Great local Family owned Latin American Restaurant. The food always smells so good. I ordered the Cubano sandwich($ 5.50) and it was really good. The place is clean and staff very friendly. The only thing I noticed that bothered me was a sign on the register for credit card usage was $ 20.00 minimum. I have never seen a minimum that high ever. So bring cash of its just you.

Lets put it this way, they have the best tasting lowest priced Cubanos around and the plantanos are always cooked to perfection. The majority of the food is very inexpensive but excellent service. Talking about Cubano(Cuban Sandwich), they stuff it with a generous amount of pork that you can literally save ¾ of it mix it with rice or noodles and it’ll be dinner for 2 at home. It is grilled to perfection with enough Mayo to make the sandwich mouth watering. It beats all the other Cubanos I’ve every had except for an actual Cuban Cigar. This place is very authentic in Dominican taste just like the way my neighbors used to make it. I’ve brought 5 friends here and came numerous times.

I remember when this restaurant open the food is mediocre its a if you’re in the neighborhood take a shot, the nite manager who I thought I was cool wirh flat out refused to give me a taste of the Octopus salad dang are they struggling where they can afford too give a customer a sample of there product, his rational was he just made it, if there was something left over he would let me taste test the salad, why would I want too taste something that’s about to be dumped in the trash coo coo, I told him he will never see me in this joint again, I’m being generous giving them a star.

Much better than expected. Food was delicious and very inexpensive. I got the chicken sandwich with cheese and it reminded me of café Habana’s sandwiches. Totally worth a try for a quick cheap and filling bite.

I believe everything from this place taste great! I’m the type of person that love trying different dish and every single dish I get from here is full of flavor unlike other restaurant down here. If I had to choose btw any restaurant down here I would choose this as number one. All of the spanish restaurants don’t have any flavor. This place is the bomb and very homey. My fave fave from here is the Cuban sandwich! Give this place a shot I beat it wouldn’t let you down.

From the outside, it’s not the most inviting spot but I used to come here with er, let’s just call him a mistake. Anyway I was addicted to their cuban sandwiches of all things. Wrapped in foil and usually squished, it definitely wasn’t the prettiest but it was ALWAYS delicious. No weird dry bits of meat and never skimped on pickles :)

My hubby was craving Cuban sandwich, so we’ve decided to order out from El Castillo. It was my first time eating from here, even though I live in the neighborhood. I ordered tostones and grilled steak. My hubby got the Cuban sandwich and beef stew. The tostones were awesome! They were not greasy and that is a big plus from me. The grilled steak came with rice and beans. There was even rice to feed three adults. My mother in law, hubby and I shared one plate of rice, and we still had left overs! The beef stew was tasty. My hubby said the Cuban sandwich tasted good. The meat was not dry. HOWEVER, the grilled steak was a huge disappointment. Either the chef pounded the hell out of the meat, or they pressed way too hard on the grill. The steak was dry and tasted like big slice of beef jerky. It was not seasoned and just blah. 3 stars for cheap and decent meal, but crappy steak!

This place loves giving way too much rice for one person to eat. I’d prefer if they gave half the rice and a few more beans. The food is good and cheap.

I’m a sucker for saucy, stewed meats served with rice, which is what I usually think of when it comes to Dominican food. So, when I’m in the mood for it, I’ll usually drop by here since it’s close to home. As with most Dominican places, you come here for meat with rice and beans. I’m sure I’ve ordered most of the stews here, including the rabo guisado(oxtail), pollo guisado(chicken) or carne guisado(beef). You can also get all sorts of other meaty offerings like pernil(roasted pork), chuletas(pork chops), chicarron de pollo(fried chicken chunks) or bistec empanizado(breaded steak), but I stick with the stews. Why? Because I like mixing all the saucy goodness of the stews into my rice! YUM! Added bonus, they added arroz con gandules(rice with pigeon peas) to their menu. I used to ask them if they had that and they said that they don’t make it. I think they might’ve added it after their renovation. I’d like to think that I had a hand in getting that added to their rice choices. They were probably wondering how this Asian chick even knew about arroz con gandules! hahhah Anyhoo, I sometimes find their stews to be a bit too greasy. You’ll notice little pools of oil in the stew. I’m guessing that’s mostly from the meats themselves, likely from the skin on the chicken or the untrimmed pieces of oxtail. Because of that, I limit how often I come here. It’s really on the rare occasion and a treat. I’ve also tried some of their sandwiches — the Cuban is decent, but the pernil is a bit too dry for my tastes. I once tried their spaghetti with chicken and the pasta was waaaaaay overcooked, even though it had good flavor. A favorite in our house is the pollo asopao(chicken soupy rice). It’s kind of like a chicken gumbo or maybe even a soupy version of arroz con pollo. It’s fragrant and comforting — chock full of chicken and rice — love the olives thrown into it too. Although there are plenty of tables, I’ve never dined in. and, I’d have to say that the main reason is the waitstaff. Those waitresses have never so much as cracked a smile when I’ve come in to get takeout. I also hate the discrepancy in pricing at times. I understand the $ 0.25 charge for the packaging when you take your food to go(it’s stated on the menu), but I feel like they would always charge me $ 1 more. Also, there was one point when I first discovered the asopao and I’d order it at least once a week. And every single week, the price would fluctuate — one week it’ would be $ 6, then the next it’d be $ 7, then $ 6 again, then $ 10. Really?! Hmmph! That actually pushed me to just learn how to make it at home myself. So now, I go maybe once every 4 months when I’m in the mood for a stew — I’m too lazy to make that AND cook rice at home myself. And I’ll only get the asopao when I’m too lazy to get the ingredients AND have a serious craving.

It took awhile for me to finally try this place and I think I have been missing out. For me, El Castillo de Madison might just be the closest restaurant to my house and while I’ve always wanted to go in, I’ve always been a tad intimidated by the language barrier. A recent trip to El Castillo de Jagua steeled my nerves and I walked in for lunch. After requesting a menu, I figured out that they serve a lunch special similar to Jagua and one of the options was oxtail. Rice, beans and meat for $ 6. Hard to beat that!(I wonder why they charged me $ 7 for takeout, though…) Anyhow, the food was good — not life changing but if you need your rice and beans fix, there’s nothing wrong with what they serve here. I enjoyed it as much as any order I’ve had including Café Margon and the aforementioned de Jagua. There were only 3 pieces of oxtail and two of them were very average but one piece — fatty — was quite heavenly. I was completely stuffed and being that they are a close walk by, they’ve earned my business. You can definitely do worse if you are in the area so give it a try. I’ll also be back to try some of the other things on the menu.

I’ve been going here for years, it’s not my favorite Dominican restaurant, but it’s pretty good. I heard they changed the chef recently and I went back, the food was actually a lot better than usual. I do recommend it. I’ve heard stories of it not being a very clean place, but they renovated about two years ago and I personally have never seen anything gross in there. The waitresses aren’t very friendly though, they’re all business. So don’t expect lovely service.

I use to go on site viits on Fridays around this area so I would visit this place for lunch. I normally order the lunch special, oxtail stew with yellow rice, beans and salad. Also, try their coffee, latin style… I find it better than DD’s coffee… I would like to go back, but too lazy to travel there just for the food… d= p
