Kropps & Bobbers has excellent dreadlocks maintenance. Truly spectacular. I have kinky hair and I live in the neighborhood. I’d passed this place a gazillion times and noticed that they advertised dreadlock maintenance. Because the shop doesn’t look particularly rasta-centric, I never took the proclamation seriously. I figured K&B was a salon dabbling in some novice twisting. Well, my skepticism hit me in the wallet… I rolled the dice on another local place that claims to be dread pros and was left wanting; my hair was a mess for what I paid for at the other place. Enter Joni. She repaired my previous dread hack job in record time, and had my hair looking neat and orderly again. K&B can create that awesome spiked afro look that looks so cool in recent ads(think Maxwell circa 1998). K&B can also help you maintain your dreads *without* not washing them for many months — that alone is worth a visit! So, brothers and sisters. It may not seem like the place… but for sure K&B can give you an awesome natural do. Talk to Joni for a consultation and some work. You won’t be disappointed.

I don’t know what M.H.‘s review about Jackie even means… Jackie has always done a super job coloring and cutting my hair. The salon is far from where I live but Jackie is absolutely worth it to me. If I want side swoopy bangs. Bam! I got ‘em. Long layers? No problem. Shorter layers near the face? Easy peasy. And they’re always the right length. She’s never cut too much off where I get freaked out and I’ve never had to go back and ask her to do something again. Also, it’s easier to take more off then put it back on, so I’d rather her do less and leave room for me to say«take more off!» But even then – I’ve never had to. I have super dark brown hair and she got it to a fiery red when I wanted it. Then she was able to bring it down months later when I wanted a different look(I like changing with the seasons). She typically colors my hair, washes it out real good so my dye isn’t dying my towels for weeks to come, then cuts it, dries it and checks again to make any trims or adjustments after its dried. I went in TODAY and left feeling like a new woman. I find Jackie to be easy to talk to, and thorough. I’ve been going to her for 3 years. I highly recommend her for cuts and colors. And if you have questions about products, just ask. She doesn’t try to push products, she’ll educate you if you want to know what’s good for your hair. Thanks Jackie!

When I moved to the city in 2004, one of my biggest fears was finding someone to cut my hair. I have curly hair and as those of us with curly hair know, finding someone who can do it right isn’t easy. I looked online at salons and read reviews. I finally made an appointment with a woman named Jackie. 11 years later Jackie is the only person in the metro area I will let touch my hair. I lost my job a time or two in the 11 years I have lived here. In order to save money, I let someone other than Jackie(2 other stylists) cut my hair a few times when I was unemployed… man did I ever regret letting someone else touch my hair. I am super bad at making appointments in advance, and Jackie has always been able to find time to cut my hair even at the last minute. She is easy to talk to, and after all these years I now feel like I am going to see a friend when I get my hair cut. IF I ever move back to Texas, I’ll have to make enough money to come back every few months to get my hair cut and or fly Jackie to Texas. Kropps & Bobbers is also a great salon. It is a very chill place, and they will even let your text for an appointment which is great as the buildings where I work and live have horrible call reception.

Awful Awful Awful!!! This review is for Jackie. Not only does she not know how to cut but she was rude when I went back for her to fix it. If you go there, STAYAWAY from Jackie!!! I never ever went through an experience like this where a stylist was a bitch to me and makes it my fault rather than trying to work with me to fix the haircut. I’ve been to so many salons and tried so many different ways of cutting hair(wet and dry) and I’ve never seen anyone so sloppy in taking sections and cutting(or should I say butchering). I don’t think she knows how to layer and when I went back to have more layers put in as there was still no shape, she did the same thing as last time(long layers) — no real difference. When she started getting really rude with me, I finally said stop, as I lost all faith in her skills and wanted to save what was left of my hair. PS — Jackie, if you say you’re going to cut hair dry, then cut hair dry. You don’t take a water bottle to it and wet it down.

Best color experience ever! I’ve had my hair cut and colored by Joni for a few years now and I absolutely love her work. I have Asian hair and have always had a hard time getting the exact ashy blonde color I envisioned. I’ve continuously been rejected by Asian salons because they weren’t confident with the outcome. Joni is always open to experimenting and trying whatever I have in mind. She is patient and accommodating. Very chill atmosphere. I highly recommend Joni!

When I first moved to NYC from SF, I had no idea how I was going to find a colorist who I could trust. Luckily, I ended up taking yoga class from a teacher with really fabulous hair. When I approached her to find out where she went, she told me that Joni from Kropps and Bobbers was the very best. I immediately hustled myself over there, and have always been so grateful that I dd. Since meeting Joni(owner of K&B) I’ve never wanted to have my hair done anywhere else-I can honestly say that she does the best work of anyone that I’ve met. Hair styling genius aside, Joni is awesome – quirky, creative, intelligent and generally really fun to chat with while she works her hair magic. Pinup girl wallpaper, crushed velvet maroon couch and antique mirrors make this shop the perfect mix of coziness and sass-a personality-saturated NYC haven. I can’t say enough wonderful wonderful things about Joni, or the vibe at K&B. So thankful to have found such a gem!
