What a revelation! I am no hyper meat eater and have secretly been squeamish around Nordic style seafood preparations. How wrong was I! Loved the smoked salmon and pickled coriander versions here. Melt in your mouth goodness of the sea, perfectly flavored via smoking and pickling. To be honest, I only tasted a couple of items in small quantities. Can’t wait to go back for a sandwich or assorted sampler. Authentic, reasonable and delish. Easy to miss as it’s INSIDE the Essex Market, which by the way is just across the Subway at Essex X Delancey Street. Go go go!

Delicious sandwiches, 10 bucks each which isn’t bad at all for how high quality the produce is. Had the«Lax rulle,» normally with Smoked Norwegian salmon, red cabbage slaw, and horseradish crème. However, I substituted smoked tuna for the salmon/lox. He said why not so it was allowed(the tuna is less money so why not anyway.) He had personally not tried the sandwich before with that fish but it was oh so delicious. Tuna was excellent .A good amount of fish, nice bite from the cabbage. The cream wasn’t too horseradishy but I guess it is actually good here as it allows you to taste the fish fully. As per their other sandwiches, it came with some lemon. Nice guy as well. Hope this place thrives.

This is quite literally my happy place. I cannot say enough good things about the food here, not merely because it is well priced for the quality, but because everything I’ve had here tastes rustic and homemade, as if it was literally prepared by your favorite Scandinavian aunt. There is no bullshit here– handwritten signs adorn all items with price written in ballpoint pen, where many mysterious goodies lay pickled or smoked, and a stuffed bear hovers above, guardian of all things fishy and fine. The stand is manned by one person who takes their time, and I couldn’t imagine it any other way. They run out of bread on busy days, but the fish plate is great too. Faves: The Nordic sandwich, smoked trout, deviled eggs, any of the rotating quiches, elderflower lemonade.

The sandwiches are really good, but the bread is really hard. We all had a sore jaw/scratched up the roof of our mouth after eating here. But we’d do it again.

Absolutely love this place. It has a pretty authentic down-to-earth atmosphere and the variety is amazing. Norwegian smoked salmon is seriously the best smoked salmon I’ve ever had. A bit pricey at about $ 34 a pound but definitely worth it. Meatballs are great and the baked curry potato is delicious.

Such a wonderful hidden gem! Located inside the Essex Street Market, this place offers some delicious Nordic sandwiches. Their smoked salmon was very smoky and their baguettes very crunchy. Even though the market itself wasn’t very busy, there was a small line at this place, which is always a good sign. There was only one person working, but everyone was very patient waiting for their yummy lunches.

I get the nova with sour cream, capers, on a pumpernickel bagel. Owner Lou is always friendly. The beet burgers are amazing. Definitely worth a try!

What a great find! Located in the Essex Market, Nordic Preserves Fish and Wildlife Company has outstanding food, and great character! I was walking by and intrigued… asked the person on line what she had ordered — said she was ordering the Nordic sandwich; her first time, but her friends at work raved about it. I did a spin around the market, came back and ordered the Nordic(and a yummy deviled egg with smoked salmon, to snack on while waiting). The sandwich was amazing! Beautiful, buttery nova, lump black caviar, dill, and I think crème fraîche, on a baguette(you have your choice of bread), and prepared with such care… $ 10 and it was the most delicious brunch, food treat, I’ve had in a long time! Thank you!

It’s quite depressing to see that Essex Street Market lacks the foot traffic necessary for places like Nordic Preserve to thrive as much as it should. If this joint was located elsewhere there’d be a line to the door daily. Their smoked salmon sandwich prepared with cabbage slaw and homemade horseradish cream on a fresh and crispy baguette is a delicious steal at $ 10.00. The meal was prepped delicately including the on-order whipping of the horseradish cream. I wish this place much success and will continue to patronize for my smoked salmon needs on the Lower East(yes just as good and far more affordable than R&D).

Awesome! I had no idea this place, or Essex Market, existed! I’ve only been once but I immediately fell in love. Though a one man show from a tiny little booth, there is quite a bit of variety! I had the gravlax sandwich and it was amazing. Possibly the best lox I’ve had in NYC and I eat a lot of nordic food and bagels. The salmon was buttery in flavor and drizzled with a lemon sauce, dill, and piled on top of a pickled mix all between a delicious little baguette. They also offered various sweets, and of course svenska köttbullar(swedish meatballs). Though this isn’t quite the replacement for the recently closed nordic deli in BK, it is a nice affordable alternative for those who want some nordic food but don’t want to shell out the cash for Skal, Aquavit, or aamanns. I will definitely be back and encourage everyone to go so we don’t loose this gem like the Nordic Deli…

This place is so great. I’ve come here many times, for a long time, to get meals to go — lunch and dinner. Their fish is so fresh and well paired with whatever they give you on the side. I’ve often gotten the herring platter and it’s awesome and a good amount of food. Today I got the popular Gravelax sandwich on their big wheat cracker-thingy cause I didn’t feel like having a lot of bread. It’s amazing, so tasty! Also, their staff has always been kind and thoughtful.

I am so glad that this place has opened in the essex market. No more waiting on line at Russ and Daughters for me. They seem to have the same selections of smoked salmon that russ’ s have. Norwegian, scottish, belly lox etc. but also smoked eel. tuna and other stuff russ doesn’t have. it’s Scandinavian and has licorices and other candy from the Nordic countries plus big rolls of crispbread, which I have not seen elsewhere. It’s a cute design with lots of pale wood and a giant reindeer head overlooking all. I had the nordic sandwich, which came on a ciabatta. Home cured graxlax with some kind of smetana or crème fresh. and a crunchy pico de gallo. The roosters beak, Delicious! However, that night I dreamt that a giant chicken was eating me.
