I am so glad to see this come into the area. This building has been empty since I moved into the area August of 2011, and based on the grass growing through the cracks in the parking lot, and vandalism to the building, I am assuming that it was empty far longer than that, probably since Katrina. I do appreciate fresh air coming in to the area, and I do believe that they will pump life into the building/ The Buttermilk Drop has several locations throughout the greater New Orleans area, and I have to say, it has its pros and cons. There is plenty of parking around the restaurant. Walking in the front door, everything is new and clean. There are two long bar type tables that have spots to plug in electronics. The staff is VERY friendly. The restaurant is neat and clean. There is plenty of seating if you want to sit and eat your food there, although I get the feeling that most everyone gets their food to go. I came on this last Sunday, and there was a line to get baked goods to take to church. There is a bar that holds the hot breakfast items. A large case to hold the baked goods. I was not impressed with the breakfast I got of the hash, grits, eggs and a warm biscuit(though the biscuit and grits were good). The hot chocolate was wonderful. The cinnamon roll, I took home, heated it in the microwave for 10 seconds and it was gooey delicious. The doughnuts are also excellent. I would only give this type of place 3 stars normally, but because of the fact that it is refreshing to see them, and the excellent customer service, I will give four. And I will be back for baked goods!

We got there about 10 minutes before closing, Sunday evening. Given the time of day, the selection was rather limited. Since the bakery is called«Buttermilk Drop,» almost all of New Orleans is going to compare their version of the confection to that of McKenzie’s. Unfortunately the only ones that were available were the red velvet. I ordered a few of those, some glazed, a cinnamon roll and a cinnamon square. Their buttermilk drops were smaller than most will be used to, but still good. It would only be fair in an apples-to-apples comparison between the traditional flavor, however these were moist and tasty. And that’s from a person not head-over-heels in love with red velvet. For the regular glazed, they’re definitely worth a visit if you’re nearby and want to support local business. Again, these were all fresh-tasting even though they were wrapping up for the evening. I also enjoyed my sample of the cinnamon swirl/roll, but the raisin square was a different spin. It bites and chews like denser, regular donut, but with cinnamon and raisins, all in the shape of a pillowy square. I would like to have had more raisins in the one I purchased, but I’m more than willing to give Buttermilk Drop another shot. Don’t you dare get grocery store donuts if you’re within 3 miles of this place.
