I’m don’t typically write reviews but I felt compelled to speak to the deep void in NYC cuisine that is quality Cajun. It appears that this void has finally been filled. After reading an article about these Bro’s and their gumbo I decided to head over to Broadway Bites and check it out. What I found were a couple of real life LSU grads slinging the finest Cajun food the big apple has ever tasted. The gumbo, po-boys, and beignets were just as good as anything you will find in New Orleans. They also have a «Hurricane» that is pretty damn good too. All in all, the Gumbo Bro’s have got the NYC Cajun scene down. I look forward to hitting their brick and mortar in Brooklyn in a few months when it opens.

Since I am from Louisiana, and it’s normal to crave gumbo, I figured I would try Gumbo Bros while in the City for work. I wasn’t overly impressed, but the taste was good. The roux lacked thickness for me and not nearly enough meat. Also, the bowls could be deeper and not as wide, as it’s not very easy to eat gumbo in a plate-like structure(picky, eh?, lol). They are located in Herald Square/34th St.

Glad these guys are back at Madison Square Eats for the fall! The Nanny’s is my personal favorite, excellent roux with great andouille sausage and chicken.

These guys are still rocking the New York Cajun scene doing catering and will be at a few food fairs coming up. You can catch them at Broadway bites all June and July under the moniker Nola Sno– where they’re turning out legit New Orleans snoballs.

Love this place! Had the pleasure of eating there twice while they were at Columbus Circle Holiday Market and just recently at a catering event they did at my office. I can’t get enough! The guys are super friendly and helpful. I wasn’t sure which flavor to try, so they let me sample the chicken, veggie, and seafood. Seafood was my fav hands-down! Super flavorful and fresh, with just the right amount of kick to it. These guys are the real deal!

Discovered Gumbo Bros at Broadway Bites. The most dull, bland, non-traditional Cajun«gumbo» that I have ever tried. A trendy rendition of Alpo. I ordered a spicy Gumbo and what I got was a Can of dog food. Immediately, I tried to fix it with salt or anything else in arms length, no avail. The next option was the trash can so in it went.

My fiancé and I, both from south Louisiana, were walking through the Columbus Circle Holiday Market tonight and were surprised to see a gumbo booth. Like other commenters, I’ve had hundreds of bowls of gumbo in my life. And this place IS legit. The Nanny’s gumbo with the dark roux is reallllllly good. Now that I know this place is here until at least through Christmas, I guarantee I’ll be back several more times. The guy working the booth was really nice, too.

I visited the Gumbo Bros. as part of my afternoon eating my way through Broadway Bites. My best friend attended college in southern Louisiana and I’ve had my share of REAL gumbo and this is unquestionable authentic gumbo. The gumbo is hearty and flavorful. Even though I drench mine in Trappey’s Red Devil it is still delicious without it. The customer service takes the Gumbo Bros experience to another level. These are the sweetest guys you will ever meet and they are genuinely concerned in making sure you have a good time. Their next stop after #BwayBites is Columbus Circle. I hope they are able to get a food truck and continue slangin’ gumbo goodness all over NYC. I LOVED my meal here and look forward to another visit soon.

Louisiana starved me, it did. My SO is from Louisiana and finding a place to eat during visits was a chore. Gumbo is a famous Louisiana food, and while it was everywhere, I couldn’t have it. Then, the lovely got sick last week, and picky eaters make most soups out of the question, so I thought I’d do something nice and try to find some gumbo. NYC does not have a great many places that serve Cajun/Creole food, so I was looking around on Unilocal, and The Gumbo Bros was up as the ad listing. I took a look at their menu and lo and behold, vegan gumbo. Sold. Off I went. I didn’t catch the name of the guy behind the fleur-de-lys counter, but he was incredibly friendly. We chatted for a bit about my SO, LSU and Louisiana, and we ended by him telling me that he’s throwing in an Abita beer, that he hopes my SO feels better, and that I should pray for the Tigers because their season is pretty shaky so far. His friendliness alone was enough to make me want to come back. But the gumbo… Oh, the gumbo. I never knew how much my life was missing without it. I added a few splashes of hot sauce for good measure(and because I put it on everything) and it was so, so good I was sad to see it go. The lover also liked it a lot, which I guess is an authentic stamp of approval. Considering gumbo is an incredibly time consuming dish to make, I’m sure the guys at Gumbo Bros eat, sleep, and think gumbo, but I’m glad they do.

Being from Louisiana you know good gumbo when you taste it and Gumbo Bros is GREAT gumbo. They don’t mess around and stay true to the way Louisianians mix their herbs and spices to create the perfect flavors. Can’t make it to Louisiana for gumbo? Don’t worry, get a bowl of the Bros’ and you’re set. Just like mom used to make! *Sidenote: ALWAYS put potato salad in your gumbo.

These southern gentlemen sure now how to cook! By far the best gumbo I’ve ever had. I don’t take the time to review very many restaurants, but this stuff is worth waiting in line for!

I may not be a gumbo expert, but I know what good food tastes like. The Gumbo Bros is where it is at. Warm, dark, spicy, slow cooked roux lovingly made by a charming duo of Southern gents. If you’ve never had gumbo make this your first experience. If you have had gumbo then here is the best place in NYC to get your cajun fix. They even serve a vegan version(appropriately called the Voodoo Vegan) that is a hypnotic blend of garlic, greens, and black-eyed peas. WARNING: Don’t leave without getting a glass of sweet tea. They serve it with a slice of sugar cane just like my grandma.

Gumbo. Bros. Is. Legit. I stopped by The Gumbo Bros stand for lunch at Mad.Sq.Eats. The guys are super friendly(must be the southern charm) and recommended Nanny’s Cajun, their classic gumbo based off of one of the owner’s grandma’s recipes. I wasn’t feeling well and I swear this gumbo healed me… It was like being at your family home, with mom cooking up classic family recipes while you’re snuggled under a bunch of blankets kind of comforting. The portion was HUGE, came with rice and had more than enough sausage/chicken to fill me up for hours. So many good flavors going on in there, and you can even kick it up a notch with Tabasco. I wanted to try the Voodoo Vegan option, but they moved to Broadway Bites when Mad Sq Eats finished– Ill have to check it out! Perfect for the cooling weather. TL;DR * huge portions * comfort food * good value for $

Stopped by The Gumbo Bros stand for lunch this past weekend… again. This was the 5th time I have been to visit and I am still hooked. I’m originally from southern Louisiana, right outside of New Orleans, and based on my gumbo experience– this gumbo and these guys are the real deal. I’ve tried every flavor multiple times, so here are my two cents: Cajun — Perfectly dark roux. Delicious shredded dark meat chicken and chunks of andouille sausage… hits the spot every time. Creole — Best dish. My only complaint is that I always want more. It’s a bit spicier than the Cajun but its just how I like it– full of flavor, spice, and fresh shrimp! Vegan — Perfect for when you’re in the mood for something a little less heavy but still filling. The collard greens and black eyed peas remind me of home cookin. Add a little tabasco. AND I’m not done. Be sure to wash all this goodness down with a cold Abita Root beer. One of my favorite guilty pleasures from home, made with real Louisiana cane sugar. Couldn’t believe they sold it the first time I visited! Highly recomend coming here– you won’t regret it.

I’m from Louisiana, so I’ve eaten hundreds of bowls of gumbo in my life. I’ve had great gumbo, terrible gumbo, and everything in between. It’s one of the best comfort foods on earth, but it’s hard to find acceptable gumbo outside of south Louisiana, let alone New York. I walked by this booth at Madison Square Eats, and I got a little chuckle out of people in New York trying to adequately make this amazing dish, but at the same time I noticed that there was a lot of buzz around the booth. I looked them up online, and the guys who started the company are from Louisiana, so I decided to give it a shot. I got the Nanny’s Cajun, because I think the best gumbo is simple, with chicken and sausage. Surprisingly, this stuff was among the best I’ve ever had! It was perfectly spiced with a dark roux, and I knew they were legit when I saw they offer potato salad(this is usually done only in south Louisiana, and I highly recommend getting a scoop of it right in the middle). If you’re in the area, you have to stop by. If you’re not in the area, get there. You won’t find gumbo like this anywhere else in New York. Laissez le bon temps rouler!
