Halau i Ka Pono – The Hula School of Chicago

I’ve been regularly taking the monthly hula intensives with Kumu June for several months now, and it’s amazing. Hula is a beautiful form of expression and Kumu June has a gentle and precise way of teaching. I always feel encouraged and supported. In addition to learning dances and chants, I have learned a lot about Hawai’ian history and the significant role of nature in my life. The whole experience is grounding and transforming. At the last intensive we got to make our own ipu’s ~ that’s the hollow gourd that is used for percussion in the chanting. Having no previous music-​training experience, it’s quite the adventure to be learning how to play the ipu and chant the stories. Kumu June, as I said, is so encouraging and enthusiastic with her instruction it’s a total joy to learn. Her generosity is a great gift. If you have any curiosity at all about hula I HIGHLY recommend Halau i Ka Pono! I love it!
