I am very sad to post that Five Star is gone, a victim of the E. 33rd St. between 5th and Madison Ave. real estate boom which has closed down several establishments on what was once upon a time a very good lunch-time street in lower midtown.

This is extremely solid NY style take-out chinese food. It isn’t the best chinese food I’ve ever had, but it probably is the best take-out chinese food I’ve ever had. The service was uncommonly good(they actually made a particular dish for me even though it isn’t normally on their menu). The price was a about average, perhaps even a little low for midtown. If you want a gourmet or authentic chinese dinner, don’t go here. If you want some of the best take-out chinese food that can be gotten, this is your place. Fast, friendly, well priced, good food

After pizza, Chinese food is probably the second favorite food staple of true New Yorkers. Unfortunately, it’s much easier to find horrible Chinese than it is to find horrible pizza. As far as fast, cheap Chinese food goes, Five Star Restaurant has a very fitting name. It doesn’t look like much: just your usual small place, not spotless but clean, not fancy but functional. The staff is very nice, especially the hostess. The food is tasty — and the servings are huge! There is a small lottery corner right inside the store, for those who are into that sort of thing. They’re also one of the quickest delivery places in the area, so if you’re working within 5 or so blocks and suddenly realize that you’re starving, they’re a good place to call.
