I was so excited when I saw that people had reviewed this! 6 ½ Avenue is a like a cozy, private mews and although there are no horses around, there are parts of it that smell like a stable at time. I think that’s mainly due to the one guy who sits and smokes cigars and feeds pigeons right by the entrance to the London Hotel. Due to the reconstruction of the old Flathotel into apartments, the space between 52nd and 53rd is sometimes not accessible, but the rest of this delightful little alley makes it easy to cross between streets. On cold days, I can still wear shorts when I go to the my gym on 56th Street thanks to the enclosed corridor between 55th&56th. And when coming back from the grocery store in the rain, this covered pathway keeps me fairly dry as I make the epic, almost Hobbit-like, trek from 57th St to 54th Street. I think this is an awesome little passageway and I love everything about it, except when tourists think it’s okay to sleep and charge their phones in the enclosed space between 55th/56th. For some reason, that really grinds my gears.

I’ve always loved this cozy causeway of foot traffic. The little valley that cuts through the buildings between 6th and 7th ave still has the amazing effect of bringing me back to a city that I knew as a kid; so much bigger than me, full of surprise streets and alleys still waiting to be discovered. Wandering through a space that is both grand and unique, you gain a strange feeling of intimacy in bustling part of town. The sounds of the city are all around, and on most days the tiled floors are crowded with fancy people in their fancy clothes; yet you are somehow removed from it all, transported by sculptures and architecture that are bigger than life. Grab a seat on the brown marble benches where 6th and ½ meets 51st, look up at the amazing roof flying what seems like 20 stories above your head and enjoy the sights and sounds of this space that is big enough to make even the most seasoned New Yorker feel small.

Ha! Looks like we run out of street names! No, I do appreciate the humor! Nice shortcut from 51st to 57th filled with benches, seats, sculptures, restaurants and just office spaces. 6 and a half!
