ENT New York: Vandana Kumra, MD

I would not recommend this doctor if you are having any sort of hearing related issue. My main gripes are the following. Her beside manner was horrible and in my opinion, she wasn’t thorough with her recommended treatment. I visited Dr. Kumra because I woke up one morning and couldn’t hear out of my right ear. She did a full series sinus related tests and deduced that I might have Sensorineural hearing loss and recommended that I go see an Audiologist right away to confirm. This was confirmed later that day. This news was really scary and it didn’t help that her tone was curt and cold during the entire visit. Long story-​short, she recommended that I take Prednisone for 30 days and told me that my hearing may or may not come back and that there is not much known about Sudden Hearing Loss and it could have been caused by a virus but would be impossible to know for sure and that the only type of treatment is steroids, via oral Prednisone. After taking the Prednisone, my hearing improved on the 2^nd and 3^rd day, but got worse than the day it started on the 4^th day and continued to remain that way for days. When I called the doctor to tell her that I was concerned, she told me «not to overthink it and stay on the Prednisone for 30 days and we’ll go from there.» It was then that I decided to get a second opinion and saw a specialist (Neurotology), Dr. Daniel Jethanamest, who I hightly recommend, by the way. He right away recommneded that I get a series of Predniosone shots in my ear, as well as get blood work and an MRI done to rule any «related» Auto Immune Diseases or a possible brain tumor. Dr. Kumra never mentioned that there were other related illness that «could» be the cause of my hearing loss (Auto-​Immune Disorder or an Acoustic Neuroma, which is a form of a brain tumor). Bottom line is the MRI (brain) shows a cloudy mass and had I not gotten a 2^nd opinion, I would have never had found this out. I am currently in the process of setting up an appt with a Neurologist in order to see if the image on the MRI is something to be concerned about. Also, the Doctor NEVER called me after my initial appointment to follow up and see how I was doing. Not even once.

Dr. Kumra was very professional and knowledgeable. I’ve had some doctors who didn’t pay much attention when I was speaking about my symptoms, but she was attentive and listened to me very carefully. I was able to see her on the same day and got all my meds quickly. The receptionist and staff were very friendly and efficient. I would definitely go back when I need an ENT doctor in the future.

I was able to see Dr. Kumra the same day. The front desk staff are very nice as well as efficient. Dr. Kumra is very professional and attentive!

I have seen her twice. Shes great. No wait time, prompt, very sweet, intelligent and lovely.

If you’re looking for an ENT, this is the one to see. Wonderful, patient staff. Excellent listener for a physician. Great, calming manner.
