I was very disappointed with my experience here. When I arrived I was told there was a 40 minute wait. I asked the host if there was anything gluten free, such as gluten free bread or muffins. He went inside to ask and came back telling me there were indeed such items. After waiting the 40 minutes and being seated, I did not see anything gluten free on the menu. I asked the server and she said there was ONE gluten free item on the entire menu. It was some sort of egg dish. There was no gluten free bread to be found anywhere. I was not impressed with the quality of food. I will not be returning here.

I work a few blocks away and was very excited when La Playa opened. I“m a sucker for fresh juice. Everything has been okay– nothing amazing. This morning I got the large apple and carrot juice and added ginger — cost came to i think $ 7.79. She freshly juiced the tiny piece of ginger but then poured the apple and the carrot juice from pitchers that had been kept in the fridge. It was right after opening so I’m hoping the apples and carrots had been juiced prior to opening; however, for the cost, I want the guaranteed health benefits of FRESH juice. For all I know the pitchers could be a few days old. I won’t go back.

This place is an odd one. I really want to like it, but I’ve only had so-so food there and OK juice. Well, sometimes the juice was a bit better than OK, but not as good as Surrey serves at his flagship restaurant. Also, its Cash Only.

I’ve been to La Playa several times and love getting my Carrot, apple and pear juice. Staff is friendly and are great to help you decide what to get. A little on the pricey side, and they only take cash so go prepared. It’s great to run in and get some juice on your way out the door or to sit and have a plated meal.

It felt like I was having breakfast in a neighbor’s kitchen. My friend and I tumbled in here with a baby in tow and instantly the counterperson was our best friend, talking about kids, serving up refills of delicious cold brew iced coffee, swapping recipes. The booths are huge and comfortable, the bagels are just as good as over at Surrey’s(my favorite all time breakfast place), and it is nice to be so close to downtown without having to deal with a crowd or insane parking issues: in separate vehicles, we both found spots right out front on Clio during the crazy morning commute time. A block off the St. Charles streetcar line, this would be a good before-the-Garden-District-walking-tour stop for tourists if you have the all-day $ 5 streetcar pass. Especially if you are sick of beignets and need a shot of wheatgrass or some fresh squeezed OJ after a night of partying.

I would like to begin by giving La Playa props for being the first to open for business in a transitional area. To me, the location makes sense because it is en route to the CDB so people can stop on their way in to work. Rent must be very reasonable. La Playa is a small juceria(opened by the Surrey’s) in which you can get all sorts of exotic juices, bagels, cakes, etc… Today i bought a sesame bagel with pineapple cream cheese. The taste was great while the value was far from great. $ 4.09 for a bagel is too rich for my blood. I also was surprised at the lack of muffins… there really were none. With this location, i think they need to cater more towards the«to go» breakfast scene… If i do go back, it will be for a sit down breakfast to see if i can find a better value.
