The market market is located inside the larger Essex Market. It’s fantastic for all types of meat cuts at great prices, at least by NYC standards. I got 2 slices of NY Strip Steak, and they look really fresh, has great marbling, and is a perfect size. You just walk up to the counter, tell them how much meat you want in approximate weight(or just say how think you want the slices), and they chop it up and you’re on your way. Definitely a better place than most grocery stores. Not sure if Trader Joe’s sells fresh meat… maybe they’d be comparable. They do take credit cards(AMEX as well), not just debit cards.

I will admit, I rarely visited Luis Meat Market when Jeffrey was in business. I don’t know why, it was just a loyalty thing, I guess. But now that Jeffrey is gone, I have come to know the crew at Luis and find them to be equally as charming, knowledgeable, helpful, and far less creepy with women. With more or less the same prices, I suspect that Luis will be bringing in some of the more high end cuts that Jeffrey used to carry that they do not. I was a little surprised this weekend, though, when they told me they throw out the stew bones because no one ever asks for them. Seriously? Really? ok, I want them for free from now on. So they may not have the charisma of Jeffrey, teach sausage stuffing classes(which I think was just an excuse for Jeffrey to flirt with women), or have the selection of aged prime rib but these guys are good butchers none the less. The more of us that frequent them, I suspect they will be upping their selection and catering to a wider range of customers. So go to Luis Meat Market at the Essex Market and show your love. Oh, and tell them to save me the bones.
