Recommendation by a heavy set N’awlins native Über driver, check. Slightly questionable looking neighborhood complete with cat calls for my lady friend from some of NOLA’s finest gentlemen, check. Convenience store front long overdue for a upgrade, check. All the hallmark signs of a hidden food gem, double check. Broad and Banks offers excellent down home Cajun food along with a mix of Chinese and Italian fare. Even better is that its cheap enough that you can easily afford a taste of their large variety. My girlfriend and I have made Broad and Banks a Monday tradition on our yearly trip to the Big Easy. We share two small vats one containing red beans the other gumbo. Both of which are out of this world. The gumbo is filled with delicious ingredients that seemingly includes everything but the kitchen sink. In addition I order the oysters and catfish platter. It is always fried just right and full of flavor. If you’re looking for a low key but delicious meal with a great price to match, then step away from the MacDonald’s counter and check this out.

Gumbo and meat pies are A+. A small Gumbo(which was so filling I couldn’t even finish) and their meat pie only ran me $ 7.02 with tax. The food has a kick to it so be warned but it’s hella tasty.

This is a local lunch counter that does take out orders only. For under $ 20, a family of four can eat and be full until morning. We love the Gumbo, it is loaded with shrimp, patton’s sausage(a New Orleans staple), boneless chicken and smoked sausage. If you like a very thick gumbo this is not for you. However, if you like a thinner very flavorful gumbo this a great option. Boiled crabs, Ribeye steaks, fried chicken, red & white beans n rice, stuffed bell peppers, etc. They have all of the dishes LA is known for. From Soul Food(Boiled turkey necks, pig feet, corn, potatoes), Cajun food(Gumbo), and Chinese food(Lomein/fried rice) it is all there. Did I mention they have ooey gooey cake, a soul food favorite(it’s a cross between yellow fudge and yellow butter cake). There is also a very good Shrimp with Penne Pasta. This spot also makes delicious poboys and sandwiches. Please know this is not a touristy place, it is authentic and where the local folks go for a hearty bite. If you’re a tourist take a cab to this location and go eat up the street in Armstrong Park or bring it back to your hotel to eat on the balcony as you soak up all the sites and sounds of this beautiful city. Don’t waste your time or your $ in the quarter thinking you’ll find authentic New Orleans, this is the real deal.

I was craving for shrimp po-boy the moment I drove in NOLA and this was the closest to me at the time, but I was a bit surprised how sketchy this was. Broad & Banks Seafood is essentially a corner deli store with lots of alcohols that many locals apparently frequents, and it is for a good reason. Even though I would not recommend this for people who are picky about cleanliness, I think this is a great place to get a nice seafood poboy and other Cajun food without breaking bank! My order was a 12-inch shrimp poboy for $ 7.95. Inside was filled with fried, corn-breaded shrimps, and I actually needed a break to finish the hearty sandwich even though I was starving for hours beforehand! The fresh medium-sized shrimps were definitely what made this sandwich so good, and I was craving more by the end of the night. Like I said, there may be better poboys or cleaner shops, but for a 12-in poboy filled with shrimps for only $ 7.95…it’s a pretty damn good deal!

The gumbo here is amazing. I had it the other day and was really impressed by it. There was plenty of seafood and sausage. It had a lot of flavor and is the best gumbo i’ve had in New Orleans thus far.

Love Love Love their gumbo. It’s so addicting !! All their food is good. I work down the street from them and at least eat there once a week. I also like their boil corn and potatoes. I don’t even like boil potatoes but I’m in love with their. It’s the only place I would eat the potatoes because they are so flavorful. Other places are so bland!

Awesome shrimp poboys! I have one every time I’m in the city. Always made with fresh ingredients. The best in New Orleans! The waiting is not long and friendly customer service.

I visited this spot based upon several friends raving about the gumbo. I was underwhelmed. While the gumbo contained generous portions of meat and shrimp it tasted bland, like something was missing. I also tried the eggrolls and they were ok.

FAVORITEDELICOUNTEROF2014 This was a true find… literally I followed a stream of construction workers through its doors. Since that day I have stopped here on almost every long run I take through this sketchy neighborhood(and that’s during the daytime) for pasta, gumbo, kebabs, etc. The cashier sits behind bullet proof glass, yet Audi’s and Mini Coopers idle out front. Worth a look. Other 2014 Favorites: Melba’s, NOLA Smokehouse, Dmac’s, Los Poblanos Foodtruck, New Orleans Coffee & Beignets, De Ville Crêperie.

When you ‘re stuck eating out every night at expensive touristy restaurants that are close by to your hotel, this place was a breath of fresh air. A local directed us to this place way off the beaten path but it was cheap and absolutely delicious. So much to choose from we ordered one of almost everything we saw. And every last thing was good the shrimp the pasta the rice the Po’ boys. $ 2 for a whole stuffed soft shell crab!!! Sketchy area but there were plenty of cops around to make you feel safe if you’re not from here. Outside looks like a mini mart but don’t let that fool you even though you can’t dine in. And it definitely beats McDonald’s if you going broke. Everything tastes home cooked if you missing that kind of meal. And it was just a quick trolley ride down Canal and a few blocks away from the main streets. Would definitely recommend and come here again.

So many things to choose from. I ended up just having shrimp fried rice and an egg roll since I caught them near closing time. Clean place. Shrimp were clean, which I’m crazy OCD about. I’ll definitely be going back again soon for a Po Boy, among other things.

The food here is delicious and the people are warm-hearted, kind, and generous. I came here on a whim with a friend on Friday got the kabob(10⁄10) and the beans and rice(10⁄10) as well as a piece of the fried chicken(10⁄10). Needless to say, I went back on Saturday and ate more. Everything on the menu is delicious and the prices are low. Go there!

I go for in for the egg rolls and gumbo at least once a week. Its a staple. Both are damn good. They’re super friendly and prices are great. Haven’t explored much of the menu but everything at the hot bar is good. They’re closed on Sundays which is a total bummer.

Pretty awesome food. There are other gas stations with similar poboys that are cheaper, but for food, this place is better than all the gas stations on broad. They serve the typical 8in, 16in, and 32in poboy from shrimp, catfish, to oysters and hot sausage. My culinary friend really enjoyed their gumbo — per rec from some of the customers. It’s basically a fusion of Chinese and Cajun-soul food cooked by Vietnamese management. Definitely a good combination so if you are looking for inexpensive food that tastes great, swing by and you won’t be disappointed.

I am from New Orleans and this place has the BEST gumbo in the city! Every time my friends come from out of town they want to go straight here for gumbo. Everything else is great too. If you want great food at a great place this is the place to go.

The staff is really nice. I live and work right down the street, so this place is very convenient for me. However, the food is mediocre and way way way too salty. I’ve had several items there and most were just passable, as in they will make a turd and that’s about it. The lasagna I had today was by far the most disgusting thing I’ve put in my mouth since I accidentally spread some of Aunt Betty’s cat food pâté on a cracker at Christmas. They made it with American cheese, and a few noodles and mostly a large heaping helping of salted hamburger. I was starving so I did my best to eat around the most disgusting parts(really? What level of hunger desperation had I reached today?) I gave the homeless guy outside $ 2 just to go across the street and save himself.

Well what can I say about my gumbo experience at this establishment. I was staying at the Hilton River Walk Nola. I asked the concierge desk were csn i get a good gumbo and I was referred to this establishment and it did not disappoint. The gumbo was so delicious, you can see the sausage, the chicken and plump shrimp. The roux gravy was very tasty. I would recommend this place for outstanding gumbo.

The cult following of this place is ridiculous. This is your typical Asian influenced New Orleans corner store. With marginally fresher ingredients. Most of what I’ve ever had is way too salty. The only time I ever come here is if I’m hankering for a fix of calorie laden sweet and sour pork with it’s oddly buttery shrimp fried rice. They also of a sizable amount of «new orleans» staples, seafood pasta, shrimp, stuffed crab, red beans and rice, po-boys etc. But to be honest with you, the average working class New Orleans resident is probably addicted to salt first and foremost. It’s not that the recipes suck, it’s someone just got used to dumping too much salt and not enough anything else along the way. You will find plenty of it here. Places like this to me are ruining food culture for a lot of Americans. Taking away flavor and fresh delicious ingredients, and replacing it with quantity and addiction to carbs, salts, and sugars.

The food here isn’t spectacular but it’s definitely mangeable, and the prices are ridiculously low. We got a large(huge) thing of gumbo, a combo plate of red beans and rice with 2 pork chops, and 6 hard shell crabs, and it came to $ 23. The gumbo is really thick with chicken, shrimp and sausage. The ladies that work there are nice and friendly and don’t mind if you ask dumb questions. As noted in the other review, it’s not the greatest intersection but there are a few parking spots on the Banks side, so I wouldn’t say you’re in any danger if you pop in and out of there.

Okay let me start off by saying, its definitely not a place you want to stick around to long. Although its worth being asked by alcoholics for a dollar to go get some of the food. It’s basically just a regular store, but they serve food in the back. Everyone goes here for some gumbo, its absolutely great. One of my favorite items is the shrimp past and club poboy. You have to try it out. It’s beyond cheap!
