

Went here for lunch. Hubby and I had the number two which is a double hamburger. The only difference was I had the French fries and hubby had onion rings. The meat in the burgers were pretty good. I especially liked the French fries. The fries were cooked well. The fries reminded me of McDonald’s. My daughter had the junior hamburger which was just meat, cheese and ketchup. I just wish they sold just the meat without the bread cause the bread made it to filling for me. I still enjoyed the burger. I washed it down with diet Coke.
The dining area had plenty of tables, two big screen televisions and one bathroom for customers only. You need to get a key to use the bathroom. Location is a little hole in the wall near the Oakland BART. The guy at the register was super nice and friendly. He even gave my daughter a chocolate wrapped dessert. So sweet of him. That did not come with her meal. I’d definitely would come back if we were in the area.

Located near the OAK airport/​block from Marriott Courtyard. Owned by a nice couple. Diner-​ish in style. There wasn’t anything else around so based on Unilocal reviews I went for a burger and fries. Awesome crispy fries freshly cooked per order. Burger the same… large patty thrown on the grill in eye shot. Perfect for an $ 8 dinner with a Coca Cola.
