I usually go to the other fruit market here but for some things they can’t be beat. Even better than a lot of the latino bodegas and markets on Ave C and D.

Located close to the middle of the Essex Street Market, Viva is the middle ground between Essex Farm (upscale) and Batista (standard Latino greengrocer). Staff is friendly, selection is good (mix of Latino and slightly more upscale grocery items) and prices are on the low side. They’ll hit you with a curve ball every now and then, like deals on mesclun greens or tarragon. Well worth poking around on a stroll through the market. Most of their business seems to be conducted in Spanish, but they’ll seamlessly shift gears into cheerful English as needed. Nice place, nice people and a few good deals. Worth checking out.
