Disappointed again. After reading all the 4 star reviews I was really hoping there was finally a real bbq joint in the area but I have come to the conclusion that so cal people have no clue what good bbq is! I am from Memphis where bbq and Elvis are king. I ordered the ribs and the brisket. The ribs were so — so, the brisket had a couple of moist tender pieces but the majority was dried out and chewy. Got the mac & cheese. Tasted like they put some processed cheese on cooked macaroni then nuked it in the microwave. Portions were generous but food was mediocre. With a beer I paid $ 25 for lunch, what a waste.

I ordered a full rack of each of thier ribs. And thier portion of Tri-tip, mashed potatoes and slaw. The Good: The sauces! Each one thoughtfully made with great balances of tangy, rich, sweetness, heat and acid. I just love it when Q’s have more than one sauce and they had 6, all of them were good to great and bumped the rating a star. The Bad: The meat and it’s treatment. There are different ranges of quality when it comes to meat and they use the lowest. The meat to bone ratio was subpar for a good bbq joint. They left the silverskin on thier ribs making it worse, you have to worry the meat of the bone instead of that succulent bite known for good bbq. The meat was tough and hard to chew, filled with tendon and gristle. Some of this could have been avoided by smoking the meat low and slow, the smoke flavor was decent. But even the Tri-tip was tough and chewy and the portion was small for the price, if it weren’t for the sauces, I wouldn’t have enjoyed it. The Ugly: The sides. I got the mashed potatoes and the slaw. The potatoes were mealy and lacked the creamy texture you want. A little cream and butter along with better mashing would have improved the texture. It lacked seasoning, but the gravy was good, the portion was not. The slaw… was just cabbage, no sauce. I ended up putting thier mustard based bbq sauces on it… once again the sauce saved the day. Over all, I wouldn’t go here again other than to get thier sauces. Service was good, people were friendly, food came out hot and fast. If you need to scratch that bbq itch, it will do, but if you are looking for that existential bbq experience… this isn’t it. Too bad too… they have the sauces to get you there. Peace!

My family took me out for an early Father’s Day and I could not have been happier. This was the first time I went to Billy Dz but I will be going back for my go to BBQ place. The food was amazing, and the prices were very reasonable. The staff was really nice and I even had a conversation which may have been the owner or a manager, but she was really nice and said that it was a mom and pop restaurant, not a chain. My whole family raved about it and to top it off, the sauces were great. Our favorite was the blonde BBQ sauce. I would highly recommend as I never write reviews but this one made me want to.

Not the best BBQ we’ve had, pretty expensive, and you don’t get a lot of food for the price. And the food came out with in minutes so nothing was that freshly cooked. We wouldn’t go back

Great bbq, good prices, fast service, and great staff. Jennifer & Alyson were really friendly, accommodating, and always asking if I needed anything. They have gone above & beyond to make my dining experience a memorable one. I’ve been coming here for a few years now and I’ve always liked it, but now I highly recommend it. Beer on tap, a few TV’s playing sports, and a wide menu selection makes this a nice find here in Newbury Park.

Hubby & I are there earlier this week. I had a pulled pork plate with Onion strings & coleslaw. The pork was fantastic. Tender with a lot of smoke. I like the fact that there was no sauce on it. A lot of places smother their meat, & you can’t even taste the meat. I didn’t care for the coleslaw… I prefer a mayo based coleslaw & theirs was vinegar based. Onion strings were ok. Had worse & better. Hubby had the Tri tip plate with mashed potatoes. They were delish. No gravy, just butter. Fast service too, even though it was very busy.

Bleh! Not awful. Not amazing. Wouldn’t be my first choice of BBQ food in the area but tolerable. Service is great and they do a lot of fundraisers for the community so for that I give them two thumbs up.

Just found this place, as I travel SoCal for work. Excellent food, service was very quick even being just after Happy Hour 3 – 6 p.m. Daily, and line still out door. I had the 2 meat plate(Tri-tip and chopped chicken with a side of black beans), both prepared well, and very flavorful(even without sauce). Only negative thing is trying to figure out what sauce to use with meats chosen…6 to choose from and all quite tasty in their own way. If you are looking for a quick grab and go, or sit down with friends, great food/service place… Billy D’z Backyard BBQ is a must try!!!

Great counter help. I ordered 3 items pulled pork, tri-tip, and St. Louis ribs. The ribs are juuuust riiiight. I practically inhaled them, [bleep] the sauce!!! lol The pork was a little bland and on the dry side ONITSOWN(I’ll explain in a sec). The tri-tip was tender, juicy, and a little bland – i wanted a little more smoke. Now the sauces: I tried only 4 out of 6. Blonde, spicy, sweet, and Carolina. The pork was AMAZING with the Carolina sauce. The tri-tip not so much. The sauce seemed to enhance the pork tenfold! Spicy had some kick and twang(yes that is a word) That one goes on everything! Sweet, not my favorite, but my brother doesn’t like hot-anything; he was smothering everything in it which is high praise for him(super picky eater). Blonde. I think I’m in love. It’s a horseradish based sauce. If you like wasabi, this is your sauce. Waaaay more of a kick than spicy and lots of flavor. I loved this on the pulled pork. I didn’t try their coleslaw, but if it’s a dry slaw it’d be wicked good with this sauce. Atmosphere: sports bar-ish, but clean and open. You don’t feel like you’re sitting on top of your neighbors. Sports on the multiple TVs. Cute place, good for kids. Verdict: more smoke! On the pork, on the tri-tip. Don’t you dare [bleep] with your St Louis ribs or I’ll flip a table over. I’ll be back!

I have been coming here semi-regularly for a few years now. I love their cobb salads and I get it with a variety of the meat options. The BBQ Brisket is probably my favorite. They have great portions for the price. Their sauces are excellent especially the Ghost Pepper, Smoky Jalapeño, and Blonde. Definitely a great lunch spot.

This is my second visit with and order for 4 people. Really disappointed was poor service and poor food. Really surprised as the food was really good the first time Burnt ends we’re dry, ribs tough and the BBQ chicken salad was below par. what really added to the one star is the counter help. Very unhelpful and short. I

Came in because of a «buy 1 entrée get 1 free» card program. But after paying I noticed that the receipt showed the discount was applied to a kid’s meal… Well, I decided to say something in case it was a mistake, but the owner(I think) came back with an attitude and actually started to argue with me. I think the statement that got to me was she said that«they had a business to run and that is how they do it». I was taken back by that comment… I wasn’t trying to argue, just trying to let her know that other restaurants discount an entrée and I was only stating that I was disappointed that they take the discount off a kids meal. The reason we came to your restaurant that day was because you advertised in this discount card program. So this isn’t the correct reply if you want to keep your customers. Obviously this didn’t set the tone for our meal. On to the food: we were surprisingly disappointed this time… We have been here before and remember the food being very good so it must have been an off day. My brisket was without flavor and my wife complained of how dry her pork was and she had to soak it in the bbq sauce. I didn’t dare complain as we already were feeling unwelcome. So this is the reason for 2 stars instead of 1. We have had better here in the past, but unfortunately will not come back. (Reply to owner) Thanks for your reply. The situation wasn’t about $ 2, but how it was handled. Yes, the offer was made to change the bill, but we declined. Again it wasn’t the money but the reaction we received.

We only had two chicken sandwiches here, both were good. So, this review is mainly for their amazing BBQ sauces. I am going to just make it quick and rate this place a five star establishment. Each table is equipped with 6 bottles of home made Bbq sauce: Carolina, Sweet, Blonde, Tangy Mustard, Smoky Jalapeños, and Spicy. I tried them all and loved the ghost pepper(not on the table, you have to ask the cashier for this) mixed with the blond the best. Each of the Bbq sauces can stand on its own and has its own delicious unique flavor. The front counter has a detailed and spot-on description of the flavor of each of the sauces. I am attaching a photo of that with this review. The spicy Bbq sauce gives you just a nice kick, and you can definitely feel the ghost pepper heat. Sooo good. The place is a good sized restaurant with tables and chairs nicely spaced out. Something about the way everything is placed, from the condiment bar to the soda counter… It feels right and welcoming. We came right at the beginning of lunch on a Saturday, so we were the only ones here. But within 10 minutes of our arrival, the restaurant was filled to half of its capacity. We got our food pretty quick. I am not too big on ribs or meat, but they have a huge menu here that would make any Bbq lover happy. The prices are decent as well. Everything is a la carte. The owners work the cash registers, and serve the food. Really nice people. I will definitely come back here again and try their other items on the menu. An important last note: their restrooms are spotless!!!

Billy D’z BBQ is great! I come here pretty regularly and have tried several of the menu items. They have fantastic Tri-Tip and the brisket is also amazing. Pulled Pork is pretty right on, though I’m just not a huge fan of pulled pork in general. Do yourself a favor and ask for a Porky D’z when you come in. You get your choice of meat(I perfir the Tri-Tip) and it comes with mac and cheese and bacon on a sandwich roll. It’s hard to eat without making a mess out of yourself, but they have a conveniently placed sink in the lobby to clean yourself up afterwards. Say hi to the manager Kyle. He is a super friendly guy and he works hard to keep the place clean and the food coming out quickly.

I was in the area and had heard good things about Billy D’z and they did not disappoint. I thought the level of service and the quality of the food was very good. Plus there prices are extremely reasonable and I know where to go for BBQ when I am in Newbury Park!

The service was decent but the food was not. Tried the BBQ chopped salad, brisket sandwich with blonde sauce and pork ribs. None of which would get me to return. No matter which sauce I put on my tri tip never tasted better.

We got the St. Louis Ribs Full Rack– so delicious– and they have several selections of BBQ sauces you can get on the side, I loved the spicy jalapeño BBQ sauce it packed heat. The Brisket Chili was tasty it had lots of onions in there which I loved. They also carry a few beers on draft. Happy hour is from 3 – 6 daily which includes $ 3 dollar sliders along with other items on that menu and draft beer for $ 4. They have so many side options in here and I love that the kids menu has lots of choices as well. It’s really big inside with the Games on and there is also an outside seating area too. The service is quick and friendly.

Came by yesterday to try something new. I have had Billy D’z before through AYSO and other organizations. They are very into the community and I respect that… With that said, I work for an Austin based company(although I have lived here all my life) and quite honestly, people in California just don’t get it. BBQ isn’t meat with sauce. its preparation and the sauce is auxiliary. Unfortunately the sandwich I had here was tough, taking a lot of effort to bite through the meat and sinew and almost flavorless. it was more like a ‘meat sandwich’ than BBQ and even with a bunch of sauce, it was dry. Maybe a bad day but there are lots of alternatives. Better luck next time I hope.

We found this BBQ joint and decided to come for lunch. My husband’s cousins, his sister, and we all showed up for lunch this past wknd and ordered a bunch of lunch plates! We ordered: (1) beef ribs + tri-trip, 2 item lunch plate, with side of potato salad — my husband’s beef ribs were too dry and very burnt(lots of char going on). his tri-tip was too dry, but he still ate it all haha; 3 stars (2) st. louis pork ribs + brisket, 2 item lunch plate, with side of mac n’ cheese + sweet potato fries, my pork ribs were plentiful and delicious, goes well w/the bbq sauces provided at the table. the brisket was soft so that’s nice, and the sides did not disappoint! 4 stars friendly staff, and plenty of seating available! parking available in the lot, and the BBQ sauces are divine! :) I really liked the Blonde sauce, and my husband loved the spicy jalapeño smoked bbq sauce. yes!
