I came here after looking for a sushi restaurant that slightly differed from the usual UES choices. Fatty Fish didn’t disappoint! While they have your basic sushi menu, they also have more«out of the box» options to choose from. We ordered truffle tempura, sushi pizza(amazing!), and two basic hand rolls. All were delicious. With all of the restaurant options in NYC, I rarely like to try places more than once, but I would definitely come back here again to try some of their sandwiches, as well as what the table next to us was eating(something out of a carved out pineapple?!). I also had no idea that this restaurant was BYOB until after our meal… total game changer!

Fatty Fish is synonymous with fine casual dining. Outstandingly fresh sushi, eclectic assortment of menu offerings, innovative dessert plates. First BYOB corkage-free policy. Professional and welcoming staff. Go now and go often!

I would never miss dining at Fatty Fish everytime we go to NYC, we call this our favorite«celebration» place. The food is always good from the appetizers to the entrees and desserts, there is a wide variety to choose from, Asian fusion dishes at it’s finest! Plumtori Chicken and Portobello Tempura are my favorites, need I say their Sushi and Sashimi Deluxe dinner for two which we had for my husband’s birthday, it’s all fresh, paired with a pitcher of Sangria, it was so good! I would never get tirednof going back to this restaurant, it’s worth the drive

We could not even swallow the spicy tuna roll and rainbow roll that we ordered. The meal was not fresh tasting at all. Used to be great, Went down hill big time! Shame. The bowl they delivered the soup in was dirty.

Came a couple times with colleagues. The menu entrees are fusions of different cultures. I had a poboy sandwich-huge. Truffle soup is good. Its actually not so bad and prices are good.

Came here for dinner last Saturday with my girlfriend. Place has good reviews but was oddly empty. She’s said she’s been there a couple of times before and it’s always like that. I think they have a pretty busy delivery service though. The décor is nice, we sat in the back«garden.» Which is covered & cooled so despite the heat we were pretty comfortable. The waiters are nice, service is quick. The place is byob &1st bottle has no corking fee which is awesome. Food: –sushi pizza: I liked the topping, a bit much on the seaweed salad. The only thing I didn’t like was the«crust». It was soggy & cold, kind of tasted like it’s been sitting out for a bit –New York roll: tuna inside with scallop on the outside. All the fish was really fresh and melded together well. The sauces weren’t overpowering and let the natural taste of the fish go through. –salmon belly sushi: really tender and buttery. Nice light flavor –red snapper: not too chewy, another great piece. The food here is good but it’s pretty pricy. It’s $ 16+ for a specialty roll but if you get the simple rolls the price wasn’t too bad. I’d say this is a good place for a quiet date night.

I think I would like to give Fatty Fish another chance. I only had one dish here, and it was alright. Fatty Fish is dimly lit– good for a romantic dinner. It was relatively empty on a Sunday night. Not much to complain about regarding the service– it was quick and painless. I ordered the Gong Gong noodles(seafood yaki-udon, basically). The amount of seafood in the noodles was quite impressive– definitely bang for my buck. It wasn’t super fresh though, and I’m definitely docking a star for that. It wasn’t terrible seafood, just not what I would consider«good» seafood. But the udon itself was tasty. I’ve read a lot of complaints about their sushi, and I’m curious to experience it for myself, so I will be back to try the sushi and give Fatty Fish another review.

Fatty Fish is my go to place if I want great value for my money, and a foodie treat! Been living in the neighborhood for a while now, and I’m happy to have this find just walking distance from my apartment. I have celebrated special occasions, and brought friends and family here, and it has never failed to delight our tastebuds! A staple on my visits are: PANSEAREDEDAMAME, CALAMANSIMOJITO BRANZINO A big plus is the great service I always get, and the garden seating!

The WORST sushi I’ve ever had. And that was prior to us feeling sick after the first few bites! Restaurant was empty at 8:30 on a Saturday and now I know why. We had edamame which was good but the sushi was 100% inedible. Couldn’t agree more with the reviewer below about the«threesome» roll — the worst of the worst. All of it was warm(even the raw rolls) and you could tell the fish had been sitting out. Makes my stomach turn just thinking about it! We stopped after having a few bites and realizing how terribly un-fresh it was. Scarily, the waitstaff acted like this happened all the time and kept apologizing as if they knew how low the quality was! And the manager would only refund us for the spicy tuna and salmon rolls which even he had to admit we’re warm once he felt them. We left a huge uneaten plate of sushi behind and memories of the worst dining experience to date in NYC. If you go to fatty fish, make sure you lower your expectations and bring Pepto. Sadly, this place seems like it used to be great but the quality/cost cutting has ruined what was once a 4-star restaurant.

Nearly 300 reviews at 4-stars and I sadly need to slap Fatty Fish with a less than subpar 2. I only ordered a Spicy Threesome, but it was enough to say I won’t ever patronize this place again. Firstly, 6 pieces, regardless of how high the fish is piled, should not cost $ 16.00. At the minimum a special roll should be 8 pieces unless it’s holding some high cost fish like uni, or perhaps something seasonal. BUT all of that aside the reason why I was so disappointed was because the fish was inedible. All three fish present were not at all fresh. So sad considering all of their funky special roll combinations have such potential…

Eh… I wouldn’t come here again. Average at best. More of a 2.5 for me but due to the nice environment, nice presentation of food and good service, I’ll bump it to a 3. But food and prices did not cut it. Most dishes I ate lacked flavor. Please don’t get the sushi or sashimi. No flavor. You’d be better off with hot dishes. Appetizers: Shishito Peppers($ 7), salmon Skin Salad($ 7). Both okay. Peppers needed more salt. Salmon skin salad needed more sauce. Sushi: Mango Summer Maki Roll($ 16), Dragon roll($ 12), Spider roll($ 12), New Yorker roll($ 16). All the rolls looked good but flavorless. #basic Sashimi: Sashimi dinner($ 25) and Uni sashimi($ 8). Assorted 16 pc sashimi was alright. Uni was really fishy… It smelled like durian. The rice that came with the sashimi dinner was not sushi rice. Hot entrees: Green curry jumbo shrimp & vegetables($ 25) — this was probably the best thing I had here. Decent curry and huge shrimp. Kobe beef burger($ 16) — not bad, tasted like a regular burger. Fries were soggy. Pineapple Fried Jasmine Rice($ 12) — not at all like how other Thai restaurants have it. Way too much veggies going on and the rice was meh.

I think this place gets lots of tourists from the hotel(bentley) down the block… I am a native New Yorker. Have lived in this hood for years. Lets talk… Nice looking restaurant with indoor and garden. Waiters push you to choose the most expensive saki and beers on the list. It is average sushi. I have had amazing sushi in nyc(west coast sushi is w a y better but nyc does have some good places and you can spend the same $$ and get better). And this was not it. My bf thinks they gave us sushi/sashimi for one instead if 2. I agree. There was one piece of each type nigiri,. 2 people eating, there should be 2 of each. Sushi/sashimi delux for 2 $ 70! Expensive for average sushi. We ended up going to ‘Roy’s fish market’ on 1st ave for more takeout sushi… I had the salmon burger for takeout once and it was greasy and gross.

I came here with my friend and her mom and it was absolutely delicious! I didn’t find it «fatty» at all! Portions were perfect and presentation was great as well! The edamame was hands down the best I’ve ever had! I got the(Vegetarian) Teriyaki Bento Box which consists of brown rice, a vegetable spring roll, and a cucumber roll along with the meat of your choice. I am not a vegetarian but I wanted the rolls! So I got the chicken as my side and I was pleasantly full and 100% satisfied! Food aside, the prices were extremely reasonable. For the lunch special it was between $ 7 – 11 per person and for the meals on the brunch list or things containing fish it was a little more. My friend and her mother both loved their dishes as well! Attentive service, small yet comfortable space, and a fabulous menu. I will most definitely be going back for more!

TL;DR Great Japanese food with a twist at an affordable restaurant on the UES! I came across Fatty Fish when my friend and I wanted both sushi and Chinese food and saw that Fatty Fish had much more than just a traditional sushi menu. This restaurant, located between 1st and York, was a cute little joint with an attentive staff that never left my water glass empty. My favorite part about this place was that they had a brunch menu. I mean, brunch at a Japanese joint? It was too good to be true. A lot of their brunch meals come with homemade biscuits, which are incredibly flaky and buttery and a must-try(which I know sounds bizarre at a Japanese restaurant). Everything here had its own little twist. Even the edamame appetizer was spruced up with sesame seeds and an oil of sorts. This menu had anything you could want and at reasonable prices– I ended up deciding between the truffle omelette and the honey glazed salmon, both of which I’m sure I would’ve been perfectly happy with. I want to come here again and try so many dishes. The salmon burger with sweet potato fries looked especially good, but I can say with certainty: say YES to the brunch menu at Fatty Fish.

The drinks and sushi here are top notch! The fish is fresh and ever so tasty! Also I think its fairly priced, I am honestly surprised its not busier… So far this is one of my favorite sushi places Service was fast and friendly, the chiefs greeted you at the door and always said goodnight Try coconut knockout– its perfect. My friends also ordered other drinks and they were all fantastic. I would highly recommend!

Came here during my break from work. While I did really like the décor since it seems very tranquil and peaceful and the service was very nice, I was not a fan of the price and the taste of the food. I got the Sushi sandwich for $ 16 which I found absolutely ridiculous. There is no way that four rice balls filled with a very thin piece of eel should cost this much. I have to admit, the first few bites were very delicious and I thought the sauce complimented the sushi sandwich very well. But after eating more of it, it just leaves a very nasty/fish after-taste which I did not like. While the fact that this place is located in the UES might explain why the prices are so insanely high, I know I won’t come back and get ripped off again.

East meets West. Say hello to brunch. Eggs benedict on an English muffin? No, more like eggs benedict on kimchi pancakes. Want to eat a breakfast burrito? Try the sushi burrito. I decided to had the sushi bento box, which came with a cocktail, your choice of coffee or tea, and a biscuit. The food was delicious. Never had sushi for breakfast? Just do it, yolo. My friend’s sushi burrito was huge, like the size of a chipotle burrito. I saw someone eating a burger next to me and it looked amazing. The only thing I didn’t like was my bloody mary, I saw the lady making it out of bloody mary mix and it didn’t taste fresh. The portion sizes of the drinks were generous though. If you order tea, you get a whole pot of tea. Will I be back? Yes. Fatty fish you rock! I’ll be back for some noms noms noms.

Have you ever marveled at how someone so ordinary can become so beautiful? This isn’t where we met but it t’was where we first met alone. Fond memories. Well… my memory betrays me. We came for the burgers; I vaguely remember it as juicy, the pour down your mouth sort of juicy. The calamari didn’t leave any real impression, other than the fact that I remember eating it. Although, It might be unfair for the calamari, my attention was focused on something more elegant. The pineapple fried rice came in a pineapple. How exquisite? Hmm… rhetorical questions don’t seem to translate very well in reviews.

I had a solid meal at Fatty Fish, but nothing stood out. I was shocked to walk out of here and see that it was Michelin rated. I ordered the $ 11 teriyaki chicken bento box, and my boyfriend got the $ 12 salmon. The prices were reasonable, but I wasn’t fully full — but then again, I’m usually not after I eat Japanese food. I was disappointed to find the chicken was flavorless since it hadn’t been marinated in the teriyaki sauce. I did it myself, and it tasted much better and almost made up for the dryness on the inside. I love that they give you California rolls with the bento box though! You don’t see that everywhere. The service was polite enough, though rather hands-off, as Asian restaurants can often be. It was just off-putting because we were literally the only people in the restaurant. Then again, my boyfriend eats slowly, so they were probably also letting him finish instead of asking whether everything was okay… The décor didn’t stand out too much. There’s quite a bit of seating with a sushi bar near the door. There was a lot of early 1980s/90s throwback music, which I enjoyed. An Alvin and the Chipmunks song came on, which was a little startling though haha.

So far okay. My first choice was the cod po boy special for the day but it had an ammonia taste on the first bite. I had to return it. The Waiter gave me a puzzled look of disbelief. I then ordered the Asian Paella instead — which saved my day! The rice is pretty good — I wish I had more than 3 clams though like the next table. Maybe I’ll try this place again and see if my experience improves.
