Shampoo Avenue B

Have been a client at Shampoo Avenue B for a few years now, and my love for the place just keeps growing. Since they moved to their new and (much needed) bigger space the waiting area comfort level has much improved. The place always has a friendly vibe, and the staff couldn’t be nicer. My stylist Jen always listens and never fails to make me happy. Jen even managed to squeeze me into her very booked schedule to help me out when I called her last minute. It’s that kind of service that has kept me going back!

I’ve tried a few salons since moving to the city a couple of years ago and this was the first one that stuck and I have been back multiple times (and not just because they offer you a beverage and don’t judge you if you decide on a beer at 10am).
They listen to what I want but also make suggestions based on my type of hair and face shape. I wish I could recommend a particular person but I’ve gone with a different person each of the three times and have left happy.

I’ve been a client for about a year now, I go there every 2 months for color and cut and Jen is my girl. I love it there: clean, hip place, super friendly staff and my hair looks amazing every single time. Highly recommend!

I’ve been to Shampoo Avenue B twice for haircuts with Raquel. These have been two of the best haircuts I’ve ever had in my life. To begin with, the staff is very attentive and courteous, and Raquel is incredibly kind and professional. She understood exactly what I wanted and executed it impeccably. I have been trying to grow out my hair, and she cut it so that there have never been any of those awkward grow-​out phases — it’s looked great at every stage. I also have a weird straight/​wavy/​curly texture — my hair can’t make up its mind — and I’ve never had a cut work better with it. Prices are totally reasonable, and for NYC, a steal. Totally recommended!

The obvious emphasis on excellence in regards to not only actual services like cut and color but also making sure your experience there is memorable makes this salon very special. Love Shampoo Avenue B! You will NOT be disappointed!

This was my second time here and they did an amazing job. I was with Erica, my first time using this hairstylist and she understood exactly how I wanted my hair cut and styled. I am very particular and picky with haircuts and hairstylists –in the past, others usually just butcher my hair and do what they want or they think looks nice, but i am very happy with my cut — long layers, v-​shape in the back, and framing the face. Also very good customer service from receptionist to the assistants — (which is rare these days). I also like the coat check and complimentary beverage!

Reasons you should pay generously for a hair cut at least once in your lifetime:
— If you have a picture of a hairstyle that you want, your hairdresser WILL do your hair exactly like that. They use magical Hair Photoshop 3D with their hands.
— A hair cut includes salon shampoo, conditioner, sculpting cream, and texture spay. Shampoo Ave B uses R+Co and Oribe. These are undoubtedly high-​end and divine. I absolutely love these luxurious brands so I am happy to see them on shelves.
— Absolutely impeccable services. I had an appointment with Jen. She offered me wine, she took my coat, she analyzed each part of my hair very carefully, and she did my hair cut in exactly 1 hour of the appointment.
— Everyone in the salon is pretty chic, from hairdressers to customers. The salon has beautiful crystal chandeliers. The venue makes you feel like you are sitting in the trendy upscale SoHo instead of the punk rock East Village.
Tip 1: 20% off if you want to stock up 2 hair products from R+Co or Oribe.
Tip 2: Gratitude is only in cash.

Unfortunate bang trim. They didn’t do what I asked for and cut it far too short in an awful uneven way. It’s blunt choppy and totally makes me embarrassed to be in public. :(

Just had an excellent experience at Shampoo Avenue B with Jennifer.
Moved 3 blocks and discovered a whole new range of salons in the area on Unilocal.Called after work and scheduled an appt that day and used the Unilocal deal (but the price w/​o it is still reasonable).
Jennifer gave me sound advice and gave me an excellent cut. I’m done shopping around for a salon! See you soon – have my white wine waiting for me!

The place is great! I had the pleasure working with Jade, she’s so awesome! Highly recommend her and this salon.
The staff is so professional and the salon is clean and accommodating. I’ve had such negative experiences in New York, this was a refreshing experience to have a great hair stylist to work with and a salon that was spotless, priced fairly and over all super friendly. You won’t regret coming here, and definitely go to Jade she’s amazing!

I’ve been going to Shampoo Avenue B for over a year and am moving on to another salon. It’s often difficult to get an appointment and while I think they do a satisfactory job I never walk out of there feeling like I got a fabulous haircut or color, every time I’ve asked for a change up from my stylist she shrugs. Same old same old.
My new stylist at Dress absolutely nailed my first haircut, and I was blown away by how much more friendly they are there.
One last thing, I only just realized that after a year and a half of $ 200+ appointments every 8 weeks I’ve only earned $ 20 in points. What a joke.
**update** Soon after posting this the owner of Shampoo Avenue B contacted me, offering 20% off my next service and acknowledged most of the points in my earlier review. I’ve got an appointment today, so will update my review based off the experience.

I came to get rid of split ends and left with a head full of split ends!
I came here to use the Unilocal $ 40 for $ 20 deal. Everything was fine and my wait was about 15ish minutes on a Saturday.
My stylist Erik was a nice guy. The reason I am giving one star is that he only used a razor on my hair. The reason I came to get a haircut was to cut off the split ends, and I told this to the stylist. As a result of blunt razor use, I came home to a head FULL OF SPLIT ENDS. NOT okay.
I need to get this botched cut fixed to get rid of all the split ends.
I would not come back here. I’m too scared for my hair.

This is my first and only Unilocal review.
My experience here: It looks like a child took my pony tail and literally cut it off, leaving the front of my hair the same length (3.5 inches longer then the back). To say it as nicely as I can — It’s not good and I’ll never return. I now have to go elsewhere to get this monstrosity fixed. The miscommunication, which left me with a full on mom (hopefully a hot one Bc I’m not one) due, I believe stemmed from the fact that I could not hear my stylist. In the beginning she asked me if I wanted my hair longer!?! Huh? I said that I wanted a touch up which left me with a crooked, crazy haircut that I can only laugh about now.

Where do I start?! If I could give it 10 stars I would. I was recommended to Angela by a relative. She did an amazing job on her. I called and made an appointment after seeing they offered olaplex. I wanted something that required the product, to achieve the results I wanted. I came with a picture and Angela snapped me back into reality… Ironically, she delivered better results than my «wish pic». I am in love with my new color and Angela is now part of my Christmas list. I love her! I’m so happy! My hair is everything!
The staff is professional and friendly. The place is nice and crisp with a hint of bling.

I have thick, dense, curly hair. It’s not an easy head for stylists to navigate. It grew out pretty tall and big, heartbroken as I was to lose my long-​time stylist after a cross-​country move.
But finally, it was time.
Roya dove right in, fearless, asking questions as she went and making me feel comfortable with the whole thing. The mid-​point of the cut is usually where things go awry – the varied grains of my hair make putting together a cohesive look challenging for many.
But at that point, Roya was laser-​focused, parting and trimming the hair into manageable regions that integrated seamlessly with their neighbors. By the end, everything was tidy and clean – and I felt like myself again.
It’s also a bright shop that’s easy to get around in, so high marks for a convenient and pleasant location.
Easy to recommend, especially if you know your hair needs a deft, thoughtful touch.

After 3-​years of coming to Shampoo Ave B for sporadic haircuts, I finally decided to give it a shot with a color treatment. I’ve been speaking with Sylyse (my man!) about my color needs for the past couple of months. I made the appointment in July and had severe anxiety leading up to it. I’ve only trusted one colorist ever, but she’s in the depths of suburban Long Island. It was time.
Sylyse is killer. He’s a senior stylist for a reason: the man does not disappoint. At my last haircut, we discussed the direction that I wanted to head from a color perspective. I’ve had ombré highlight (sombre) for almost two years. By this point, my highlights were looking copper, lifeless, and dull. I told Sylyse I wanted a bombshell brunette balayage with richness and contrast… and boy, did he deliver! I have the most beautiful hair color I’ve ever had. My hair feels so luxe and I’ve been getting all sorts of compliments.
Overall, the experience with my first color treatment at Shampoo Ave B exceeded my expectations from a results standpoint. Generally speaking, the customer care at this salon has been very consistent. Everyone is attentive and pleasant. They raise the bar on the salon experience.

First time with Raquel. Raquel is pretty good in skills, she is patient, done to the perfection, recommend!
Interesting that I went to dinner one block away, before getting the check, my waitress asked me: «can I ask you a question ?» It was silent for a few seconds, then she said, how you have your forehead hair like that? I said I just had a haircut one block away, I gave her a promotion gift card I got for, and recommended her to Raquel, she was happy, me too:)

I absolutely LOVE everything about this place!!!
[back story] I’ve been trying to find a place I can intrust my beloved, hard to lift, long as hell, very blonde hair to. The thought of trying a new colorist was extremely scary after seeing mine for 10yrs!
I walked by and was drawn into this place by the beautiful ambience and chandeliers. Looks super classy and clean! Inquired about pricing with the receptionist, who was super friendly, felt genuine and helpful. Booked an appointment for 2 days later. I received an email to confirm my appointment the next day.
Arrived about 15 mins early for my appointment, my stylist was finishing up. An assistant helped me with a robe and offered me something to drink. Raquel was able to start me a little early. I explained my fear of my hair being over processed and falling out or under proceeded and turning orange. She really seemed to understand and helped alleviate my fear.
The shampoo girl (sorry didn’t catch her name) did an amazing job and gave the most blissful head massage I’ve ever had, when I walked over to the blow dry station, I felt like I woke up from an hour massage! She also did a wonderful blowout!
I can’t say enough great things about this place, everyone I encountered was awesome, especially Raquel! I walked out feeling like a million bucks :)

There is a reason this place as 4.5 stars with 900+ reviews — it’s amazing!!!
I have had some pretty awful haircuts and a few decent ones. but never had I had one where I absolutely loved it even weeks after. As someone with long hair, I always fear that my hair scissor-​happy stylist will translate my «1 or 2 inches off the bottom» for more like 5 or 6″! That definitely wasn’t the case this time.
I got a cut with Sylyse a few weeks ago on a Thursday. I purposely waited a few weeks to make sure I still loved my cut before writing the review (because we all know that feeling when you leave the salon and then can never recreate the look your stylist left you with!). Sylyse started by asking me what I wanted to do and to show him exactly how short I wanted it. He asked me a few questions about how I typically style it at home and how I like my part. It took him less than an hour to cut, layer, thin out and give my hair some amazing texture! And the amazing blow out he gave me had me feeling like a super model when I walked out. I also really appreciated that he kept the conversation going without forcing it too much, as I feel like some hair stylists often do.
Their new place is beautiful as well! They moved into the new space earlier this year and it’s beautifully done — very classy and spacious. The people at the front desk were very polite and helpful. Paid with card and was able to get change for tip, which you can leave in provided envelopes instead of having to hand it to them in person. They also have a referral system — so if you refer a friend, they and you get $ 20 (I think?) off the next cut.
Bottom line: It sucks having to pay $ 60 – 80 for a haircut, period. But that’s what you’re looking at no matter where you go in the city. At least here you know you can get your money’s worth! Nothing ruins your day like a bad haircut.
