The enchiladas and ceviche were soooo good! The ceviche should definitely come with chips or a tostada… they’re currently sold separately. In my quest to find Mexican food similar to what I’d find at home… this is probably the best! The price point is a bit higher than a typical mom and pop Mexican restaurant but it is definitely just as delicious!

Although I’ve only been there once I have to say I really enjoyed it! Our server was very very sweet and personable. She took really good care of us. The coffee was delicious! Just like I like it!(Tasted like a medium roast) Our platters were filling and very tasteful. I savored every bite. Yummy! The place was very clean with a bright ambiance!(I don’t like dark restaurants, especially for breakfast) I just wish they would open earlier since it is a pretty neat breakfast spot.

I really liked this place. Fellow Unilocal-er and I wanted to do a dinner together, and she chose this place because it was newish to the area and I agreed. We got there just after 6 pm, and a timeline is fairly important to my final conclusion, so bear with me here. The restaurant has only about a dozen or so tables with neat plastic tablecloths for easy cleaning, and parchment paper over that. We were given water to start with and I ordered a watermelon fresca. Oh my goodness, this is summer in a glass. They do not have their liquor license yet, but I did see that other customers brought in wine and they were able to partake there. My friend and I got talking after the specials for the night were read. I ordered the chicken tacos. I will let her review what she ordered. The shells tasted really fresh as if they were made in house or locally. The chicken was juicy and I did not need to add anything else. We were sitting and chatting for the longest time, even after our bills were paid, so I decided to order dessert for us to share. Rum cake using the owners grandmothers recipe? Yes please! And two forks. Not only was the presentation beautiful but the taste! Oh! My! I think that I am in love. Can I just marry this cake please? Any how, when the waitress brought the second check for dessert, I asked what was in the boats the other customers got, well evidently instead of chips an salsa before the meal, they pass out this yummy popcorn that is just a hint of spicy, they were just not ready yet when we came in. Only a couple of tables were occupied when we came in, but at peak it was ¾ of the way full, one waitress keeping on top of everything. She was amazing. Really. She described everything perfectly. Any way, time slipped on buy for my friend and I and we left at about 8:40 or so. Looking at Unilocal,I discovered they had closed at 8 according to their page. And there were still customers dining when we left! Amazing, and the waitress showed no sign of slowing and did not ever mention they were closing soon. All in all, I still paid under $ 20, so I feel as if it was reasonably priced. The only downside is the parking, it is limited at this location. I do look forward to coming back!

El Pavo Real(The Peacock) has a simple exterior and interior, but everything is neat a clean. The wait staff are friendly hipsters(tattoos, dyed hair, tight shirts, skinny pants), and the prices are fair. I ordered the Chicken Enchiladas plate($ 12.00), and it came with a small, green salad, sour cream, and a bowl of black beans. I had this with some delicious, house-made habenero sauce. The enchiladas were medium sized, with dark meat chicken, a good, creamy red sauce, and an enormous amount of gooey, stringy, melted cheese. I loved it and would return. RJT

The best chilaquiles I’ve had in the United States. It reminds me of home! Wonderful food, incredibly fresh, high quality, ingredients. For the quality and quantity of food you get the prices are very reasonable. This is my home away from home, and my definition of comfort food!

Well now it has finally happened and NOLA has achieved being more expensive than New York, Los Angeles and Austin so hipsters rejoice. The Caldo de Pollo at El Pavo Real is the most expensive I’ve ever had anywhere at $ 14.25 so with tax and tip it was a $ 20.83 lunch so I would’ve done better going to Commander’s Palace. This is also the laziest version of this soup I’ve ever had as the chicken came on the bones and it ended up being the least amount of meat I’ve ever had in any version of this dish as all I got was two chicken wings, one drumstick and small cut of thigh. Usually you hope to eat your soup without having to dig your hands in but this one definitely requires the hands and fingers to get immersed and your shirt will get splattered so plan on a messy eating experience with this. In Austin I used to eat Caldo de Pollo in an upscale restaurant for $ 8 and that included my iced tea and buttery biscuits drizzled in honey. At nearby Taqueria Guerrero this dish is $ 9.99 and comes with much more stuff in it. I could get a Vietnamese Phở Ga with way more food in the soup for $ 6 or $ 7. So under a $ 1 in meat and maybe another $ 1 in vegetables makes quite a killer profit margin for this dish but it kills my desire to return as this Caldo was among the least desirable I’ve ever encountered and the price is outrageous for other than hipsters(OTH).

This hidden gem is an oasis of amazing Mexican food. The full menu is served all day. The enchiladas are amazing, as is the Chilaquilles, and the taco’s. Everything is homemade with fresh, high quality, ingredients. I highly recommend this neighborhood restaurant to anyone looking for an authentic and delicious meal in New Orleans!

This kind of looks like a hole in the wall type of place and the inside doesn’t look too promising, but the food and the service we received made it well worth it. We were looking for a good brunch place, my boyfriend and I, and we stumbled upon this place on Unilocal.I’m so glad we did, because it exactly satisfied our cravings for some great Mexican food. I definitely want to return to try out the dinner menu!

Authentic Mexican food in a cute, cozy neighborhood setting. We came here for Valentine’s Day weekend and loved everything we ordered. The chiles rellenos verduras are vegan if you skip the cheese, and the poblano peanut sauce served with the dish makes the whole dish super tasty. The black beans are perfect. Same for the guacamole(a little spicy, but just the right consistency and plenty of it for the whole table to share). The chips were fresh, thick and crunchy and tasted homemade. Both salsas are spicy and full of flavor. My wife had the pescado vera cruz for an entrée, which they prepare with fresh drum(her favorite). The little guy had a chicken and cheese quesadilla which was a little overdone on the outside but he devoured the whole thing in record time and said it was delicious. Service was on point. Friendly, attentive, and helpful. All three of us got out of there with two entrees, two apps, a quesadilla and limeade for $ 60. I hope this place makes it — it’s great for the neighborhood and we’ll definitely be back. jeremy

More of a 3.5 stars really but I round up. El Pavo Real is a sweet little spot in an otherwise underserved Broadmoor area. I stopped by for a lunch around New Years with the S.O. It is a pretty sparse space with basic furnishings that belie the more upscale aspirations of the kitchen. I was a little surprised to see prices going over $ 15 for relatively simple dishes, like carnitas. With 2 steak tacos hitting $ 9 — it certainly seemed a little steep. Even with one of the more modest dishes — cheese enchiladas — we were informed a side might be necessary to round out the meal — so tack on another $ 5 for beans. So even though I was still a hit by the initial sticker shock I was pleased to say that the food was very good. The carnitas I settled on was definitely a cleaner, more elegant version that I am used to and worth a few extra bucks. I plowed through it quickly. The enchiladas had mixed reviews from the SO, but I thought they were fine and enjoyed the addition of poblano chiles. Even the $ 5 side of beans got a thumbs up — because they were great, with wonderful flavor. The service accompanying the meal was pleasant but food did take a while coming out of the kitchen. Ultimately I still felt the prices to be a little high for lunch — I enjoyed it and would return and not think twice about paying them at dinner time — maybe a lunch special is in order.

So excited to have an AUTHENTIC Mexican restaurant in the city. Walking into El Pavo Real felt like being in el D.F. or Oaxaca City. Staff was attentive and friendly and the food came quickly. We tried the salsa and guacamole which were both DELICIOUS. I do agree with one of the other Unilocalers which said that more chips were needed. The chicken and mole tamale was outstanding and the extra mole was nice but another tamale on the plate would’ve been nicer ;-) We closed out our tasting with all three tacos. The one that really stood out for us was the fish. Crispy and fresh with a wonderful salsa and pickled onions. The beef and chicken were also good and the portions were on point. We will definitely be back to try the Platos.

3⁄5 worth another try. put effort into the door. it’s a little tricky(heavy?) to get through. alright you are in. adjust your ears. it echoes terribly in here. okay, have a seat. great. plastic-y table cloths, cute. the food is decent, but feels so pricy! i mean, $ 4 for just one tamale(chicken + mole, i think?). oh man. it was good, but all the bites didn’t quite add up in value. the platanos as a side were also kinda sparing… it’s cut up into many bites, but maybe there were just 2 plantains in total on the plate, both on the skinny side(i’m used to the thick, flat ones from turon in my childhood). i think that was also in mole… they use a lot of mole. my friend ordered the mole and she thought it was good. i got the enchiladas, which were filling and hearty, but with no sides was steep at over $ 10. conversation was difficult — there weren’t really even any tables occupied around us, but it just echoed in there — i think at one point we were just reading each other’s faces. i don’t know if how they are planning to expand hours(i think these days they run til 8pm), but friends who live in the neighborhood say they’re excited to have a food option. i’m hoping they are warming up and will settle into a groove that hopefully will meet the price point.

Amazing. The guacamole is made to order & is the best I’ve ever had in a restaurant, maybe the best I’ve had period with the perfect balance of jalapeño & lime. We got a lamb stew special and it was perfect for the rainy day, beautifully spiced. Fish tacos, ceviche, and chicken mole were all delicious. They make their tortillas in house and serve breakfast all day. Bring a bottle of cava and it’s the perfect Mexican brunch spot.(Plus they show Saints games so you don’t have to miss ‘em). Service was great-fast & attentive, and the chef/owners are Super lovely. We’ll be back to try the rest of the menu!

I was actually pleasantly surprised after eating here. I was a little wary looking at the menu since I’m so picky. I got chicken enchiladas and the pintos; my husband ordered the mole poblano. My husband said the mole sauce is very good. The enchiladas had too much cheese, but were otherwise good in flavor. The chicken wasn’t dry, which is a huge plus. The beans were AMAZING. The flavor and texture was outstanding. I would definitely come to order just the beans. They provided plenty of salsa(a tomatillo salsa and pico de gallo), but not many chips. I would highly recommend increasing the serving of the chips!(PS — the chips were really delicious, made-from-scratch tortillas that were fried). The actual tortillas were a little on the dry side(before being deep fried into chips). I think the prices are high for what they have, and the service was alright. I would say it took about 20 minutes for the food to come out, though.

Well, I went into El Pavo with the highest of hopes. Being a Broadmoor by, it is blocks from mi casa. Now, when I park, they are adjacent to a church and I was not sure if the parking is for them or the church. When I am seated, I ask the waitress if the parking is for them or the church, and sje states for them, to which I add a little joke of «It would be pretty embarrassing to be towed by a church». Her response«Sounds like a personal problem to me.» Yeah, great way to start an encounter. Looking at their menu, a little price for the neighborhood, most items ala carte. I ask if the Chilequilles which come with eggs(Technically making them Migas, but who am I to dicker over names) can come with meat instead of eggs as I was not wanting eggs, but more inclined to something a little more lunchey. Ashe asked and was told yes, they could do that. I ordered the Chilequilles, and an app of Chips and Salsa, also a little step at 4 dollars. My chips and salsa arrive and was a very small portion of chips with 2 small ramekins of salsa, one of Verde and one of Pico. Both were pretty average in taste and presentation. My meal arrives, and although the Chiliquelles is in a beautiful Verde sauce, the chicken is in a much more robust Roja Sauce, which only serves to overpower the delicate nature of the Verde. While talking to the chef later, it was determined that they have a few chicken options they could have chosen from and chose the Roja option, although I will never know why. The portion was decent, not big not small, but a little less than average. I am uncertain if I will be going back there again. The portions are small, and the ala carte dishes, too expensive. Enchilladas are $ 12.00 Rice is $ 3.50 Beans are $ 4.95 Pre-Tax, this simple Mexican dish will set you back $ 20.45. waaay too much for Enchilladas. Although the Verde is beautiful, it is not enough to salvage the experience. I am certain tat the Server, must be the manager, as she is far too cocky and sarcastic to be a simple hourly employee. And if she is, she really needs to seek out an other line of work. For better money, trek down to Canal and Carrolton to Taquería Guerrero. Better prices, friendly staff and although not nearly as quaint, better food overall. If you live in the 70125, try this place, but be aware of the flaws. The cons, defiantly outweigh the pros.

Going to a restaurant only days after they open is always a questionable choice but boy am I glad we did! El Pavo Real opened on South Broad across from the Rosa Keller Library last week and they are making waves in Broadmoor! We found the service friendly and the speed just fine. They brought spicy popcorn with our drinks and shortly after the tamales we ordered to start. The tamales were dark and perfect. I’m not a mole fan but it was served on the side and my wife said it was lovely. She ordered the chicken enchiladas as her entrée and found them lovely. Cheesy in a red sauce and very flavorful. My carnitas plate was the highlight of my day. Melt-in-your-mouth tender. Absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. At a very affordable price Broadmoor will be keeping this new gem hopping!
