On my visit to NY, I stumbled upon this little spot. It’s attached to Symphony Space. My travel buddy and I walked up to check it out and found the door to the bar and walked on it. We were looking for a spot to grab a drink after eating at a tapas places down the way. What a great way to spend our last night in NY! It was a Monday night and they were doing open mic nights. I believe you had to have sheet music prepared for the live performers to play, so it wasn’t like a karaōke kind of deal. You had to know what you were doing. We met a fellow who was singing for the first time that night. He was nervous, but he ended up doing great! A lot of the folks ended up being really good. Drinks seemed to be ok — I stuck with the $ 5 wine that was on special. The bartender wasn’t particularly friendly, but he got my drinks to me fast. My buddy got a dessert there which she made me try a bite of… It was some kind of apple crumble. Not particularly memorable. I’d recommend coming in if you’re nearby and want something cool to do. I was that we caught this the last night we were in town. It was a nice little topper to the trip.

The $ 5 wine glass special for Happy Hour makes foe interesting bedfellows. The crowd here is older, in the range of 60’s somethings. But they have lived rich and eventful lives. And are some of the most fun folks you will meet. Hey I was just trying to catch footage of the Yanks game… what do I know about Acoustic Open Mic, with sheet music, and an old piano? They do. The talent there is heaven sent. This place is a quiet storm of fun. Before you realize it, you are drowning in fun.

My wife and I randomly stumbled across this place with Unilocal help. We walk in to the place and there was no hostess. After a few minutes of awkwardness we realized it was all self seating. A few more minutes of awkwardness and then we realized we had to order all our food from the bar up front. Drinks here are nothing special but they are in fact dirt cheap. They seem to draw a classier crowd because they have some awesome artists playing here. There was a really great jazz band playing their hearts out. Two drinks and an order of guacamole with baked plantain chips was 25 bucks. Pretty cheap! Come here to start off your night. Don’t expect expert mixology here. That’s not what this place is about. Grab your screwdriver/whiskey coke/vodka soda and sit back and enjoy the music. I did see a kid here last night so I am going assume that they’re family friendly.

* Drinks: semi dry riesling; sauvignon blanc; cava brut nature; sauvignon gris *Housemade Guacamole(Served with our oven baked tostones; the guac itself had an awesome texture, but I wish it had more lime/acidity to it; definitely needed more of a kick to it and perhaps spice as well; the baked tostones was awesome! such a great dipping vessel instead of tortilla chips) This bar is cozy and cute. We went on a Wednesday night, and there was open mike… people were reading prose and poetry. It’s a great mature atmosphere. No ratchetness in this bar, haha.

The drinks are great and the price is right… what more could I ask for? UWS is not really our area, I used Unilocal app on my phone to find this place. Out of all places Bar Thalia looked like a nice spot to relax. I’m happy that we came here. Im satisfied. Clean and cute atmosphere!!! This place was pretty good. The drinks are strong and very good. DELIIIIIIICIOUS! The menu is very limited however. Service is OK, although I feel that it possibly could be better at times, but they were very friendly. Had a good time here.

I think one of the hardest things to find in Manhattan is a true neighborhood bar. You know the kind where you walk in and everybody knows you. Bar Thalia is definitely that bar. We can in on a Monday night, which just happens to be open mic night and it looked like everyone there knew each other, it was a pretty great vibe. The place is a bit small it got pretty crowded so we didn’t get a seat and it was kind of difficult to see the stage. Also they could use a little help with the décor.

Great daily specials and weekly free trivia on Wednesday nights from 8−11pm! Low key vibe, allows you to have a conversation and actually hear the person you’re talking to. Love all the veggie options on the menu!

Unilocal has the location of the bar as on Broadway between 93rd&94th but it is actually on 95th between Broadway & West End Ave. Around the corner from Symphony Space Theater. Went on a Friday evening around 9:00. The drinks where good and the staff was friendly. Quiet spot. Décor is nondescript. Prices very reasonable. We did not eat so I can’t comment on the food. I would definitely return for drinks.

Bar Thalia is the bar attached to Symphony Space. The management is awesome, and I love coming here each week for trivia. One time, my friend broke a full glass of sangria, and the manager was has a good sense of humor about it, and any time we’ve ever interacted he’s been delightful and helpful. I had formerly complained before about their having no beer on tap, but I’m pretty sure they’re primarily a wine bar and they have a good selection of beer from Sixpoint Brewery and other less common and awesome beers. I like their sangria, too, and might have the palate of a child but love their mac and cheese and get it all the time – it’s really good with jalapenos! This is a great bar for meeting up with friends and for watching games on their tvs. It’s a low-key place that isn’t divey and the staff there are really cool and friendly. Definitely recommend if you’re looking to get a drink on the UWS.

Bar Thalia is one of my favorite spots — the staff is so accommodating and friendly(I also watched a presidential debate and the Golden Globes here) and the food is really good. Free wifi is always a plus. This place has a good feel and it’s nice to get out of the Columbia neighborhood where I live and into a more artsy kind of café/bar right under Symphony Space. Wed night trivia is on my list to try next.

I watched the second presidential debates and the golden globes here and both experiences are great memories. The staff are friendly and prompt. Mac and cheese, sandwiches, and chocolate mouse are tasty. A gem of a place.

Bar Thalia is a great little jazz bar underneath Symphony Space. The music is generally good, and the cocktails aren’t badly priced. I think the sangria is really nice. The place used to allow you to bring your own food, I haven’t tried it in awhile but that was a great policy. Quaint service and quaint seating, it’s a really nice place to just unwind and relax for a bit.

Came on a Wednesday night for their weekly Trivia, and had a great time. The bar is pretty small, but setup well with lots of small tables arranged throughout. Trivia is always a fun time, and the best part is that all beers are $ 5 during trivia. They have a nice selection of beers too. Nothing on tap, but the bottle/can selection is solid, with choices like Hennepin, Sixpoint and Lagunitas. All in all a fun time

Thalia Café had live jazz that was decent. They do not have beer on tap, but the selection of bottled beers included a couple of good ones that a real palette could appreciate. For someone who can’t read lips at all, it’s always great to find a place whose ambient noise levels match its décor. Thalia was a good find on a summer Thursday when lots of other bars were already in Friday night mode. They had a good mix of patrons who were worth more than a glance. This is a good location if you want to catch up with an old friend, or have that undistracted first conversation.

What do you expect of a café in new york city? I couldn’t say not being a local in all but i found the atmospheres at Thalia to be great. Internet, coffee, booze and an exceptional atmosphere of friendly service that is frankly lacking everywhere else in New York, what more could a man want. Bite size food made leave a few still hungry but it is undeniably tasty and will leave you wanting more. Overall i found Thalia to be a five star experience.

What a perfect café in the neighborhood. It really has everything one could ask for: + free wifi + coffee and booze + delicious bites + cozy tables + courteous bartenders + zero Columbia students(!) There’s great art on the walls(for the current exhibition, at least) and you can catch a dance performance or concert in the adjacent Symphony Space auditoriums most any night of the week, too! It’s exactly the kind of place I spend less than 10 minutes on crowded 2 train(from 34th) after work for. Bonus: if you check in on foursquare, you get ½ off beer + wine.
