I pretty much agree with Anna H’s take on Shady Jakes. When it first opened, almost all the waitresses were foreign, so it was kind of funny being served by women in yee-haw garb who could hardly speak English. The food is very ordinary; good enough for people who don’t really know their BBQ. But the flavor and texture lacks the oomph and aahh of real Southern cookin’. They have a nice selection of BBQ sauces that may just strike your fancy. The menu is pretty funny: they have a combo called something like the«OHMYGOD» combo that comes with an overwhelming amount of food. Portions are generous, and the corn bread ain’t half bad.

Yet another BBQ place in the Chelsea/8th Ave area. Very self-consciously decorated to be as down-south-home-cooking-yee-haw as possible. The paper placemats in the shape of an adorable pig wearing a bandana were awesome, but not awesome enough to make the fries less soggy and the Po’Boy sandwich more tasty. The wings were yummy and the waiter was attentive, but I wouldn’t come here for a full-blown dinner again.
