This place is like a strange family member that the Meatball Shop keeps locked in a basement. Darkness, drinks, long tables as if Game of Thrones was about bunch of wealthy kids in SoHo, and a general feeling of safety: like a bar inside your mom’s basement. I like the food, standard 4⁄5 Meatball shop fare. Harried but good natured and chill bartenders, low ceilings, echoes. I wouldn’t really come running here on voyage for a night out but I must admit this is one excellent place to reserve and hold a party in. Everyone down here at the event I went to was visibly happily. I also just want to quickly add that Meatball Shops in general, and Underballs as well, have some of the best ice cream sandwiches in all of NYC. I guess the takeaway here is that sometimes it is fun to party in your mom’s basement.

I loved Underballs. After hearing about the opening of Meatball Shop Chelsea(I know quite awhile ago), I have been dying to try their subterranean, cleverly named bar. There was $ 6 wine — not on happy hour — just all the time. Amazing meatballs. I LOVE the classic and the buffalo chicken. Personally, I don’t like to distract from the balls, so I always get them naked. Great and friendly service. All at a wallet friendly price. Underballs is… well… amaze-balls.(I had to do do it.)

We came in here with a large group — about 8 of us – for drinks an hour before they were supposed to close. We walked in and it was empty, so before we sat down, we asked if they were still open. The bartender said they were, and so we sat down. From that point forward, the guys working there made it crystal clear to us that we were not welcome, and that we obviously interfered with their intended early closing that night. Nothing but attitude and eye rolling as we ordered drinks — to the point that everyone at the table was silent and asking«should we just leave?». Needless to say, we ordered one round of drinks and left to go to another bar. Listen, I get it, you planned on going home early and then we show up. But you know what, you should have just said you were closed. Don’t welcome people in and then make them feel guilty for being there. That’s just messed up.

This place was great. Small bar with great cocktails, good music(not too loud that you can’t talk), and reasonably priced. Bartenders were really nice and skilled.

I was surprised to see UnderBalls was not yet on Unilocal. It’s the subterranean bar beneath The Meatball Shop in Chelsea that serves up fun libations and yet still serves the full menu from the restaurant upstairs. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the neighborhood, but not totally worth making it a destination of your evening. Good drinks, and service on par. To get there, just go into The Meatball Shop and walk to the back-left of the dining room and follow the signs that says«Under Balls.»

Drinks are not expensive, quite and relaxed place. You can order some food from upstairs, the all amazing Meatball shop! This place is called under balls which I think it’s hilarious but befitting considering you have to enter the Meatball Shop restaurant to get into it. It’s a small bar with seating for about 4 – 5 and probably 3 two person tables. Not a place to come and be loud and expect the newest hits to be playing. come on down(literally) and enjoy a drink and even order meatballs from upstairs :) This is not a first date recommended place, maybe a third, but only if you are upstairs and don’t want to travel far for a drink where it won’t be crowded, chances are, you’ll probably be there alone, not a bad thing in my books! :)
