Celebrated a(very) belated Valentine’s Day here with my boyfriend for dinner. We did the 7 course tasting menu and it was tasty and beautiful. We opted for cocktails– which were delicious. Service was excellent, great ambiance, modern and stylish décor. All around great experience and while it is pricey, the quality of the food and service does not disappoint.

My first two michelin star restaurant ever, and I can say that food didn’t taste the same for a week after this experience. Upfront: I’m only giving this 4 stars because really it’s just not affordable for the average person. My friend is in the business, so we got a discount, but even with that I’d say this is for a special occasion. I wish this quality of food was more accessible! We did the 7 course tasting menu. I got the pescatarian option and the rest of the table got the normal one(if you don’t like duck, tell them!). Everything was delightful. If you’re a truffles lover, then this is your place to go. The bites are appropriately sized. The presentation, texture, and taste were awesome. If you make enough $ to treat yourself every now and then, try it out!

Birthday dinner! I settled on this place as I could not get a reservation for Eleven Madision Park(damn you, Valentine’s day). This place just received it’s 2nd Michelin star so I wanted to try this place out anyway(next on the bucket list). Décor is very… Modern. The dining room is right next to the bar room, and overlooked a garden that was part of the Museum of Modern Art. Ordered the pre-fixe(4 dishes) and shared so we had 8 – 10 dishes in total. Appetizers: Hamachi Cured in Juniper(charred onions and buttermilk) Pistachio Marinated Blue Shrimp(apple and radish) Sea: Roasted Lobster Potage(garlic and potatoes) Black Bass & Salsify(wild sorrel and lettuce) Meats: Blanquette of Porcelet De Lait(kohlrabi and shallots) Glazed Veal Cheeks(artichokes barigoule and black truffles) Dessert: Almond Blancmange(black currants and pear-olive oil sorbet) Green Apple Mousse(crème fraîche and tarragon ice cream) Freebies: Mini chicken dumpling soup, honey mustard pretzel croissant and right before dessert, a coconut sorbet wrapped in a mango wrapper Plates were nice and fancy. Surprisingly, the glazed veal cheeks looked the least appetizing(everything on the plate was dark)… but it was the best tasting dish of the nice I think. Tender and really good. Next I would say the black bass was good. Desserts were ok, with the green apple mousse being much more lighter. The free coconut sorbet/mango wrap was actually the best part of the dessert. Overall the food I would give a 7.5−8÷10. Not too shabby. The service was good. They really tried. It felt at times they were really«trying» to live up to the 2 michelin stars and it showed sometimes… felt a little like we were getting stalked sometimes but nothing to call the cops about. There was an error when we ordered our drinks though. We ordered 2 cocktails, the Vodka and white rum. They gave us the Vodka but an aged rum instead(really strong). The waiter realized his error and comped the rum and gave us the white rum right away… but seriously, you had one job. Overall a good experience. Service was really friendly but the food did not make me go crazy. I’m more in the line of a 4.3÷5… but that rounds down to a 4. Still a good experience overall, my expectations may have been a bit high. I still had great company and this place is still worth trying out. Next time I would probably just go to the bar room though.

I decided to turn a business trip into a one– and two-Michelin star tour of Manhattan, featuring The Modern’s Bar Room this past Sunday evening. This entailed comparing menus and reviews of restaurants across the island to curate a list of top picks to share with friends and colleagues. I’m looking forward to following Abram Bissell and other chefs on my list in future visits to New York and other cities. To begin, The Modern is part of the Museum of Modern Art, with a separate entrance just to the right of the museum proper. Even upon just entering the long entrance hallway, you notice that everything is – well, modern! Without trying too hard or looking like a misplaced art exhibit, the restaurant itself is an expression of the works that reside in its neighboring building. I had made a reservation about a week in advance, and our party was seated right away upon arrival. I understand that reservations aren’t required, but if you’re thinking about coming here, do yourself a favor and snag a seating on OpenTable. As one would expect, the coat check was seamless. We found ourselves toward the back-center of a well-appointed dining space that sported warm wood floors and tables against a backdrop of a rich, dark bar. The first thing to note about the menu itself is that it does not use headers; rather, the name of each dish is on the left side of the menu, and its constituent parts are listed on the right. This change, while small, speaks to how Chef Bissell takes design and experience seriously. The menu is then divided into light starters, appetizers, sea dishes, and land dishes. I particularly liked the division of the seafood items, as it made the challenging decision of which dishes to order a bit easier since I have a seafood allergy. We chose among the list of 8 craft cocktails, and I opted for the Rapscallion, a blanco tequila(Casa Dragones) libation with almond, citrus, and orange bitters. I was immediately intrigued by its simplicity. Some establishments with two bright ones have profoundly complex combinations of ingredients and while I often enjoy processing the different waves and layers of flavor, it was honestly refreshing to have a drink whose four ingredients worked as well together as long-time colleagues. The Butter Lettuce Salad was a nice palate prep dish that offered a surprising combination of somewhat melted Parmesan with kale. I can’t say the salad was unforgettable, but the use of butter lettuce added a gentle reminder that, «Oh yes, it IS wintertime.» The highlight of my meal was the duck confit ravioli, which was simply divine. You know when you have duck that is dry and sinewy? None of that in the Bar Room. Not only was the use of duck in ravioli a refreshing preparation(though I saw it at another restaurant this week), but it was cooked perfectly. I don’t often give thought to Swiss chard, but it was a perfect complement to the ravioli – again, a prime example of uncomplicated but thoughtful creations. The duck broth was smooth and much less fatty than what you’d find at a typical establishment. My friends ordered a combination of the black truffle cavatelli, Brioche fried chicken, and slow-baked sea bass, all of which they found to be utterly delightful. Having worked hard to carve out space for dessert, I was pleased to order the apple tarte tatin, an upsided-down pastry topped with ice cream and a warm apple compote(with just enough apple crumbles to be decorative and tasty without being messy). The ice cream itself was somewhat standard, but it sang when combined with the cake. I think another Unilocaler described the service well. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The hostess was even visible and helpful, although I did not expect to see her walking around the dining room itself. In a move that is becoming increasingly popular among fine resteauranteurs, Danny Meyer eliminated tipping last year, so you’ll see that«hospitality is included» on the menu. Regardless of your feelings toward the entire practice of tipping, its elimination indeed rings true to the name of the restaurant and simplifies the dining experience. I was thoroughly pleased with The Modern and look forward to returning and dining in the larger dining room.

This is the informal area of the dining at The Modern. We decided to have lunch before going in to the museum. You can make reservations but we did not and lucked out! Tip is now included — that’s nice and simple! No need to calculate. There is still tax though. Food is high quality including the mini warm baguettes they serve with salted butter. The steak en CRONUTS with truffles not only looks beautiful but tastes good. My lobster sausage with some shrimp encase like a sausage is served on top of spaghetti squash(it’s a type of squash that has a flesh like spaghetti noodles when heated or lightly scraped out of its shell. The server comes to pour the lobster bisque as its sauce. Light and well balanced as it includes vegetables. The scallops look good too. We ordered fried lobster which is served on salt, mayo-like at the bottom of the shell with the fried oyster on top and garnished with a thin tiny slice of pickled radish. It may sound pricey because the tip is already included. I wonder if they calculated it as 18−20%? Food is well worth it as it would be too much steps involved to make any of the things we ordered Impressive!

Came here On a Wednesday for lunch before catching a 2pm show. Beautiful décor floor to ceiling window looking outside. Staffs were all courteous and directed us to wait at the bar while we wait for other members of our party to arrive. Ordered a drink at the bar which were carried over to my table once we were able to to be seated. We opted for 4 course $ 120 vs 3 course($ 113) since it’s literally 7 dollar differences, our server suggested 3 in order for us to finish and leave by 1:30 but we went against it given the minimal price difference. Ordered a few glasses of wine and I believe our server Mis pronounced carignan but maybe it’s me. We had tart of foie gras(waiter recommended against hot apps which can take longer) which was excellent, staff recommended Riesling to go with it which we indulged. Also had Scallop, chicken, suckling pig. Overall a great experiences unfortunately we had to rush through the service to make the show. We ended up leaving at 1:50 and made it to theater a minute or two after 2. The wife enjoyed a particular wine we had which our server recommended, I was able to reach out to modern which then provided to me via email a copy of the itemized receipt so I know which wine we tried. Very accommodating and helpful.

1. Location: NEXTTO the MOMA, closer to 5th ave. 2. Layout: Restaurant is divided into 3 sections– from the entrance: a. bar 2. bar room 3. formal dining. Formal dining room with white tablecloths has mostly an older and more posh crowd– this is where you want to be if you want to celebrate a special occasion, and advance reservations are required. The Bar Room didn’t require reservations but its tough getting a table as a walk-in, especially on the weekend. For last minute planners– your best bet would be at the bar/open lounge tables that are first come, first serve and they offer the full a la carte menu too. 3. Timing: I would recommend avoiding the after museum crowd. Everyone wants to hop over for a drink around that time and the bar was totally packed(we arrived around 6p). I had the«Not your cup of tea» as I waited it out(delish) — the bartender was kind enough to give me heads up when someone was about to leave. Luckily, the wait wansn’t too bad– 15 mins in, a couple left and we settled right in. 4. Service: Excellent. Friendly and on point. Everyone was very down to earth– no pretentiousness! We were on a time constraint and had to leave in a hour to catch our show. We ordered quickly and they were quick to accomodate. 5. Food: Bread– didn’t seem warm on arrival, standard. The Hamachi & Black Truffle Tortellini-loved them both! The starkly contrasting flavors really brought out each dish. Entrees– roasted scallops with dill sauce & lobster sausage. The Lobster was a bit heavy for my liking but my date loved it! Our pairing with the lighter scallops was perfect– we’re both a big fan of their dill sauce. 6. Dessert: Winter Spiced Chocolate Beignets with Ginger Ice Cream– I think this was my favorite part of the meal! Beignets were soooo warm and chocolaty. mmmmm. 7. No Tipping policy– even at coat check! All in all, I’d love to be back but hopefully at a table next time with real chairs. The seating at the bar wasn’t too comfy and my date was trying to correct my slouching lol Location is perfectly within walking distance to Broadway too, if you’re looking for a pre-show meal :) PS– if you’re a fan of Downton Abbey, one of the guys behind the bar looks like Tom Branson! Since we’ve both been marathon watching DTA, we totally got a kick outta that!

The Modern lunch menu is dead(value wise). Long live The Modern dinner menu. Like many NYC restaurants The Modern dropped the tipping culture and offers an all inclusive price(well, minus the tax) on their menu. Unlike some places that cannot just let go of the tip line on the credit card receipt even after turning into a no tip restaurant The Modern truly lives up to their claim. They even refuse tips at coat check, which was pretty surprising. Anyway, with the restructuring of their menu prices and what not the large difference between lunch and dinner faded away. I claimed that their lunch was the best deal in town but now I think their dinner is the best deal. The seven course that The Modern offers in lieu of tasting menu is priced very competitively when compared to other tasting menus around town. While you pick your own choices for the three or four item course seven course is pre-set by the kitchen. They still offer items from the menu but some are slightly different or new. Desserts are pretty much menu items though. They were also nice enough to allow only me to order the seven course while my wife just opted for the three and timed all the dishes for us accordingly. Between the meal and wine we spent a very enjoyable few hours at The Modern as usual and I can’t wait until our next visit. I heard they recently got upgraded to Michelin 2 stars so they must be doing something right.

Recently had the honor to experience this 2 Michelin star establishment and it lived up to reputation. Immaculate décor and superb service. The waitstaff is extremely professional and yet warm and highly attentive but not overbearing. Whether you choose the 3 or 4 course for lunch or the 3,4(or even the 7!) courses dinner, you won’t go wrong. All plates are gorgeous, thoughtfully arranged and truly highlights the genius of Executive Chef Abram and Chef de Cuisine Tom. The fare is flavorful and beautifully displays perfect French cooking technique and American influence. My favorite dish from the visit was the slow roasted beef with a broccoli and Parmesan cassoulet. If you have room, definitely try the dessert! Very inventive and the serving is just enough to pleasantly round out your meal/experience. Extensive wine list and the sommelier is very informed and educates on the wine to help you decide.

*This review is Only for Drinks at the Bar* Just had drinks here and didn’t eat, so can’t speak for the food. But this is super-modern, super-cool and super-gorgeous place for drinks. The very long marble bar is pretty chic and they have a great selection of cocktails, wines and a surprisingly good selection of sherry and madera. The crowd is a mix of business, attorneys and public relation types and well-heeled older patrons, and given the prices, that makes sense. We had a glass of Chenin and a glass of Jacquere, which is really cool as it’s a Swiss wine, and I almost never see wine from Switzerland here in the U.S. It was excellent and well-balanced. This is a great place for business after-work drinks or drinks with friends or dates, but given the high prices, it’s much better if you can come on an expense account. The other cool thing about The Modern is that it’s one of the few«Non-Tipping Restaurants» in the city, so when the bill comes, the Tip is included, a la European-style. This is a trend that a few of the higher-end restaurants in NYC are starting to do, and I have to admit, it was pretty nice not having to deal with a tip, and yet the service was still excellent. Overall, I highly recommend this place for drinks(and dinner if you can), and it’s even better if you can expense it or have work pay for it.

First of all, if I could literally draw a picture of what my favorite restaurant would LOOK like, it would look EXACTLY like The Modern. I’ve never seen such sophisticated yet modern décor in my life. It’s truly exceptional in every way from the lighting to the layout to the décor. I arrived first and wished to be seated. The waitress took a very long time to come over to me and ask me if I wanted a drink which I was not too happy about as I kind of sat there twiddling my thumbs. Finally, I ordered a drink which was heavenly. The food, not so much. — Marinated Hamachi — Bleh. I eat hamachi for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This dish was not would I would expect from a 2-star Michelin restaurant. Sure, it was well plated. However, it didn’t taste great. + Cauliflower and almonds with grapes(I opted for no cheese) — Heavenly. Best dish! — Scallops — Again, meh. We ordered a couple more things that I wasn’t too thrilled about either. The ambiance/décor/drinks are amazing. The food in my opinion was just okay. I will have to come back and try it out as everyone seems to rave about The Modern.

Relatively easy to make same-day reservation for dinner. The ambiance and contemporary cuisine of The Modern complement MOMA very well. Enjoyed the wonderful, very creative 7-course tasting menu by Chef Abram Bissell. Some of the dishes were works of art, beautifully presented. The sauce for each dish was one of the highlights for me. Compliments to the dessert chef, as well. Worthy of the two Michelin stars. Like Per Se, gratuity is included. Service was wonderful, as expected from a restaurant of this quality. Highly recommended. : A

Darn, couldn’t get this review in before 2015 ended. My boyfriend was excited to try the Modern even before the upgrade from one Michelin star to two. After the upgrade, he was afraid the prices would go up and it would become even more crowded. He was right. I forget what the prices were before, but prices are now $ 122 for 3, $ 152 for 4, and $ 182 for 7. The price includes tip, but not tax, which I guess it means they tax on the tipped amount. Dessert is included as one of the courses for all three of the prices. We decided to go with the 4 course. Complimentary Starters: Bread Basket — The bread consisted of pain au lait with black sesame seeds and pretzel croissant. Both were so soft and buttery, that pretty much no butter is needed. Ask for refills! If I did not control myself I probably would have just gorged on this and be too full for the rest of the meal. Pumpkin soup with butternut squash, truffle vinaigrette, candied hazelnuts, white chocolate and hazelnut sabayon — One of my favorite dishes that night even though it was complimentary. Sweet, creamy, slightly spicy. I really liked the crunch from candied nuts and butternut squash, and the contrast of cold and warm from the sabayon. Course 1: Beet Marinated Lobster, Creamy Sorrel Vinaigrette — Very light dish. I thought the creamy sorrel didn’t match the lobster very well. Cauliflower Roasted in Crab Butter, Almonds, Tarragon and Lemon — You wouldn’t think this of cauliflower, but this was a very savory and rich dish. The cauliflower imbibed the flavor of the butter and crab. It had light citrus to cut through some of the richness. Best part was the pieces of actual crab. Course 2: Gently Seared Scallops, Matsutake Mushrooms and Fennel — Very bright tasting to match the bright green fennel sauce. The scallops were seared well, but there were barely any mushrooms. Turbot Roasted on the Bone, Celery Root Fondant and Black Truffle — Favorite dish of the night! The fish was incredibly flaky. I loved the sauce, which had a light taste of black truffle, but not too overpowering. Perfect dish! Course 3 Blanquette of Porcelet De Lait, Kohlrabi and Shallots — They use a really fatty piece of pork for this dish. It was incredibly hard to cut through or perhaps I needed a sharper knife. I loved the beurre blanc sauce and the pickled shallots provided a nice contrast to the savory sauce. The kohlrabi tastes like a cross between daikon radish and turnip. I liked this dish, but I wish I ordered the Slow Roasted Beef or Chicken Stuffed with Chestnuts instead. Glazed Fallow Venison, Lentils and Black Truffles — This cost an extra $ 12. That’s unfortunate since I was not a huge fan of this dish. The venison was very tender, not gamey at all, but flavorless. The vinaigrette did not give it that much flavor, neither did the lentils. Complimentary Palate Cleanser Shumai made of Coconut sorbet wrapped in candied mango — The presentation of this was so cute. The shumai was set upon tray of ice cold rocks and looked like little flowers. Very cold and refreshing to clear out the tastes of the previous courses before dessert. Course 4(Dessert) Almond Blancmange, Black Currants and Pear-Olive Oil Sorbet — I loved the pear-olive oil sorbet, which paired very well with the light almond flavor. Banana Bread Pudding, Milk Chocolate Mousse and Chicory Ice Cream — Interesting dessert. You break apart the cylindrical sugar tube and the mousse in liquid form spills out. Banana bread with walnuts is hidden at the bottom of the cylindrical tube. My favorite part was the chicory ice cream which had some crunchy granola type thing on top. Overall verdict, the Modern definitely deserves more than 1 Michelin star, but having just obtained the 2 Michelin stars, not sure if it’s quite there yet. If only 1.5 Michelin stars were a thing, but I guess you can’t even do that on Unilocal.I think I liked the complimentary dishes more than the actual ones on the menu, with the exception of the Turbot. Just give me a four course of that.

KenScale: 8.5÷10(Bar Room) It’s been a while since I went to the Bar Room at The Modern so I wanted to see how the food from chef Abram Bissell’s kitchen has evolved over time at the more casual part of the restaurant. I learned how terrific the Dining Room had become this summer, and was looking forward to a revisit to the Bar Room. Overall, the Bar Room hasn’t changed that much in terms of the direction, but most of the dishes were still solidly executed with nice precision and technique. The famed tart flambee with crème fraîche, onion and bacon is still as relevant as ever in terms of a go-too French bar food snack in the city. My companion and I devoured the entire pie in minutes. I also enjoyed cauliflower and almonds that came with cheddar cheese and grapes, a dish that was expertly prepared without much fussiness making it a great starting dish. For the main dish, pan-roasted salmon with black trumpet mushrooms and horseradish was very nicely cooked although the seasoning could’ve been slightly toned down. Roasted pork loin with plums, onions and mustard had very balance of flavor, but I wish the meat were on the slightly more tender side. You should never skip dessert at The Modern, as evidenced by the delightful Caraibe dark chocolate decandence that came with white chocolate cremeux and yogurt sorbet. The restaurant is still very crowded on Thursday, with a mix of tourists and locals who have probably just visited MoMA and work people looking to have a happy hour. If the Dining Room at The Modern is one of those special occasion restaurants in the city where you get to splurge on elegant fine dining, the Bar Room is a place where I would love to take friends every once in a while, with sophisticated yet not stuffy atmosphere that makes it ideal for happy hour or casual dinner.

Summary: Fantastic restaurant in the heart of midtown offering pre fixe menu fare. And, that’s not really doing it justice. 2 Michelin stars: an all around exquisite experience, food, service, atmosphere, drinks. Quadruple threat. This place may just be on its way to that coveted third star. Food: Since I’m sure the menu changes seasonally, I can only describe what I had in December 2015… 1st course: Beet marinated lobster. Presentation and taste were subtle yet inspiring and decadent. Neither the lobster nor the beetroot overpowered the other. Excellent marriage of taste. The creamy sorrel vinaigrette was light and fresh, an excellent accent for the dish. 2nd course: Gently seared scallops with black trumpet mushrooms and fennel. In my opinion, scallops are a dish that is extremely simple to mess up and quite difficult to master. These scallops were seared just right and melted in my mouth; the way scallops should. I’m not a fan of mushrooms, in general, however, these were just the right taste, texture, and smell to help carry the dish along. The fennel, a nice touch. 3rd course: Glazed fallow venison with lentils and black truffles. Okay, here is where the chef shines. I’m VERY picky when it comes to how rare I like my meat. It needs to be just right, just juicy, just melt-in-your-mouth enough for my taste and here I have to award the chef the greatest number of points. The venison medallions were exquisite. Perfection. Dessert: I got the PB& J which is the chef’s take on the classic after school snack. Araguani chocolate ganache with milk sorbet. It was like eating a puffy cloud that tasted lightly of PB&J. Fantastic. We also each got a special type of after dinner mint in the form of a milk sorbet ball wrapped in carameled fruit. Excellent. Drinks: Since this was a work dinner, my boss’s boss made the wine selections: a sauvignon blanc and a pinot noir; neither name I caught, unfortunately. I briefly perused the wine list, however, and saw that the selection was quite extensive. Would love to return, just for the wine in the bar room. Atmosphere: I have to throw out the pun here: the atmosphere was quite modern. As one can see from others’ pictures, the bar room is something reminiscent of the 60’s Mad Men style but it is quite modern, 21st century. The dining room overlooks the MoMA garden which is a nice touch. The acoustics were absolutely excellent for conversation. Not too loud, not too quiet. Just right. Service: Ah, another gold star for this restaurant! We had some coworkers visiting from San Fran and they put it best. The servers were there when needed, not overbearing, not noticeable, yet always attentive. Very skilled, very knowledgeable. For a city dweller such as myself, these guys definitely stand out among the rest, and especially in the midtown area.

I’ve been working in midtown for over 4 years, and The Modern continues to be my go-to place for client lunches. It definitely falls under corporate-card spending because the price tag is fairly high. If you’re spending your own money, be honest with your budget and look at the menu prices because you can easily drop $ 30 on a single glass of wine. What I love best about The Modern is that it isn’t on the crazy holiday tourist radar, probably because it’s two blocks away from Rockefeller Center. While Del Friscos Grill, Brasserie Ruhlmann, and Limani are filled to the brim with ruddy-faced people in sneakers, The Modern remains an oasis. Interestingly, they’ve banned tipping so you just have to sign when you’re done. Now onto the FOOD which is excellent in both the Bar Room and the more formal, prix fixe Dining Room that overlooks the sculpture garden. In the Bar Room, I recommend — Tarte Flambé: high end thin pizza. Odd smell but it’s delicious — Steak Tartare — Fall Squash Soup: perfect for a cold day. Thick and filling. — Seared Scallops — Roasted Pork Loin What I wouldn’t get: The Lobster Sausage. It’s just a weird, unsatisfying combo. You neither get chunks of lobster nor the delicious unique taste of sausage. Everything I’ve eaten in the Dining Room has been good, so no specific recommendations there. Just dress up in slightly loose clothes and be prepared for impeccable service.

«The man doth protest too much, methinks», murmurs an inner voice as I scream myself hoarse that culinary awards mean nothing to me, and that I do not care to dine at restaurants that are known for the accolades they have received from food critics. I have always insisted on obeying my own palate rather than being swayed by the opinion of any culinary authority. While I never have allowed my enjoyment of food to be influenced by the Michelin stars or James Beard awards bestowed upon a restaurant, or the magazines it is featured in, I am forced to acknowledge that The Modern does indeed deserve every bit of the honors it has ever received. I have begun to question whether all of my protestations against the authority of culinary organizations were merely attempts to conceal my sinful, kinky love for The Modern. Love, as we know, demands great sacrifice. Accordingly, I have worked well into the late hours of the night, just so I could take a long lunch break and treat myself to lunch at the Modern every now and then. The service is attentive and amiable, without being intrusive on one hand or stiff on the other. The food is delicious, and exquisitely crafted and plated. The two dishes with the most beautiful presentation, to my eye, are the foie gras tart and the green apple mousse. My two favorite dishes are the cauliflower cooked in crab butter and the chicken breast stuffed with chestnuts. The latter looks like a small portion when it arrives, but is really very filling. The finely chopped chestnuts are stuffed underneath the crispy chicken skin, and the chicken breast is dressed in a rich foie gras gravy. Among the desserts I have tried, my favorite is the vanilla bavarois, which is served with a scoop of root beer ice cream. If possible, request to be seated by the window for views of the MoMA sculpture garden. This may sound hackneyed, but a meal at The Modern invariably brightens up my disposition for the rest of the day.

An outstanding dinner — 4.5 rating based on my experience. I came here last Friday night(11⁄13) with my girlfriend for the first time. We were overdue for an upscale date so I made reservations last month via OpenTable(restaurant policy is up to 28 days in advance) to ensure we started eating at a reasonable hour. Suit jacket and slacks for me; dress for her — we felt comfortable in this attire. We thoroughly enjoyed the ambience. The table and flower arrangements, intimate lighting, and view of the MoMA’s Sculpture Garden made for a beautiful setting. The staff was not only professional and attentive, but they also were personable. It speaks volumes when the staff takes some extra time to get to know their customers, which we appreciated throughout our meal. Drink: We ordered a bottle of red wine from Southern France(Domaine de Trevallon, Alpilles 2010) with the helpful assistance from the sommelier. He made a great recommendation based on our preferences, which included something full-bodied and earthy. His knowledge was invaluable considering the wine list is 102 pages. Dinner: We ordered the tasting menu, which was seven courses(note — there is an additional course of white truffle risotto for a $ 50 supplement). The food was well prepared and tasted excellent. The caviar, lobster, and beef were some of my favorites. Dessert: We could not make up our minds when the dessert cart came to our table at the end of the meal. Our server told us not to worry, as she gave us a piece of every dessert to try! This was 17 different types of dessert by my count. It was truly appreciated and delicious. We look forward to coming back here again soon. I highly recommend trying it!

The Modern has just got upgraded from Michelin one star to two star and has been the only upgrade in the past years — there must be something mysteriously special about this place and I am here to dig it up. Both prex-fixe and tasting menu has been offered at the dining room and I presume there’s even a la carte in the bar room. We opted for the tasting just to experience everything. Among all dishes, my favorite has really been the watermelon sorbet. Not a big fan of foie gras, I’m really not able to give a unprejudiced commentary on that piece. Last thing that impressed me would be the dessert on the cart — a handful of selection and you could choose among it — very much Per Se like. I strongly recommend the raspberry marshmallow. I guess if there’s one thing stands out about the Modern, it would be the ambience. It would be even nicer to dine at Modern during daytime so as to view the yard of Moma from a completely different angle.

The modern is a great place to dine whether it’s a special occasion or a regular elegant outing. We were seated right away with what I thought was one of the best seats in the house. The staff is incredibly friendly and attentive. They really felt like your close friends serving you at a 2 Star Michelin restaurant. We elected with the tasting menu which consisted of: Caviar with egg on egg on egg. Simply delicious. One of my favorites of the night. Milk bread(deliciously moist) and Pretzel croissant(buttery flaky goodness) Lobster with beet was really enjoyable. Tangy, sweet and refreshing. The beet was more of a star than the lobster. Foie gras mousse pie was okay. I’m more a fan of whole pan seared foie gras than mousse. White truffle risotto was delicious. Was it worth $ 75? Probably not. Turbot was another fine dish. A cross between halibut and founder. Flavorful and rich. Beef and broccoli to simply put it was my favorite dish of the night. Steak was tender enough to cut with a spoon. Broccoli was infused with garlic, wine and cheese. Large pieces of black truffle with truffle sauce. Watermelon was okay. Sorbet. Chocolate dessert was really good. Cluster of chocolate rice crispies, chocolate ganache mousse and a spoonful of Nutella ice cream. Loved everything about it. Especially eating while the Mets swept the Cubs in the NLCS.

Amazing place for an elegant dinner. The portions look small, but by the time you leave you will be stuffed! I’m a vegetarian and the staff was very accommodating and made sure I was able to enjoy the selection. We had the three course meal and got cocktails. We all got the one way ticket cocktail to start. It was sweet and refreshing. For the appetizer, I had the truffle stuffed tomatoes. My friend got the gnocchi and both were excellent. There were no vegetarian entrees, but the chef whipped up an eggplant and cauliflower dish. Then for dessert, we tried the warm caramel financier. I highly recommend all of the dishes we tried! I’m sure you can’t go wrong with any of the dishes!
