I absolutely love the gym at NYP! I am so happy that it exists! It makes working out so convenient! The staff are so helpful and always smiling. They all know me by first name and it’s always such a pleasant part of my day to be greeted by them! They truly become friends. You can find everything here — clothes to work out, shampoo, conditioner, hair scrunchies, lotion, …they have thought of everything to make sure it’s convenient! There are free lockers to use during the time you’re at the gym, or for a very small fee you can rent out lockers monthly! There are group classes in the early morning, lunch hours, and evening. The classes are amazing. I love taking them and the teachers are so personable. The gym is not big but has all the essentials! I def recommend it to anyone serious about working out!

The employee fitness center is an oasis from the sea of stress that is New York Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University Medical Center. Hospital life is hard(really hard). It doesn’t matter if you’re in the ER or stuck in a Lab, if you work in a hospital you’re bound to get overly stressed once in a while. It’s not always best practice to drink away your frustrations and stress, believe me I’ve tried. So what are you left with for options? Well if you want to be healthy about it, my favorite option is the gym; and lucky for us, NYP has provided the perfect place to let the stress out. Tucked away in the service building of CUMC, is the gorgeous employee fitness center. When I first started working at this medical center, I had no clue that there was a gym here. To be fair it’s not overly advertised, which I find odd as the services they offer up are in NOWAY free. This gym is not the 10 dollar a month kind of place, not by a long shot. It costs a whopping 15 dollars a WEEK to be a member of this exclusive club. So what do you get for your right arm(apparently my right arm is worth 60 a month)? Well to start you get clothes to work out in, which I get sounds super gross, but comes in super handy. It sucks having to drag sweaty gym socks through the bowels of the subway system, It’s really no fun for any party involved(looking at you girl giving me the stink eye). As far as the equipment is concerned, nothing is overly old or overly worn out. I guess that’s one of the perks of paying so much a month, they keep the ellipticals up-to-date and in working order(most of the time). Also Included in your membership are group classes. I hear them going on from time to time, but the thought of making a fool of myself while doing some weird tae diggs esque class with people who may recognize me has kept me away so far. The final, and by far biggest perk of this place — hot showers. After you’ve take off those lovely shorts that other people have rubbed up on, you can rinse that feeling of shame off in nice, fully stocked(with shampoo and soap) showers. If you really hate working out(I hear you), they do offer a shower service for 5 dollars a month, which is actually a good deal. So in review(of a review): Clothes that other sweaty people have worn = gross, stress reduction + midday hot shower= happy. This place ends up being worth the price(Unless you work on an off-shift, as they close crazy early); it’s taken what otherwise would have been awful days here, and made them not so bad

Free two week trial period to start your quest toward health(which is what I’m currently using)! This gym can be found on the second floor of the services building, facing the courtyard. The gym is in a great spot for those who would like the chance to work out while at work. I am able to take 1hr to run then shower before finishing up my day. Staff are ridiculously friendly and encouraging. They provide not only towels but also gym tees, shorts, pants and unbelievably, socks(I still bring my own pair though!). They are not very soft but they are clean and really helpful since I don’t want to lug all my gym clothes to and from work. The lockers are free to use so grab one of those small white cards at the front desk. Once you open a locker, insert the card behind the lock in the red space. Only then can you lock and remove the key. Equipment seems in fine order and I’ve yet to see any machines down for maintenance. They aren’t the newest but they still get the job done and certainly will get the heart pumping. Just remember to use the wipes to clean up after you’re done. The locker room has a space for showering in the back. They provide shampoo, conditioner, body wash and lotion. There us also an area to dry hair as well but I know I won’t have time for that on just my lunch hour. Place all your clothes and towels in any of the bins for laundry located throughout the locker room. You can have the monthly fee deducted from your check or pay by card. First year is a full year contract so make use of the free two weeks to make sure you use it! Overall the gym seems like a great, albeit more expensive, option. If you weigh the pros(clean clothes, close to work, not exhausted because you traveled all the way home, friendly and clean) they certainly outweigh the slightly higher cost.
