OK this place is the bomb dot com. Here’s what you need to know… Food is great. I recommend the número uno which has prosciutto mozzarella arugula and balsamic –it’s soo delicious! Comes with chips Service is wonderful. Johny is the man! He always has a smile on his face. very welcoming and inviting atmosphere. Place /space is limited I wouldn’t plan to eat there unless you go before lunch rush hours. Limited seating. Def give this spot a go. Very authentic Italian ingredients and san Pellegrino’s stocked in a variety of flavors. Coffee is great too. Can’t beat it!

This will be a short review just because the panini sandwich speaks for itself. I never ever had a panini so good ever in my life. Jonny, God bless you. Your sandwiches and coffee are purely excellent. I came here on a whim and thank god I did. I got a #8 which consists of ham, mozzarella, lettuce, forgot what else and chimi spread. Jonny, good luck with your new endeavor. I will be dragging my wife here because she will be in awe of your food. Folks, try this place out. You will not be disappointed. Keep up the great work, you’ll be doing fine.

vegetarian-friendly menu Awesome, colorful décor Great service #18 grilled veggie panini w/chimichurri mayo Lots of different vegetables… I enjoyed mushrooms, tomato, zucchini, eggplant,(were there pickles … ?”) roasted red peppers, asparagus… onions. The veggies were cooked to perfection. Bread was crrunch, buttery, dense, chewy but light. very crisp flavors, but the chimichurri was creamy & spicy. Great mouthfeel and delicious flavors. Jonny & Tony were funny & delightful! The gentleman working making panini was awesome as well. Thank You Jonny’s Panini!!! I recommend to any and everyone!

Went here on a Monday afternoon after reading some good reviews about it on Unilocal.Apparently this place is pretty new – owner said about 3 weeks old. Nevertheless, this place is already clicking on all cylinders. For my sandwich I went with the #9 turkey panini which came with avocado and jalapeño aioli. This sandwich totally hit the spot. First off, the bread was so crisp and delicious and the sandwich was packed full of meat and avocado. To top it all off, the aioli was super tasty and all the flavors combined for a nice bite. With each sandwich you get a bag of chips – which I didn’t even need since the sandwich was so filling – and it only came out to around $ 10, so not a bad deal for lunch in HK. If you are looking for a quick bite to eat, definitely check this place out. The only downsides are the limited seating area and the overall cooking time – but it’s a made-to-order panini so it’s going to take a minute.

We were heading out of nyc and wanted to grab our final lunch– limited time but wanted something good and not a chain. Found this place on Unilocal. It’s an extremely small location with limited seating. We ordered 3 paninis and Johnny made them to perfection. Friendly staff, clean restaurant, walkable, and delicious food. We will definitely be coming back as we visit nyc often from DC.

Jonny’s is the best! Besides having amazing sandwiches and perfect espresso, Jonny is always good for a laugh and the staff is super friendly! His new location has more seating than before and looks great. You can tell that he only uses the best ingredients and cares about every sandwich that comes out. I can’t recommend this place enough!

Bottom line: one of the best paninis I’ve ever had. Additionally, Johnny is one of the more down to Earth, fun owners you will meet. I had the #4 – the Mortadella pork, sharp provolone and jalepeno mayo melted perfectly between a toasted panini bun. I ate there at 9am so I also ordered a double shot cappuccino which was great as Johnny’s original location began as a specialty coffee shop. Great food, great atmospheres, great service; what more is there to want? Overall experience: 4.8÷5

So is $ 9 or $ 10 reasonable for a sandwich? This place is about a block away from a Subway where you can get a larger sandwich for about half the price. The short answer is: Yes! These sandwiches are delicious. The care that goes into these creations is incredible too. They have a deli slicer out on the counter and are slicing the meats for each of the sandwiches as needed. There is no bucket of pre-cut meats drying in the fridge. And the care with which the cheese is melted prior to the panini being pressed, it is truly inspiring. This is not a simple sandwich shop, this guy is a sandwich chef d’cuisine! I got the #5 on my first visit and it was excellent, a little bite from the jalapeños and a very good balanced set of ingredients. Well done guys! I will be back and well worth the wait!

This is one of the best panini places I’ve been to in a while. I ordered the #9 and watched as the chef artfully and slowly prepared the panini. I could feel his heartfelt devotion to the food he prepared. It was a form of art for him. Hearing his blades cut into the panini I knew this would be one of the most delicious meals I’ve had. There was a special crunch to the crust and the turkey and avocado combined well to form a very flavorful bite. There was also a hint of spiceness in the sauce which added a nice kick. I also ordered the latte and it was certainly one of the best! Will be back to try others!

Wow!!! Now that is a great latte!!! Seriously, one of the best I have had in Manhattan. The space is small but the coffee and panini’s make up for it. Outstanding Panini’s, top notch and a variety to choose from. The staff is very, very friendly. The proprietor, who I would believe is Jonny, «Straightened Me Out» when I had the audacity to order a Café au lait. Too funny. I will never make that mistake again. Great place. I always patronize places like this when I can and avoid the enormo coffee shops as much as possible.

Look the owner is a very nice guy but the sandwhich is just ok for me. The bread was ok, i see he warmed up the sandwhich on something a little bigger than a George Foreman grill due to the place being a little bigger than a phone booth. I prefer the crispy panini at sergimo down the block. Also I got the prosciutto panini which had like one slice of meat. I can do without the free chips and rather have a little more meat. I had heard so much about the sandwiches but really it was just average for me at best. Not cheap either

Mocha latte made with nutella! omgosh it puts majority of mocha lattes in Manhattan to shame. Panini made with love, none of that poorly made ingredients slapped onto slices of carb. This is a place you visit knowing you must wait for your panini to be freshly prepared. However, he is quick on crafting lattes, coffee and espresso drinks. Meal serve with a side of humor, they are a silly crew– homey.

One of the best Panini’s in Manhattan! Small spot, friendly staff and great quality. I ordered the number 1 today and Johnny(i’m going to take a wild guess thats his name) constructed this sandwich with pure love. It was like watching an orchestra play; start with meat on the side, mix it in with the arugula, toast the sandwich with fresh mozzarella then it all came together for the finale when the sandwich was pressed. I just wanted to scream BRAVO and clap as hard as I could. Took a bite and WOW. The price, the quality, the quantity and the friendliness is what makes this place 5 star. Well deserved and cannot wait to come back!

This spot decided they wouldn’t close their presence and I was notified by the site(without an apology or even a call from the restaurant) AFTERARRIVING to the storefront with a ‘closed for private event’ sign. Shame, because I was looking forward to that Caprese Panini $ 10.00(Buffalo Mozzarella and tomato with basil pesto.)

Great Pannini, In beauty Manhattan where there is food everywhere we stopped at this little joint to eat. Cooks were very clean meaning they washed their hands and put on gloves before they made my sandwich, ya I was watching that. Price is on par with the area and I would definatly walk back in here next time i’m in the Big Apple. Props guys.

Love this little spot — the food is wonderful and the owner is just as nice as they come. Jonny’s is a hop, skip, and leap away from work, so I stop by once every couple of weeks. I’ve tried two panini so far — the prosciutto and mozzarella one(which is #1 on their menu) and the prosciutto and provolone(#2) and they were both delicious. They’re also pretty big servings, so both times I’ve eaten just half the sandwich for lunch and saved the other half for dinner. You also get a small bag of chips with your order! It’s a really small space(only two bar-style seats), so definitely plan to take your food to-go. It does take some time for the food to come out, so I’d expect that at peak lunch hours there might be a longer wait(I’ve only ever come around 2pm, and even then the wait is around 10 – 15 minutes). Just be prepared, but I think the food is totally worth it.

Stopped by for lunch today. I had the intentions of ordering #11: Turkey BLT but with chipotle mayo instead of jalapeño aioli. My mayo instead of aioli request was politely declined and I’m glad it was… the man has a vision for his sandwiches and the jalapeño aiolio perfectly complimented my sandwich and was not too spicy. I had to wait a few minutes for my order, but it was worth the wait. Cute little place.

I have a word for this place… YUM. The chicken, avocado panini was mind blowing; the jalepeno aoli was quite frankly genius. I really enjoyed my lunch and would love to come here again some other time. The service was also very good and the prices were very fair.

Okay, Jonny behind the counter is an extremely friendly guy who will strike a chat with you in his Italian accent. But that is no concession to charge 10 bucks for a decent panini sandwich. Don’t get me wrong, they taste pretty good but you can get it for half the price. It’s not like he is using exotic ingredients. But hey, its NYC.

I would say 5 stars would be pushing it a bit but there’s no denying this place is worth a visit if you’re in the area for lunch and don’t mind getting take out. The service is definitely 5 stars, the food and prices are 4 star worthy and the speed of service and space is 3 stars, 1 star for each person you can comfortably fit in the closet of a space that is Johnny’s. First of all if someone could explain to me why their awning, business cards, and shirts have a logo that says La Scarpetta above the actual name of the place«Johnny’s Panini» that would allow me to sleep at night. As I said Johnny’s is a take out place(though they do have 2 or 3 stools if you’re desperate) that pretty much only does pressed sandwiches and café beverages. There are 18 sandwich options ranging from about $ 10 – 13 but they don’t mind tweaking one if you want something different. Johnny was incredibly nice and he really takes a lot of care in crafting your panini and warming/pressing it to perfection, it was a thing of beauty to see him work. The portion of the sandwich was perfect, not a bomb sitting in your gut but not something where you’re still hungry after. They include a bag of Lays chips with the sandwich, I wish there was a higher quality chip included or if they asked if I wanted chips because I just ended up tossing them out. I also wish the prices were a dollar or two less but that’s nit picking. The chicken breast they use was hand cut to order but didn’t have any seasoning or real flavor to it and could have been a bit more tender. Aside from that the sandwich was great, especially with the pesto and the fresh mozerella I had them add to the #13. Because the space is so small they really can’t handle more than 1 drink order and 2 sandwich orders at a time so if you’re coming during a busy time expect a bit of a wait. One story that really exemplifies Johnny’s kindness is worth sharing. They have a ton of giant Nutella jars in the back so I asked what they were for because there was nothing on the menu that listed Nutella as an ingredient. Johnny mentioned that the Nutella Latte was a very big seller, he also mentioned they used to have a dessert menu with Nutella and strawberry or banana sandwiches(also mozerella and Nutella which he said was his favorite, that’s a combination I’m now dying to try). He said they didn’t sell much of them and he was wasting money(and fruit) by having it on the menu so they took it off. Johnny said that if someone wants to call in their order in advance that he’ll actually run across the street and buy fruit to still make the forgotten sandwiches. How can you beat that kind of service? You can’t, and that’s why the place is so highly reviewed.

Johnny’s place is tiny, but full of energy and style. Johnny himself is a master multitasker, making 3 – 4 paninis at once while taking the next orders and also making various awesome coffees. He uses an Italian machine that produces a nice crema on espresso doppios, from the stickers all around the place, he uses locally-sourced, fair-trade bean as well. His paninis were excellent as well, enough food for a pretty big eater like me, and with plenty of fresh and tasty toppings. Despite being crazy busy, Johnny has a smile on his face, and cracks jokes. To me, that suggests that he loves what he’s doing, and I, too, love what he’s doing, so I can’t think of a better world! One thing to keep in mind: there are only 2 small seats in the place, so don’t count on eating on site, instead go find a park or the waterfront.

La Scarpetta cannot compare to the hype of Blue Bottle, Bluestone, Ninth Street Espresso, etc. However, I find myself stopping by more often than not because of its prime location when heading over to Penn Station. That’s the sole reason I go to La Scarpetta– its location on 9th and 34th. Disclaimer– They share a storefront with a shoe cobbler. Consider yourself warned. It is a tiny, tiny, tiny coffee shop that should consider hiring magical elves to tidy up the place. There are Nutella & Go cups randomly scattered around the register. And one too many visible cords that reach out from every damn corner and counter. And their ‘open kitchen’ is worse for wear and makes me wonder how in the world they received the DoH A. Their lattes and cappuccinos are milkier than I’d like and even asking the ‘barista’, who(un)surprisingly isn’t a hippy-dippy bearded fellow in a flannel, doesn’t really help with the caffeine to milk ratio. They also steam the milk straight out of a milk carton, which means that the microfoam funnels into a cup via a plastic straw. It’s not too appetizing to see, along with its horrible, messy décor. But I’d rather this than waiting in line at a Starbucks next to grumpy early birds. There aren’t any tables either, just a bar stool that faces out their one window, straight into 9th Avenue with two bar stools shaped like bottle caps.
