Tidewater Seafood

This place was recommended to me for steamed blue crabs which I love. They have a variety of seafood but I only got the steamed blue crabs. The staff was polite and the service was fast despite being crowded.

Excellent’s seafood selection. Friendly and competent service. Awesome location just off 64. Very well priced. This is our new stopping point mid way from Richmond to Virginia Beach!

I had free time in my day today so I decided to stop by this place that I had passed so many times. I walked in and I was hit by that not so fresh seafood smell. The staff was amazingly friendly and helpful and engaged me as soon as I walked in the store. There was a average selection of hot food available from spot sandwiches to crab cakes. I decided to go with the crab cake sandwich and the she crab soup (two of my favs).
While I waited for my food I walked around the store to see what other items they offered. One thing I saw that they had that you normally don’t see was red crabs which I thought was really cool. There was mako shark to croaker and catfish, but unfortunately from the look of the fish in the case they did not look to fresh.
I saw a employee restocking the case so I asked him where they get their fish from. To my shock and surprise he stated that they get it from George’s Seafood. I’m not an expert on wholesale fish supply but that was kind of odd to me. I shrugged it off and continued to browse while my food was cooking.

I got my food and parted company with a smile and a wave. Upon trying the she crab soup I was incredibly disappointed, the soup was bland and very thin not like most of the soups I have had before. It was sparsely populated with chunks of crab meat and onions, It was definitely not worth the $ 3.50. I put it the side and tried the crab cake sandwich, which was a big change from the preceding item. The bun was soft and buttery and veggies on the sandwich were very fresh. The crab cake itself was very big and flavorful, and was full of lump and claw meat.
I would probably try some of the cooked menu items here in the future. Although I’m not too sure about the «fresh» seafood but I give the benefit of a doubt and chuck it up to being an off day for them.

I noticed this building transitioning from one restaurant to another last fall. They opened sometime in October but I kind of forgot about it until Lent (no meat Fridays)
I stopped by tonight before a trip to Walmart thinking that I’d be able to get some fried shrimp. Mind you, I’m from Houston and am used to their huge gulf sized shrimp!
This place did not disappoint! Although they aren’t currently cooking the seafood (frying), they will steam and season it for free!
I ordered a half pound of their wild caught large shrimp and had them steamed with light seasoning. Once I got them home, I could barely wait to eat them… And they were absolutely DELICIOUS! I couldn’t believe how perfect they were; clean, fresh, plump, and the seasoning was just enough! I was really kicking myself in the butt for not ordering more and I even thought about driving all the way back for more but due to the rain, I decided not to.
The customer service was amazing! They are very courteous, honest, and helpful! They even accept EBT and have 10% military discounts on Wednesdays!
I will definitely be back for more!
***UPDATE***
Was super excited to come here for a second Friday in a row and let me tell you, I was far from impressed this time.
While the staff (same guy as last) was friendly, I was a bit disturbed with the older female employee who i witnessed prepare AND eat a fish sandwich in the kitchen which is right in plain view
Next, I ordered a half pound of the «wild» caught large shrimp and had them lightly season/​steam it (same as last week). I noticed that they were advertising «gumbo“so I decided to order a cup.
I get home and what a disappointment… the gumbo definitely was NOT gumbo… felt like they gave me a can of off brand Campbell’s soup. And the shrimp seemed old/​frozen.
