Quintessential LES Institution. They are shutting their factory down and relocating to Jersey. Why !!! Really … Anyway, the Streit’s will continue to make delicious Matzos. Never discontinue the Onion Poppy Moonstrips and the Dark Chocolate Egg Matzos!!!

Stopped in just before they shuttered and relocate out of state, a welcoming operation steeped in tradition, and their product makes the best of a hard-to-make-edible foodstuff. RIP

This is a quintessential lower east side immigrant food experience. Matzah, the bread of affliction and migration for the Jewish people is historically understand as a dry, tasteless cracker closer to cardboard than bread. But here, at least until they shutter the doors in April(b/c the original Matzah oven needs replacements that simply cannot be made), visitors can sample a fresh cracker for free. And oh, how good this cracker is… it is like eating a fresh summer peach for the first time after being relegated to canned fruit cocktails your whole life. People can, and will continue to, disparage matzah. But when it is fresh, oy, it’s so good. Make your bubbe – or the NYT – proud and stop in to pat your respects. Ess gesunterheit.

I was walking down the street with a friend in the Lower East Side when we smelled this delicious familiar smell we know. As we got closer the Smell became more familiar. I peeked into a open window and I saw the production of the matzah cracker and it was Awesome. As we watched the production and speaking with one of the workers he offered us a sheet each of the cracker. It was Hot and Delicious. One of the Best I have tried. I would recommend this place to anyone that is a Matzah Lover.

If you blink you’ll miss it, so don’t blink. Really great little shop for all of your Streit’s staples. They even had a cold pressed organic olive oil from Israel that I picked up. The man at the counter was amazingly nice(what a mensch!) and even gave me a free piece of whole wheat matzo right off the line. It was warm and fresh. Definitely the best matzo I’ve ever had. If you’re near you must stop by! NOTE: Cash only!

Want to see real history? Then stop in at the Streit’s factory and store. I mean this is where the Matzoth in the pink boxes REALLY is baked! since 1925. Super friendly staff told me sure look in at the oven. If you have come to buy matzoth then you will see a nice selection of stuff you never see in the store such as my favorite spelt. plus much cheaper prices. the lower east side has changed so much from the days I knew it as a child but Streits is still there and baking strong ps plus the neighborhood seems much safer

My friend and I recently stumbled on this Lower East side gem while perusing the neighborhood for a drink locale(obviously we were overwhelmed with choice!). Not only can you watch matzoh actually being made right there before your eyes, you can also snag a taste of the stuff, literally hot off the press! And you can stock up on supplies for your Rosh Hashanah dinner and view some very cool art at the very same time! Check out for more info. This is just one of the reasons why I love the Lower East Side — you never know what’s around the next corner!
