Hong Lay Salon

This is my go to place! They remember me and every time I come I’m warmly greeted. I usually get my haircuts from Hong and it’s always on point. It’s exactly how I want it. The shampoo is awesome here, I felt like I was being pampered! (unlike some of the other places nearby, which basically wet my hair, add shampoo then rinsed off– all within a few minutes). I have actually brought two friends on separate ocassions with me because they wanted my haircut. I see a lot of loyal customers here and that’s always a good sign. The prices are more than fair and the quality is superb! The only downside is they’re cash only.

I’ve been getting my haircut from Hong my whole life and he has cut it perfectly every time. He cuts hair for my whole family and friends in the past. He is great at applying what you ask for and makes sure he delivers every time. Such a talented hair dresser and can cut hair in all styles and types. Wouldn’t trust my hair with anyone else.

I walked in one evening without appointment and decided to get highlights. Mr Hong and his assistant were accommodating and sat way beyond their closing time to finish my hair when it wasnt picking enough color. They did my highlights without adding bleach although I have dark hair to avoid damage. $ 40 for partial highlights wash and blowdry on my bob hair was v reasonable. The only reason I’m giving one star less is because the color came out brighter than I intended but it still looks nice and I just need time to get uSed to it. They did their best.

Mr. Hong is a master at his craft. I tend to present challenges to my stylists, I tend to go only when I can no longer see out of my scruffy brow. Mr. Hong and his team never judges me and always takes care of me, I always walk out feeling good and looking snazzy. They had moved locations a few years ago and I actually had to find them again by asking the locals what happened to the store front neat mott st.

Mr. Hong is quick, professional, friendly and speaks multiple languages.

HAIRCUT:
I went here today to get my first haircut in almost five months! My hair was a complete mess and I looked like witch. My friend’s cousin recommended that I go here and ask for Hwee. No appointments necessary, just that she’s off on Mondays.
When I went inside there were a lot of people. The room was a little bit crowded but a lady casually greeted me and asked me what I wanted done. Then she pointed out where to put my coat and motioned me over the shampoo area. The shampoo was AMAZING. I felt really relaxed lying back on the recliner while the girl was shampooing my hair.
Then she motioned me over to Hwee who was very friendly. She gave me a book of hairstyles and she was very patient while waiting for me to decide. Originally, I asked her for a side bangs and just trim the rest, but then I changed my mind and asked her to cut my hair shorter, and she was so nice about it. She then polished her work with a blow dry.
When I finally looked up the mirror, I was so amazed. I felt like the mere haircut was like a complete make over. She also offered to highlight my hair and other suggestions but I said no because I only brought enough cash for a haircut.
Price-​wise, I will definitely say worth the $ 30.
I am definitely going to be a regular client at this salon.
Cons: Salon’s not really clean and it’s small (it’s in Chinatown, what do you expect?) and it’s hard to make understand the staff because they still have a thick Chinese accent.

I have been going to Hong every month for the past 9 years. Hong is knowledgeable, listens to what you want done, and can execute. I have never left disappointed. His new location is a few blocks away but he has the same staff from his old spot. For the price and service, Hong Lay Salon cannot be beat!

This is the link to the Hong Lay Salon that moved from Bayard Street. I’ve been going to them for my hair cuts over 10 years. I came back from vacation once and they moved, I thought they closed down, until one day I found out that they moved. I like this salon because the stylists actually listen and cut your hair, the way you want it and not how the stylist wants it. For $ 22, cut and wash, it’s not a bad price. I definitely recommend this place to everyone.
