Overpriced and just ok. If it is closed, you’re not missing much.

This is my favorite Indian restaurant in NYC, not sure if it is closed now or not, haven’t been in awhile. I hope it re-opens if it is closed. Their lambchops were the best I’ve ever had and their desserts were fabulous.

Good ambience. Good food quality. Good service.but we were not blown away considering the price range. we will recommend it to others but won’t go ourselves again, unless of course someone is taking us there :)

Worst customer service. They called 10 min before our reservation time to tell us that they couldn’t accommodate us and we shouldn’t bother showing up. We’re in a cab and 2 min away from the restaurant. Nowhere else have I seen such a low grade customer service. If it was possible, I would give them zero star rating. In my past experience, service is slow, and items are slightly over priced for the quality. There are so many better Indian restaurants around with much better food and they actually care about their customers. You are better off going to any of those.

Ok, I was not blown away. This was more of a touristy Indian food spot in Union Square. Although the shrimp appetizer was delicious, I wasn’t impressed with very much of the rest which was just average. Also– the service wasn’t that great. They were a bit understaffed for a Friday night and I felt we always had to get the waiters attention. If you are desperate for Indian food in the area– then ok. But if you have patience to find someplace else– also probably good idea, as it is also kind of over priced.

…well Devi is not at all a DEVI, it ends with the name!!! I went there with a date(9⁄2014) and apart from the drinks it was a disaster! …I am from south east asia and know most of the ETHNIC dishes but this was a compete dissapointment! …my gf thought I cook better than this place! Enough said! …I am honest, I love south east asian food(i grew up on it) but be authentic as its ethnic food, with the charges you have– you do not have to act like Bukhara Grill mixing Pakistani/NorthIndian food with the South indian…

Word has it that Devi is past its prime. A former Michelin star restaurant, Devi was the hippest Indian restaurant in the city, for a significant length of time. However, the management seems to have failed to keep up with other options such as Junoon, and is doing little to stay fresh and new. The space is impressive. And the staff is generally quite friendly and accommodating. The menu is innovative in places – it is not often that you would find jackfruit biryani or masala roasted beets in an Indian menu. Their weekend brunch is a great value at $ 18. And their daily lunch special is priced competitively at $ 20, and includes an appetizer and entrée that you can pick from a long list of options. Dinner at Devi is classic North Indian fare. There are no standout dishes, at least from the ones I have tried. I have fond memories of going to Devi in years gone by, and wish they are able to rekindle people’s interest in visiting. It is time for a «devine» intervention.

So, my first experience here wasn’t my best… But my second experience here was MUCH better. I was very satisfied with how things went for dinner. My family and I went here during New Year’s Eve. At first I was skeptical because of the first time, but I still decided to go with it. There were some complications at first with the reservations we made. The table we had was on the second floor, but unfortunately there was a draft coming through and it was too cold to be seated there. When we explained this to the staff, they were very helpful and even though it took some time to get a new table, they seated us in a much better area that was a bit more intimate, and it was the perfect spot. The waiter we had was also the sweetest person ever. Since my mom has many dietary restrictions(basically an almost-vegan diet) it was difficult for her to order something from the special prix fixe menu they had for NYE. When we explained this to our waiter, he specially went and got us a regular menu even though they were not making anything from that menu, just so my mom can get something that fits her palette. I found this to be a very kind gesture, and we appreciated it a lot. The food also was simply exquisite. I HIGHLY recommend the lamb chops… amazing. But honestly, almost every single food on the menu was just delicious. And I know I complained about the portions before, but I think they have made the portions larger from the last time I came here.haha. Either way the food was delicious. Oh and the desserts are amazing. Just try all of them. And to top it all off, Devi gave us complementary champagne for my family, and to everyone else eating there as well, for New Year’s. how sweet is that?! I’m very glad we picked this restaurant out for such a special day. I hope to come back here again very soon. :)

This is arguably my favorite restaurant in NYC. I’ve been going here since I was very little and loved the vegetarian tasting menu even before I could drink a sip of alcohol. That manchurian cauliflower is heavenly. Even if the rest of the people at your table get the meat tasting menu, you can still get the veggie. Make sure you get a cut of that jackfruit biryani. My first time there after I turned 21, I ordered the Mango Margarita. I’ve been getting it with pure bliss ever since. The cocktail menu is more than worth perusing. Great place for a special occasion(like my birthday every year: P)

A playground for your tastebuds. we enjoyed the lunch menu started off with the tangy cauliflower which you need to try, has a great tangy taste. We shared two dishes, a traditional chicken tikka masala and the grilled bass in a tangy tomato broth that was heavenly. The fish is poached which made it so incredibly soft and light. We were outta gas and passed on a dessert which Devi is known for, to our surprise our server Mark had a special dessert packed for us to take home for later. Another great experience. Btw, a delightful décor and light jazz style Indian music which complemented the meal.

Delicious food and attentive wait staff. Unique cocktails and great décor. A must if you’re a fan of Indian cuisine. The manchurian cauliflower is really good. The portions are generous. It’s also centrally located and it is best to make a reservation before arrival.

I was a bit disappointed in Devi. They are basically sort of upscale Indian food. The restaurant and ambiance are beautiful, which was great. The food itself had good flavor– we loved the cauliflower appetizer. We also tried the Saag Paneer(which was honestly a little bland), the the Spinach/Cheese Dumplings, and the Potatoes. The sauces for the dumplings and potatoes were great, but they really skimped on the dumplings and things in the sauce. The entrees were almost all sauce. Also, they charge $ 6 for rice and $ 6 for naan. I know this place is trying to be upscale, but really? At $ 16 a plate for a very sparse dish, I would at least expect rice to be included. Overall, a lovely date spot, but totally price gouging and not worth the money. You can get way better Saag Paneer a few blocks away at Jackson Diner for $ 11, with rice included.

the service was nice. BUT. it was kind of funny, my «meat» meal bowl was actually a LOT of bones, and I couldn’t believe I was chewing one .and it was a bone, another one. and it was a bone. all wow nicely covered with a nice(nice tasting sauce.). I understand a couple, maybe 3. I had to take a picture of my bowl, afterI had what I could swallow as meat. I al including a picture, as it may sound impossible.

We recently re-visited Devi for dinner and were blown away by their excellent food and service. We had an amazing experience both in terms of food and service! Everything we ordered was delicious. The shrimps were large, juicy and full of flavor. The okra salad super crunchy. The daal makhani, paneer all were super tasty! The naans came out piping hot and fresh! We were also served two different deserts on the house! Harry their server was very attentive, prompt and gracious! Thanks to devi and their staff we had an amazing dinner! Been a fan of their food for a while and now they have won us over with their service! Will def. be coming back for more! Thanks.

My cousin and I came here for the first time and we loved the atmosphere! We got the cauliflower best selling dish on the Unilocal free offer and it was amazing! We also got the lamb shank which was too good to be true. The eggplant with peanut butter sauce though… Not so good. Service was okay, but would love to be back for more lamb! The pita was cooked to perfection!

This is a great place to experiment with Indian food if you are faint of heart when it comes to exotic cuisine. I bought the Groupon tasting menu for two which included a sample of four appetizers, an entrée, rice, naan and dessert per person. Appetizer — I was scared when I ready sample of four apps. Luckily, is was four amuse bouche size portions of tandoori prawn, Haryali Paneer Tikka, Chicken Kastoori Kebab and Soya Malai Tikka. My favorite was the paneer which had a wonderful sauce of mint and cilantro. Entrée — I had the Goan Shrimp Curry and it was delicious! The size was reasonable with five shrimp in a coconut curry sauce. My only complaint is that nothing I had was very spicy. To be fair, I like really spicy food, but I found myself eating the peppers straight out of the sauce. My BF has the Tandoor Grilled Lamb Chops which were tender and prepared well. The naan and rice were fine but nothing to write home about. Dessert — for dessert, you are not given and option but the Pistachio Kulfi is a treat. Luckily it is what I planned to order if I had been given options. This street food style ice cream with rose and caramel was a great end to a great meal. The ambiance is nice and the service was great. Many say that this is a Westernized version of Indian food and as a non-Indian, that is the feeling I had. Even if inauthentic, the good food and service are worth the trip. The Groupon is a great way to go.

I was here this past Thursday with a reservation, but arrived to a fairly quiet scene. Our waiter DJ was able to confirm with the chef several dishes that were vegan, which came as a huge relief to my date who picked the restaurant! I had the Mich baigan ka salan while my date tried the Pork Vindaloo, which is supposed to be their spiciest entrée. Both were curry-like dishes that came in saucers, and served with a large tureen of jasmine rice to share. Naan is sadly made with milk and therefore NOT vegan, but the goat cheese and spinach naan were like mini naan sandwiches and was definitely worth the cheat meal. We received another order of their delicious naan on the house, which I forgot to ask but might have been the Onion & Parmigiano. We were carded when ordering cocktails which I will take as a compliment. The waiter saw that it was my birthday, and told us to save room later for dessert on the house, but that never appeared. Another patron who’s birthday it was had their dessert brought to the table with a lit candle, but our mango cheesecake while absolutely DELICIOUS, came unceremoniously. As for cocktails, I loved my Mumbai Margarita(skip the straw and sip from the glass for that salt and cayenne pepper kick!) and was unimpressed with the Spicy Pear & Fennel Martini. My dates Cumin Old Fashioned was tasty, but I’m a bourbon girl, and the Ginger Collins was probably the best cocktail overall.

After our disappointing Indian meal at Dhaba, I wanted to look for a new go-to place. I spoke to my friend Aditya and he recommended Devi. He is a fellow foodie and Sternie, so I trusted his judgment. I noticed on their site that they have an awesome lunch special: $ 20 for any appetizer and any entrée! The interior is beautiful and spacious! Unlike some other Indian restaurants I’ve gone to, you’re not sitting on top of your neighbors and you can hear what is going on! It was a hot day when I went to Devi, so I ordered a Kingfisher. Because they don’t have it on draft, I requested a frosted glass. Gotta love the service! When you check-in on Unilocal!or FourSquare, you get a code for a complimentary appetizer(value $ 12)! This is in addition to the appetizer that comes with the entrée. Scott and I split the Manchurian Cauliflower — delicious! The four pieces of cauliflower were huge and well coated in the tomato-based sauce. For our included appetizers, I ordered the Lamb Seekh Kebab(served with mint sauce and apricot chutney) and Scott got the Bharwan Aloo(homemade Indian cheese stuffed in roasted potatoes). I LOVED mine — great flavor in the lamb and the sauces were a great compliment. Scott’s was good, I just preferred mine much more(which is probably why I ordered it!) The vibe on the inside is refined. The Interior lanterns are so beautiful! With the entrees, we were served a bowl of rice for the table. This was a decent portion size — sometimes you don’t get enough to sop up all the sauce! For our entrees, we ordered the Nizami Chicken Korma(mildly spicy royal curry with almond paste) and Kadai Lamb(sautéed with onions and peppers in a brown sauce). The chicken is great — white meat that was fork tender. The lamb was also lovely but a bit tough. We also ordered garlic naan — it was perfectly puffy and just the right amount of crispy. It could have used more garlic though — never enough! I wanted to order another Kingfisher but THEYWEREOUT! Is that even allowed at an Indian restaurant? I ordered a 1947 instead — it was good, but not as good as Kingfisher. I took a shot of the interior layout — I love the leather booth seating. I also love the voluptuous bottoms of the statues — HEYYY!!! If you’re sticking to a budget, come here for lunch as dinner is much pricier.

First off I’m an Indian foodie and I think Devi is one of the best Indian restaurants in the city! The bartender is top notch and if you are a bourbon fan try the cumin old fashioned. We came here for restaurant week and there was a decent selection. The tandoori green pepper is amazing. It’s a bit filling for an appetizer and it certainly has a kick but it’s full of flavor. The chappli kabob appetizer is also very tasty, better proportioned and also a little kick with heat spice but not overdone. For main course, the only way to go is their amazing lamb chops. They were marinated in yoghurt and cooked in the tandoor. Not heat spicy but full of delicious Indian goodness. Dessert here is fine, nothing to write home about but it’s definitely worth dining for their drinks, apps, and main course.
