Great happy service! Heated up my wifes scone with butter and gave me a candle to put on top, it was her birthday.

Coffee and pastries right on the pier. Small shop with friendly service. Outdoor seating only. Coffee is fresh, but pastries are sourced.

This is a cute little spot to enjoy a lovely ocean view. Unfortunately the frozen cappuccino I ordered tasted more sugary than like actual coffee, but I came more for the scenery anyway. Free water is available though, and the prime seating on the pier doesn’t hurt like mentioned above. If you’re looking for a quick respite from the crowds, this is a great place to recharge.

Most delicious steamed hot chocolate that I have ever had. The coffee(mocha with shot of espresso) was good too. The baked items were fresh and light. Had the apple Danish and spinach cheese turnover. Both were good. An upbeat place to go for coffee and snack.

Can’t beat the location and quality of coffee at the Coffee Grinder in Newport. My wife and I are big coffee heads(and snobs), and we found so many spots around Newport that marketed good coffee. Decided on the C.G., honestly, on a whim! Glad we went… Right near the docks, with adirondak chairs set up to take in the view, the Coffee Grinder delivers a great brew, at good prices, with awesome surroundings. It’s location is what really puts it at a 4⁄5 for me – anyone can enjoy coffee in a shop, but not everyone can enjoy it facing the water and boats!

Above-average coffee, decent pastries, reasonable prices(very hard to find in Newport), supremely friendly service, and prime location by the water make this an appealing option to start the day. I’m glad there are small and sincere local businesses such as this in the area.

The perfect way to start a morning on vacation. We love to sit outside on the adirondack chairs and have our breakfast. I also love the chalkboard menu and signage at the counter. Perfect spot!

This place has it going on. Java by the wharf, and the java is tasty. Get the iced Cappuccino. You’ll thank me later.

«This is really good» «I feel wired» «Yum» — just a few things I heard during my 2 minute stop in Coffee Grinder. I was quickly greeted by their welcoming staff who gave this Newport coffee shop that local, homely feel. With a perfect view of the bay, I was able to enjoy my coffee looking over the scenic, bustling town. Why stop here? I’ll be back tomorrow before my vacation’s departure to kickstart the trip!

How can you beat having a coffee while sitting on a pier? Delicious espresso, even better views. The owner was so welcoming, energetic and passionate about what she does. You can pay cash or credit cards. Covered and uncovered areas on the pier. Plenty of seating. Short line. Will come back!

It was a bitterly cold November day and the freezing rain had thusly frozen my heart, leaving an unwelcome end to an otherwise fun solo road trip through New England. Irked at the weather for spoiling my shameless gawking of grandiose mansions and enviable yachts, I trudged through the overtly adorable Newport streets in search of a bite to eat before starting the trek home. This is when I happened upon a small coffee shop tucked away on a pier — one that, in sunnier times, overlooks docked boats that demand to be photographed for all of their shameless-east coast nautical flair. This coffee shop was The Coffee Grinder, and after checking trusty Unilocal,I decided to pop in for clam chowder and a coffee(and exercise restraint over the tiers of pastries and tarts). I’m not giving this place 5 stars because of stellar coffee or cuisine — while undeniably delicious, nothing quite blew my mind. What has me willing to take to the streets and sing this place praises is the owner. She completely turned the end of my trip around, chatting happily with me while I munched and sipped and marveled at the foggy waterscape out the windows of her cute shop. She was so sweet, and clearly so grateful that she owns such a spectacular piece of real estate. A few minutes later an equally friendly staff member came to relieve her because lo and behold, it was the owner’s birthday. That’s what I love about local business — people passionate enough about their company to come in even on days the rest of us beg off. If you’re in Newport, please stop by The Coffee Grinder — although a touch on the pricier side, know that you’re supporting the dream so many of us wish we were living, and someone who so evidently has a positive and charming outlook on life. I will certainly be back the next time I visit(although next time I’ll take a dose of sun, please!).

Every time I’m in newport I make a stop at the coffee grinder. I always get a frozen cappuccino. So tastey! They have an extensive menu with iced and hot drinks. Both caffeinated and not for those who aren’t coffee fans. Frozen lemonade in the summer and hot chocolate in the cooler months. They have seasonal flavors too! The staff here is awesome! To pay via credit card you swip on their cell phone. Great view of the water at the end of the pier while you sit and enjoy your drink!

I think this place is adorable, has a great view, and I also thought the owner was just great– so friendly and knowledgable, and she obviously truly loves this place and works hard for it. I came here twice during my Newport stay, and really wanted it to be my favorite. I just didn’t love the lattes. To be fair, I didn’t try other beverages, so maybe the latte is the only miss, but I was so looking forward to that bold, smooth espresso taste with velvety steamed milk, and I did not get it. The milk was thin and too frothy, and the espresso didn’t taste right– too weak, and maybe a little burnt. I will come back and try other items, and enjoy the beautiful view, and maybe even give the latte another shot next summer.

Great coffee served by a small local business at the end of a pier, what’s not to love. Service is a bit slow as the kitchen is tiny and only the owner works here most days. The coffee is great though and served in awesome hug cups. The pastries are pretty good too and she’ll even heat them up for you. Cash only. Grab a table on the pier or one of the Adirondack chairs for a relaxing morning view of the yachts and harbor. You might even make friends with the owner of one of the super yachts and get invited for a day out.

Dear Coffee Grinder: I love you and you’re still my favorite because your owner is the sweetest ever, you still have the best views in town, my heart still skips a beat while I am walking down Bannister’s Wharf towards you in anticipation of the perfect iced latte or iced cappuccino that you always make. You continue to be the one place in Newport that I look forward to going to the most, but two suggestions that would make you even more amazing than you already are. 1) Whoever makes your spinach and cheese(and other) turnovers, they could do better. The one I purchased had almost no filling and what was there was bland and flavorless. 2) A friend who ordered a drink with chocolate noticed that you used Hershey’s. There are better chocolate syrups available and they will make a difference! I promise! To end on a positive note, we bought a bunch of muffins for a brunch sail and everyone who tried them absolutely loved them, so much that many of us went back for more the next day! The raisin bran was a crowd favorite. See you next summer. AE

I nearly always stop in at the Coffee Grinder when I’m in Newport. It’s at the end of one of the wharfs, so not only does it have a great view(with some decent outdoor seating), but the staff is also really knowledgeable. I recently had a funny conversation with I’m guessing the owner about the difference between lattes and cappuccinos and how so many people don’t really know the difference. I was relieved to see she felt the same way, and the drinks she made were exactly as expected. Whether you want a caffeine fix or a morning pastry, the Coffee Grinder is a great spot to check out!

The cute little coffee shop by the water you’ve been searching for your whole life. Adirondacize [the verb I made up to describe the relaxation activities one can perform while sitting in an Adirondack chair] and stare at ostentatious yachts you’ll never board. Snivel at wealthy passers by who silently snivel back at you for being too poor to enter the pier gate. Drink yummy drinks too. I had the frozen cappuccino, which the coffee girl described as «decadently healthy.» I sincerely doubt that; there had to be a ransom’s worth of sugar in there. But it was really yummy. Little pastries and snacks available too. The entire business is the size of the bathroom on one of those yachts, but it packs a strong local flavor.
