There is a Russian sandwich I believe it might just be called the Russian. It has roast beef, Russian sauce on it with Swiss cheese. This is the sandwich to get. It was such a find. The bread was delicious, juicy roast beef and the sauce coated everything is flavor. This was great. Get this sandwich.

Buyers beware for dishonest merchants! Came here once before and thought their was pretty decent. So, after an intense workout, I stopped by here to order a sandwich for both me and my boyfriend. Sandwiches are advertised for $ 5.50 and it comes with a free soda. So I ordered my sandwiches with lettuce and tomatoes, one was from the list but I ordered another type of chicken because what was on the menu had run out. So my order should come out to approximately $ 11.00. I get to the front and am told that I must pay $ 15.00. I told the cashier that is wrong… my sandwiches were $ 5.50 a piece. The person who made my order told me he charged me for lettuce and tomatoes and the substitute chicken. The person behind me in line even said he had heard not of charging for lettuce and tomatoes in NYC. I told the merchant it was the last time I would come here. Sandwiches were not that great this time around. 1 star is for dishonest advertising or lack there of.

I accidentally confused this with another deli I found on Unilocal, but I didn’t realize until I started eating my sandwich. I ordered an Italian sub, which in my experience of NY delis means about 3 Italian meats(including salami and prosciutto), roasted red peppers, cheese, oil and vinegar. I GOT ham with mystery salami, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a giant heaping of Italian dressing. It comes with a free soda or water, but at $ 8, I don’t think that’s even worth it. It was rather large and the bread seemed fresh, but I tried everything to dab off the generous slather of dressing. My fault, I should have asked for a description of all ingredients, but come on. Am I wrong about what an Italian sub means in NYC? I didn’t realize I was in Times Square where tourists don’t know anything about food.

As I was stumbling back to my hotel room, I was searching for something to eat to absorb all that alcohol that I had been drinking. Well, Star Gourmet seemed like it was the only thing open at 2am in the morning on 6th Ave.(Avenue of the Americas) If you are actually thinking that the name(Star Gourmet) has anything to do with this place, you are certainly wrong. It is not«Gourmet.» It is just convenient food IF there isn’t anything else available. They seem to have lots of food choices though. I ordered the chicken fajita panini. It was not that great. I realized when I ordered it that it was already premade and the person just microwaved it. I know because I saw the person behind the counter pull it out of the refrigerator, and microwave it. The pizza was also in the back, but it also didn’t look too appetizing as though it had been sitting back there for a while. Perhaps these deli’s in New York need to be experienced by trial and error.

One thing i really hate about working in Chelsea is you can’t find many cheap food spots that are actually good. Unless you go to the delis run by minorities, you are getting some sandwich or wrap with 2 pieces of meat for 9.50 $. I’m down when my boss is paying, but it isn’t something i can afford on the regular. Come on, lets be serious, alcoholism is more important… Which is why i go to Star Gourmet. It’s a generic deli, with a generic deli menu, but the hotplate lunch special is incredible. At 7.50 with a bottle of water(or can of soda) and entrée with 2 sides, this is easily the most economical and delicious meal you get in Chelsea. The entrees I’ve had here are quite good and fresh every time; Lemon Chicken, Eggplant Parmesan, Beef Strognoff, Pan-Fried tilapia. Sides are good too; gandules and rice, creamy mac and cheese, basil steamed vegetables. While it is a basic deli menu, there is actually a distinct difference in quality and freshness. Ya the guy at the register is rude, but lets do a comparison between the guy here and other spots. Some guy who’s probably had a hard life vs. some pretentious college kid ringing you up for a 10 dollar 6 inch wrap talking about some spice nobody has ever heard to sound special. Choice is easy, that old school New York flavor baby; Star gourmet Deli

What do you crave late at night post-club, post-boozefest? Pizza. Sure places like Artichoke and Grimaldi’s have great pizza, but Star Gourmet has AMAZING cheap pizza all night long. It is a little pizza secret that I’m sharing with you. While you’re at it, grab a tub of Ben and Jerry’s icecream or cereal… but definitely go to the back of the deli and grab a slice of pizza — it will satisfy you in ways you can’t even imagine. Deliciously heated, cheese, pepperoni, veggies — you might not think the pizza LOOKS like the most incredible you’ve ever had, but believe me looks are deceiving. I have been visiting this joint pretty much every Saturday night since I moved here over a year ago and it doesn’t look like my visits will be slowing down anytime soon.
