Stopped by during lunch time. Got a lunch combo which includes soup which isn’t bad for the price. Quick friendly service. Will probably stop back again for lunch!

After walking 49 blocks(was on 63rd and decided to walk to the Namaste Bookshop on 14th), my partner and I were super hungry so we grabbed some sushi. I haven’t had sushi in 6 years! But I told myself it was time to jump back to the dark side– I no longer was a faithful going on 5 years vegetarian. I got the California roll(s) and was in heaven. There’s this soup that stars with an ‘M’ and has itty bitty tofu chunks and seaweed in it. I wasn’t a fan of that soup, but the sushi I was a fan of. $ 5 for 6 rolls, the price for the stuffed belly I had was great. Our bill with two soups, two orders of rolls, two sodas came out to be $ 17! I did a happy dance in my seat. The customer service was decent, there’s always room to be better. The location is nice and on a busy block, but honestly what block isn’t busy in NYC?! Area inside is super clean, lights are dimmed– gives you that romantic feeling or the feeling of being in a Chinese mob and knives begin to fly over your head(I just finished watching a Kung fu film– forgive my imaginative thought). All playfulness aside, this place is inexpensive, great for dates/date nights, tasteful food, decent service, nice location– it’s great!

Absolutely awesome– great prices for the amount of fish per roll. Definitely awesome lunch special that’s available on weekends. Awesome spicy tuna, whitetail– love it all. The miso soup is also great. The cashier is also super friendly. Great place

As soon as you walk in, this place feels gloomy. As soon as you walk in you realize you made a mistake. But you ignore your instincts and roll the dice… When you receive your food .you regret it… There are no Japanese here… All chinese… Very bad food… Very bad quality…

I’ve been coming here for a long time. For whatever reason, it’s not so crowded when I usually go(usually around 7, usually during the week), and perhaps as a result, it’s usually nice and quiet. You can enjoy your food and stay for as long as you’d like. The wait staff are very friendly. The food is perhaps unremarkable, but it’s certainly good and the portion sizes — especially the salads, based on what I’ve tried — are large. Prices are extremely reasonable. I keep coming because I can take my time and the food and atmosphere are enjoyable.

Nice ambiance, small, neighborhood feel, but a little ‘14th Street’. Sushi and service is consistently good. Not great but affordable and comfortable.

So after 5 years of frequenting this place, it has probably earned a review. Sad to say that I can only give it three stars as the quality has really steadily declined over the years. Like any relationship, Mikado and I were hot and heavy but after a few late arrivals, some last minute cancellations with unbelievable explanations, and the discovery of other options(I couldn’t resist the reliably consistent noodle spot next door) it just was not going to go anywhere serious. I would frequent this place like metal to a magnet. With an $ 11 sushi lunch special, a fingerlicking shrimp fried rice and the occasional hibachi canoodling, life was good. They were quick and the drinks would flow. It was the lunch times and then it was the worst dinner times. The delivery and service times in-house eventually started getting longer(while the sushi got room temperature and the Hot food was lukewarm). And then I just could not deny that no matter how many times I politely and logically explained the issue – it was falling on deaf ears. The place would have remained a Star in my eyes if we had ended a few years sooner. Ah well. Our breakup was smooth, even if not painless– that last order was so disappointing. Maybe I shouldnt have forced the matter but I had to have you one last time. It sealed the deal and now we’re done. Try it but only because you dont know how good it used to be.

The sushi was pretty good. I’d go back if I was in the area. They have some interesting specialty rolls. I tried a tempura tuna roll with cream cheese and scallion. It was actually really good. It’s a decent place to eat if your in the area and the staff was pretty friendly.

Confused and Dazed Hibachi I visited Mikado because all other restaurants I originally went to were crowded and had wait times. Food: It is uncommon I am uninterested in sushi at a Japanese restaurant, but since the reviews told me to reconsider it, I decided to go with the steak and shrimp hibachi instead. I wasn’t impressed. The miso soup was your standard miso soup that you find at most Japanese restaurants. The salad itself was a joke. The lettuce was fresh, but the dressing had the consistency and flavor of water. I am uncertain if there wasn’t enough, or the dressing they put on my salad wasn’t properly mixed, but it lacked any distinct taste. The hibachi was a mixed bag of good and bad. The shrimp was well cooked, but over 50% of the steak was tough and had the texture of rubber. The sauce greatly compensated for the texture of the steak. It chased away the toughness and left behind a nice aftertaste of soy goodness. Surprisingly I must say the mushrooms were excellent. I normally avoid vegetables(fungi), but they did it right here. The rice was ok as well. Nothing much to say about it. The portion size is standard in comparison to lunch specials. Service: The service was all over the place on my Saturday afternoon visit. I was seated quickly and given a menu. The restaurant was a bit busier than one would expect at 300⁄315 in the afternoon, so I had to wait a few minutes longer than expected to order. I have to give them credit for keeping things in order despite the confusion. I was asked twice if I had ordered my drinks/food. I watched the other tables go through the same confusion in taking orders. However, the food came out correctly to each table and within a good time frame. Drinks: The hot sake burned so good! Overall: 2.5 Stars The positives and negatives of Mikado balance each other out While the shrimp, sauce and mushrooms of the hibachi was excellent, the steak was mostly tough and chewy. The salad and dressing lacked any flavor. Service seems a bit confused(maybe because of a lunch rush at 3pm) The lunch specials end at 4pm. If I don’t have other options I may come back for a visit.

Flavor would be nice. Oshitashi mushy. Tuna roll and salmon roll not fresh and little flavor. Shrimp tempura greasy. Soup bland.

Giving this place a 3.5! Came here for lunch and was greeted by staff. Immediate feeling of the restaurant was that it was quite warm and generally, I get cold easily so that’s a good thing for me but it was almost a bit overwhelming. Staff was attentive yet the food took a while to come out. I ordered the lunch special which included 2 rolls, miso soup, and salad for $ 9. Really not bad in terms of pricing! And, I did enjoy the soup(not too salty) but the salad was okay. The salad dressing was yummy but there really wasn’t much of it. It’s always nice to get a balanced coating of dressing on the salad and really, I didn’t see any carrots or anything of the like. It was just straight up lettuce. In terms of the rolls, I ordered the mushroom and avocado sushi which I really enjoyed. The mushroom flavor really stood out. I also ordered the salmon avocado roll. The salmon seemed fresh despite other reviews(though, totally worth it to give it a smell!). I thought both rolls were yummy but they were also generally smaller than rolls I’ve been served in the past. The reason why they are not getting any greater of a rating is because I found the place to be a bit dingy and not really on the clean side which is unfortunate particularly in a restaurant setting where our food is coming from! Specifically, the table top felt grimey, the sign on the table with the various sushi rolls was clearly dirty and needed to be wiped down, and my plate didn’t look the cleanest either. They need to amp up their dishwashing soap and attention to detail, if you ask me! It’s questionable whether I’d be back as there are other great sushi places in NYC.

Love this place for its delicious food. My favorite is the Yellow tail jalapeño from the appetizer. You gotta have the plum wine with your sushi. Not a stuffy place. Friendly staff. I go for the food, not the décor but its not a sore eye either. My favorite sushi place.

Brah, don’t eat there. Trust me, I know looks are deceiving, but don’t you do it! The quality of food was like this: Imagine taking a dirty shrimp from out of the water and making shrimp tempura rolls with it. The presentation can fool foodies like myself, and my gosh I felt like I tasted pure dirt.

Really nice small place with good food. Ambiance is nice and they have really good lunch specials. I had the salmon teriyaki bento box with spicy tuna roll and asked for spicy mayo, it was delicious. Great place

The server made a huge deal when I received my plate and was unhappy with the sweet soy sauce on top of my Shrimp Tempura rolls. She insisted that Shrimp Tempura rolls come with the sauce in EVERY sushi restaurant. I know this is untrue from my various sushi dining experiences. It took my insisting and 5 minutes for her to finally have the sushi bar remake my rolls. She was not happy and she made it very obvious. The food, once replaced, was very good and reasonably priced.

Nice staff, and some good sets, but I felt my fish was not fresh and even decided not to finish my sushi/sashimi set just because I worried I might end up ill from eating it(and I am no food waster). Also, salad was drowned in the ginger dressing; though tea refills were plentiful. Honestly would probably be a miss for me if ever given another opportunity.

Warning: I don’t eat fish. This isn’t really a «fair» review, not being a fish eater and all, but even with that being said, this is my go-to sushi lunch spot in the area. For $ 8.95 you get a miso soup, house salad and 2 rolls off of a pretty generous options list.(I think it’s $ 11.95 for 3 rolls.) Easily the best bang for your buck and I love that you get both soup and salad and don’t have to choose. Many call my order not«real» sushi, but I still love my veggie rolls from here. The sweet potato roll is my favorite, and it’s always perfectly crispy. I’ve also had the chicken teriyaki and bento box option which are also good deals for lunch. The service is so quick, lunch here can usually be done in a half hour, if you happen to be in a rush. The restaurant itself is pretty small, and they definitely do a lot of take-out, but there’s always a table open for lunch whether I come in alone or with 1 – 2 friends. I’ve brought quite a few people here, since it’s so cheap and my brother’s complaint was that the wasabi wasn’t nearly spicy enough. Considering I can handle a good amount of it, I’ll have to agree that it’s weak. Other than that, no complaints here!

Ordered take out from tapingo Arrived 15 minutes later and received my food. I ordered a beef teriyaki bento box! The lettuce was fresh(for the salad) and I loved the plentiful amount of ginger dressing they gave. The miso soup was a little too salty for my taste(did they add salt to the miso soup? miso is salty by itself, maybe they put too much miso paste?). The beef was overcooked and not tender at all; there was barely any teriyaki taste too. I had a hard time finishing it because it was really rough and rubbery to eat. The california rolls were delicious even though the rice kept falling apart. I have to say, though, that they were probably the best part of the meal along with the shumai. I will probably return to try another dish since beef teriyaki is usually a hit or miss. Maybe chicken will be better? Or I’ll try more of their rolls.
