Unilocaled this place when I was Grand street. Had walked by before but did not stop in. The girl behind the counter recommended the Grandstand so I had it with a Snapple & Lays($ 10.51). There are small tables along the large windows at this corner store so sitting down & people watching is cool. The 70’s music is a plus for me. The neighborhood is a mix of Chinese, Puerto Rican & recently arrived young white folks. Some tourist too but don’t know why there are here. My Bialy place is half a block away so that helps. Wish the pickle man was still here. He was funny.

Delicious sandwiches, great variety. I had the ham Brie and cranberry on a seven grain roll. Delicious! Great price friendly staff. Doesn’t really have a restroom though, just the staff bathroom in the back. But they were nice enough to let us use it. A hidden gem.

I have a feeling that this place once had its charm back in the day… now however, it feels little more than the old worn out husk of a café stained by the passage of time. My partner and I were looking for breakfast and stumbled across this place. Had we read the Unilocal reviews before hand we would have felt fairly comfortable wandering in. From the outside it has a strange appeal which gave the illusion of warmth and comfort. On the inside it is different tale altogether. We were already ordering before we knew what we got ourselves into, and not to lose face we decided it would be politer to stay and endure the experience rather than running out like a pair of stuck-up snobs. We were on the hunt for some sweet bagels for our true NY experience. The bagels we ordered both had generous amounts of cream cheese which is always a big plus. We sat at a table which was adorned with napkins and a dead fly(maybe sleeping, I’m not a doctor). We were given our bagels and drinks. My hot chocolate was decent but nothing special and my partners lemonade came with bonus poppy seeds lingering at the bottom of the cup. I had a feeling had we ordered the soup of the day or a sandwich it might a been a different story. But the taste of onion mixed in with my cream cheese within raisin bagel was not the most enlightening experience in my café history. The service was okay. The head chef appeared to be death-staring somebody outside when we first entered which doesn’t make for great first impressions, our waitress seemed pleasant enough though.

I actually stumbled onto this place while I was wandering around looking for coffee. It’s a cute little place that is affordable and friendly. I got a latte and marble muffin, and the coffee was admittedly not that great compared to some other places, but it wasn’t bad either, and the muffin was amazing. Also, they can use soy milk instead of regular. I might go back for lunch. Their sandwich menu looked pretty good.

It’s just across the street from my old high school, though I always ignored it when I passed by. It’s a nice little place decorated in a colorful tone. Went here by myself. The food options here are sort of limited, but they seem to include various types. The prices are definitely worthy. I ordered the funky grilled chicken sandwich, its pretty good. Another thing to mention is the service here, which is really friendly. They are also willing to answer passersby questions about directions, etc.

I happened to walk by this coffee shop when I was in New York and I’m glad I did! It was a hot Saturday afternoon, and I got their iced coffee with caramel and skim milk. So refreshing. The staff here were super friendly too.

I think they might be closed for good. 5:30 pm on a Saturday and the door is locked and one of the gates is down. No sign saying«back in 20» or anything. You might want to call before going there. I remember the food and service being very good, so if it is still around, you might want to check it out.

Why haven’t I discovered this place sooner? My coworkers come here for coffee and sandwiches and give great compliments about this place. I came here for an iced drink. Got the Mango Green Tea and they were able to sweeten it for me. They were busy during the lunch hour so I had to wait five minutes. Their menu consist of breakfast(egg & bacon to LOX Special) and lunch items(sandwiches, salads, and soups). You can also create your own sandwich depending on what meat you want, cheese, condiments, and bread. Even vegetarian selections for you non-meat eaters! A little something for everyone! You bet I’ll come back to try the sandwiches sometime!

Consistency is key! I love that when I order a sandwich at the same place, it is exactly the same as I expect it to be. No surprises. The way it’s meant to be(or should be anyway). This place gets the same star rating as my home kitchen would get if I rated it, haha.

Lovely little place! Very friendly staff, great food & coffee, and old-school hippie theme. Not pretentious like the cafés nyc tends to house. Definitely coming back.

This place is not like other flower shops. I don’t mind the old school Brooklyn dudes and their NY attitudes. The flowers are always fresh and when I get my girlfriend an arrangement they last longer than other florists I have used. Flowers on Essex isn’t the cheapest but you can haggle with them. Not too much because they will beat you up. Because they’re old school Brooklyn dudes, so be nice. Especially to Mike.

Have been here twice in the past week — once for breakfast, and once for lunch. The food is slightly above average — I had the Barnyard sandwich and it was absolutely delicious, but my breakfast sandwich was just so-so — definitely something I could have made at home, but who cares. The man behind the counter was nice enough and the prices are fair. A great place to go when you want simple food for cheap.

I live around the corner and sometimes get coffee and bagels here, but I’m nonplussed about the poor service. The last time I ordered bagels, the cream cheese was almost non-existent. I ordered today and the cashier took the order of two punks who came in after me even though I was waiting in line like a proper human being. I won’t be going back again.

Not many places in the LES has the vibrant colors Flower Café has, so naturally it caught my eye and I went inside to look at the menu. The owner greeted us while we looked through the many fresh sandwich and salad options. He told us how cool New York was until the so-called natural phenomenon of gentrification took place. He’s a florist at heart, but felt a café like this was needed in the area. I had the Greek salad, which was yummy except for the fact that it was dressed with balsamic. No tahini dressing here, as is the typical way America makes this salad. I was kind of bummed, but the balsamic was good. Can’t remember what my professor ordered, but she enjoyed it so much and because of the large portion she had some to go. The prices are reasonable and it’s a comfy place to chill.

Only visit this place if: a) You have cash b) You want slow service c) You’re desperate for a caffeine fix I live in the LES. It’s not worth the annoyance.

So, I love this place… and I’m sad that all the reviews seem to be written by people who won’t step up and say something. It’s NY. Speak up or no one will hear you. That’s what I was brought up to do. I love the veggie friendly sandwiches. They always fill me up and satisfy my tastebuds. The coffee isn’t anything special, but its better than that overroasted crap you get at Starbucks. They also get fresh bread and bagels daily. And if your in a sweet mood, they have awesome homemade brownies. Oh, and this place does accept credit cards, but only on orders over $ 10. Quite honestly, using a card on a cup of coffee that is about $ 2 is really silly.

My one star reviews are very limited– because I believe in giving places the benefit of the doubt. And I also believe in supporting small business– and realize everyone doesn’t always have the perfect day. I share Elliott W’s sentiment exactly. I was entirely ignored. It was a quiet Friday morning. I already shot back from Roasting Plant espresso– so take into account that I already had my morning coffee. Infact– I was in a great mood when I walked in, this brisk, sunny December morning. The older manager looking fellow was busy helping a customer and the counter lady with glasses made full on eye contact with me. And stood there. I then assumed she was just waiting for the manager fellow to come back to take my order and direct it over to her(she was right at the bagel station). Nope! Another woman strolls into the shop and this counter lady smiles and starts making her«usual» sesame bagel. I was FLOORED. I don’t care if you’re a regular. You don’t cut the line– and as an employee you should treat my bagel order with JUST as much respect and care. Hag! I had been waiting several minutes, patiently. and flat out was IGNORED and even BYPASSED! The place alone looks like a nursing home. senior citizens taking naps over newspapers and coffees going cold. And a crappy chalk written menu that’s illegible. Despite this I live a block away and was excited to find a new«go to» café for delicious bagel sandwiches or an occasional muffin. Save yourself grief and go to Roasting Plant for your café or 88 Orchard around the corner. They deserve your business.
