I had this for a late post-yoga dinner yesterday, and it was exactly what I needed. The spot wasn’t too crowded at the time, but I’ve heard that it’s usually crowded. I had the vegetarian butternut squash and red peppers burrito with the jicama and corn salsa. The burrito was great. I have never had butternut squash in any type of Mexican food before, so it was definitely a pleasant surprise to get that cool sweet kick in every bite. The size was definitely worth the price at around $ 7.50.(Not Chipotle-level, but not all that much smaller) The tortilla was good; I didn’t feel too bloated afterwards. Every little bite was a treat, but I would recommend not putting any of the sauces on the burrito. It tended to drown out the butternut squash flavor, and I couldn’t find any sauces that enhanced the sweetness. The chips and salsa were great. I ordered a small, but got an ample helping of salsa and ginormous amount of chips. I was able to share it with 2 friends, and we also used it to sample the sauces. The salsa wasn’t too exciting though– I thought that it was kind of bland. Very happy with the value for money here; altogether my bill barely was above $ 10. There were also some Mexican beers on tap.

The tacos were OK. Actually, one makes for a really good snack. Opened late, fast service, cheap. Nothing fancy, but gave me fuel for some beer tasting in the area!

Great place for a quick bite and then some. Stumbled into this place one afternoon and saw a gigantic bowl of freshly cut avocados. That’s how you know you made the right choice. We ordered guacamole and chips, a five-spice ground beef taco, and a ginger butternut squash & spiced red bell pepper taco. How does that not sound out-of-this-world?! The guy scooped us some freshly made guac and chips and we sat there at the counter devouring it while watching him make the next huge batch of guac with his hands(gloved, of course). It was like inception. We sat there mesmerized as we watched him mush the avocados between his fingers, layer salt and pepper like it was chicken feed, squeeze two dozen lime halves and add whatever magic it was that made this thing taste the way it did. The tacos were scrumptious. They perfectly exemplified the word«umami.» Expect your tongue to be confused, but excited. Nothing was too salty like how a lot of small Mexican places prepare their tacos. Stop by here if you’re in the area looking for delicious quick cheap eats and free impromptu guacamole making shows.

I am not sure if I came here at the wrong night, or I am just used to better tacos. What I ate here was just OK. The tortillas were too crunchy, the beef was too liquid, and the chocked was OK. We came here based on Unilocal reviews, so maybe we expected too much. But this was Ok. Not bad, but I wouldn’t come from far.

I’ve discovered this gem last year and since then, this has been my go to taco place in East Village. The menu selection isn’t that extensive, which is a good thing since it’ll keep you focused on what matters the most– the taste. Pulled pork tacos and spicy chorizo were what I got recently, each taco is exploding with toppings as they do NOT skimp out on the contents inside the shell. The tacos are also soft shell tacos so I was very happy to dig in. Another notable thing about this place is that they concot their sauces to the point where it’s crazy addicting. Sauces like Habanero Jerk Chicken, Tequila Chipotle Mayo, etc, and my absolute favorite– Hickory Bourbon BBQ. I drown my tacos in that sauce with a little bit of Tequila Chipotle Mayo and it instantly makes the tacos taste even better. My favorite would be the pulled pork tacos, that’s because I’m not a fan of the chorizos. Their guacamole is also pretty good and they give generous servings for a small, paired with a huge amount of chips. All in all, these tacos are fresh, filling, and taste like heaven.

a well earned 4.5 stars from me. Five tacos is one of the best deals you’ll find in the city in terms of quality food, good serving sizes, and prices that cannot be beat. Let me put it this way, my fiancé and I stopped in here yesterday for our second visit after our first one about a year ago, and we were just as pleased this time around. Unilocal’s hours are actually incorrect as listed(they open at noon on sunday not 11 am). Naturally, we were the first customers once they did open and sat down at the counter and ordered 2 Flower Power IPAs and one taco each. We skipped the chips and black bean salad this time around and went right for the tacos. The amount of meat you get in these tacos is more than fair, and they’re less than $ 4 a piece. Our beers were $ 3.90 each. Yes, a good IPA for less than $ 4 as well. Grand total was $ 16 bucks for a very satisfying Mexican bite before we left to move onto our next food stop. The place is tiny and no frills, so do not expect anything fancy. Do expect delicious tacos made fresh to order. Also, make sure you top with some of their sauces. If you like really really spicy(like me) use the Devil Sauce, but beware it really is hot af.

Definitely a hidden gem in St. Marks. If you’re in the mood for some good mexican food I would recommend highly. Food is seasoned well and the guac is really good. The fact that they also sell beer is a much added plus, and the prices especially for being in Manhattan are superb. I paid close to 8 dollars for a burrito. Of course I got a Corona which ran me another 4 but well worth it. My only gripe is they have one beer on draft and it’s very unknown. Besides that I would highly recommend, especially to the 2 am drunk crowd.

Didn’t taste like really authentic Mexican tacos but it was good. I had the pulled chicken & added bar b q sauce to it. $ 3.75 each taco & they are legit taco size, so you’ll get your money’s worth

Brought my friend here because I fell in love with their guac n chips and tacos last year so I thought it’d be nice to introduce it. I ordered their medium size guac and chips and 3 tacos; pulled pork, pulled chicken, and spicy chorizo, and flower power draft beer. This is where everything went down hill. The guac was very salty and had too much lime juice in it and chips were not fresh as they were completely stale. You’d think it stop here. The pulled chicken tasted like tuna I swear. My friend said the same thing. Pulled pork was meh, didn’t have much porky flavor. The spicy chorizo wasn’t spicy and were chunky didn’t taste like chorizo that I know of. The only good thing that came out of Five Tacos was the beer… Overall I am really disappointed. Not sure what happened to this place but the most simple guac and chips turned out to be a complete fail. Sorry I’m not returning.

I came here because of the great reviews on Unilocal. This restaurant is in my hood, and I am always down to try a new taco spot. What makes this place fun is that there are(what seems like) dozens of different sauces and condiments you can load onto your meal. I opted for the ground beef bowl with my usual Chipotle-esque toppings. I tried the ground beef before I went at it with the sauce, and it was very over-salted. Unfortunately, this stopped me from enjoying my meal to the extent I had anticipated. It’s hard to take advantage of all those fun toppings when you are working with a dish that is already very over seasoned. Maybe it was that one batch? I’d like to go back and try a different protein so I can get my hands on that spicy coconut masala sauce.

5 tacos is a little hole in the wall Mexican restaurant in the east village. I had been craving a good street-style taco all day and quite enjoyed my meal. I got 3 tacos– 2 pulled pork and 1 butternut squash/red pepper veggie taco. They were soooo filling, especially the veggie taco. The sauces were nice too. They have a spicy jerk(yes, its actually spicy, I’m whats known as a chili head) as well as a coconut sauce. Both added something extra to my meal. I also had a pineapple soda to wash it all down. The only negatives I can give five 5 tacos are 1) its a small place so seating is limited, 2) they could expand their menu to offer more deliciousness. My overall experience was very positive and 5 tacos is WAY better than your typical Mexican joint.

A delicious option on St Marks Place, and very affordable. Came in on a late Sunday night, and there was steady traffic in and out. They have a nice bathroom if You need it. The pork burrito is filling and delicious for $ 7.35. Two of us split the Large Guacamole for $ 12 — it was a giant soup soup size portion, with chips. Delicious, a teeny bit spicy, and very fresh. Try their sauces! The coconut curry is different, but unique. The mayo is the best(a little like yum yum sauce). A wonderful little place, reasonably priced.

Tacos are really good and worth the money. Unlike Otto’s, the size of these tacos are good enough that two can fill you up. I got a beef and spicy chorizo, both are really good, but I’d definitely recommend the chorizo. *If you’re getting them to go, ask for a little container so you can pack some sauce too!

Five Tacos in East Village is by far the best Mexican restaurant I’ve had in NYC. I’ve tried numerous locations but haven’t been able to find any good ones, none as good as Chicago let alone Phoenix. But Five Tacos comes closer than the rest. Their guac has a bit more lime than I prefer but is good and they give you a large portion of you order a large side of chips and guac(though not enough chips imo). It’d be nice if they added onions to the guac as well. Their burritos are good as well, as they taste more authentic than Chipotle and is cheaper too.

This is seriously my favorite Mexican restaurant in NYC!!! I can’t even begin to explain. The food tastes like authentic Mexican food. I’ve been here three times and each time I was never dissapointed! I love the platos because you get a real taste of every ingredient. From the pico de gallo(which is AMAZING) to the guacamole, it’s delicious! I’ve tried the pork, chorizo and chicken. And honestly, every choice you make there is a great one because the toppings give so much flavor. The sauces!!! All of them add extra flavor that isn’t overwhelming, but a great addition to your meal. My personal favorites have to be the Hickory BBQ and the Tequila Chipotle Mayo. If you love Mexican food, you NEED to stop here.

Unilocal never fails me. Found this place using the Unilocal app. My friend and I were craving tacos after some yummy Yucca Bar drinks. We wanted something fresh, filling and authentic. This place popped up and we were all about it(plus it was around the corner). It’s a teeny tiny taco bar! So charming! We sat by the taco bar for tbe full experience and quickly became friends with our taco making buddies. The menu is charming and small like the restuarnat it self but it has everything you want. PLUS they have $ 3 plus change beer on tap. Only three beers to choose from but all you need is one! Ammmmiiiiright??? Okay for the tacos. The tacos were normal size. I say normal because they aren’t your gigantic American tacos but they aren’t your barely one bite taco either. I had three. Probably would have been okay with two. Guac is extra-what else is new? The sauces here really make it special. Not only do you hace your classic hot sauces but you also have a coconut one with Indian flavors and a sweet bbq to dress up those tacos. Really yum. I loved the whole experience of this place and will return soon to try more tacos!

O.M.G. Five tacos, where have you been all my life? You are everything I ever wanted in a taco: savory, delicious, fresh and oh so satisfying. After some drinks, I had the deciding factor of where we will have dinner and being you were 3 avenues away, you were worth the walk. We sat on the counter and fully absorbed ourselves into your casa. Placed our 2 taco order to the chef and he started working his magic. 5 mins later, two ground beef five spice appeared before us. I added rice and guacamole onto mine. Each additional topping was less than a dollar. Oh yes please! So good! And of course we had to order another round for good measures. The different sauces on the table is a must try. Wherever you are, you gotta come and try this place. I’m salivating just writing this.

Looking for the best taco experience in New York? Go to East Village, first visit some nice vintage stores and then treat yourself with a formidoble taco from Five Tacos. Why five? Well u can use from 5 different stuffings and taco material. We ordered a taco with pulled chicken and spicy chorizo. My boyfriend loves taco, he is a taco. He had the best time ever. No matter what I said, he was just enjoying his taco. I thought the spicy chorizo was quite spicy. I asked the guy behind the counter how bad it was. He said it was very mild. What was I thinking? Asking a Mexican if the taco is too spicy?! Any how, it was. Definitely love this place so please visit these guys!

*** 3.5 Stars *** I still like this place. But coming here recently on a Saturday night kinds of dampened the experience for me. 1) They were busy as heck and as such ordering and getting the food was well quite a wait. I could have sworn they almost ignored me for 15 minutes if I counted it on my watch or phone. 2) The service guys or rather the guy who makes the food seemed nicer the first time that I was here than the second time. I mean he was still cordial but I got a different vibe from him this time around. 3) He got my order wrong. The cashier or the second guy, not the guy who’s making the food, got my order wrong. I ordered the chicken burrito and the guy taking my order asked if I wanted guac on it. After I said nah I’m good, I could have sworn I got this distasteful kind of glance from him. Hey, I only guac on my chips. I wasn’t drunk I swear. Maybe… And yet, when my burrito came it was chorizo(sausage) instead of chicken. Luckily for me I gently split the burrito to check the filling. See, I told you that I wasn’t drunk. Upon, sending it back to them the same guy on the cashier, probably the helper again gave me this same kind of glance when I said no to guac. But the food was good. So I don’t know. After this experience I probably won’t make the trip to come here but if I’m around East Village or L.E.S… I don’t know. Semi-FAN.

After a few dranksss, we wandered around looking for this taco spot recommended by Anderson the navigator(lulz!). Best decision ever! Small taco joint located on the same block as the other late night muchie spot crif dogs. Sat down at the counter and went for ground beef and spicy chorizo taco followed by a quesdilla. DELICIOUS. Bout 5 – 6 different sauces(tequilla chipotle mayo, spicy coconut masala, etc) to squeeze on them makes for one helluva bite. Soda and beer are also sold here. Sorry late night yakitori, you just got demoted. Hasta luego.
