Jewelry is my business, I’ve worked in the industry for many years and I still love their zinc jewelry. Excellent quality I still have pieces from a year or two ago (purchased from other locations). I love that some of the zinc necklaces are some of the same silhouettes you will find in your gold and silver plate as well as some really unique silhouettes.
It’s easy to shop this store, it’s not huge but the layout utilizes all the space. The guy at the counter let’s you do your thing. He sits and chills on the computer. I mention this because usually with smaller stores they are on you and watching like hawks at every thing you look at and touch.
The product is a mix of ethnic jewelry, accessories and clothing with some trend costume jewelry you can find along broadway. You can find printed pashminas as well as basic A-​line and sheath dresses with cool patterns. Store is merchandised well, you can see every thing hanging clearly. Necklaces aren’t tangled on the pegs, neither are the hangers on the racks (a huge pet peeve of mine).
I purchased two pairs of very comfortable, handmade in Turkey shoes along with a zinc necklace. Very happy!!!

Finally! A store with beautiful, ethnic inspired clothing and jewelry that is affordable and close to where I work. Backwoods in located in the Port Authority subway station on the lower level, through the turnstiles, just above the uptown A, C and E trains (downstairs from the Bolton’s). I decided to walk in because I saw a large wall of earrings as I was passing by. Those items weren’t my style — lots of blingy bridesmaid type stuff. But when I ventured further toward the back of this small store — JACKPOT! Beautiful jewelry from Turkey — DIFFERENT beautiful jewelry (i.e. not what you’ll find at H&M or Forever 21) between 5 and 10 bucks per pair. There was also a vast selection of very pretty Indian style dresses and tunics and unusual zinc statement necklaces hanging on the wall for twenty bucks, but I think that’s a bit much for them. However, you probably won’t see everyone else wearing them, and for that alone I guess it’s worth it. The salesman was very nice and put up with my indecision about a dress vs. a shirt. The dresses seem made for smaller women (I’m a size 12 and the XL dress I chose was a little snug on the top but still fit). Stick with the tops if you’re on the larger side and give yourself enough room for shrinking if it’s cotton. I’ll return to Backwoods for sure because I haven’t seen any accessories places around that have such lovely things for non-​crazy prices.

Note that they’re located in the subway station at 42^nd Street/​8^th Avenue — and they also have a location in the subway station at 74^th Street/​Roosevelt Avenue.
I’ve been to this store a few times — including yesterday — and they have a nice selection of very colorful clothes & accessories, plus the prices are quite reasonable. The people working there are variable in terms of friendliness, but meanwhile the selection and prices are much better than at most places.

Is this the same place that’s in the Port Authority ACE station? Because THAT place is the BEST. Cheap cheap cheap cheap, but AWESOME. Beautiful clothes! Great sweaters for winter, great summery tops for summer. Bangin.

I have been looking for the name of this place for the past year! I seriously love Backwoods. A friend told me about Backwoods about 3 years ago and I finally went with her then to see what she was raving about. I see why. First of all, when you walk in, you get an unsurpassed ambiance of care and coziness. I know it sounds silly – I mean, it is only a boutique after all, but there is something so warming about the store. The staff is amazing, friendly, and really care about you. I originally went to purchase some long skirts (something I barely find and have to order over the internet usually) but left with scarves, gloves, and some jewelry. I really love how they have such beautiful, unique pieces that you can’t find in main-​stream retail stores. Their prices are really unbeatable for a Manhattan boutique. I always wonder in the back of my mind what new things they have out that I am missing out on. Cannot wait to check them out again!

CLOSED in early 2011. Moved to a location more uptown… maybe the Upper East Side. I can’t remember what the sign said unfortunately.

Backwoods is a friendly, stylish, and very affordable womens clothing and jewelry store that also carries small gifts (like picture frames, small boxes, decorative pillow covers and throws, and even the occasional stuffed animal!) It’s like Cheers, the TV show, in that after one or two visits everybody knows your name, remembers your taste and style choices and makes you feel very welcome. John, Consuela, Maria, Clare… they are incredibly helpful when you want help and fine with letting you nose around on your own, when that is your preference. They carry regular and plus sizes. Their inventory is always getting new things. Se Habla Espanol, tambien. Their selection of scarves is always amazing. I also adore their sterling silver earring selection. There is huge range of styles from classic to cutting edge. They have $ 5 and $ 10 sales very frequently which ensures a continual flow of new pieces. They are located right near Fordham University’s Lincoln Center Campus, Roosevelt Hospital, TimeWarner, Hearst Publications and John Jay College and Newsweek, so your fellow shoppers are always an interesting and lively mix. It’s great that they carry clothing for the season we are actually in! If I lost my gloves in February, I know Backwoods will have cute affordable gloves on sale, not bathing suits! I’ve been shopping here for many years and have always loved getting my style at a bargain rate while having great customer service, as well. It is a real gem! Go and tell them «Cousin Lee» said «hi»!
