After moving to this neighborhood had hard time to find a hairstylist to cut my hair right. Tried them all: high and low, coming out disappointed with uneven cut and too much attitude spending quite a bit of money. Then I went to Barber shop on 56, to check if they do women’s cut. Was welcomed by a friendly staff member right away. I was taking care by Mario and ever since have great precise cut, friendly hairstylist, warm and welcoming environment. It became my highly recommended business in Manhattan. Thank you!

Sam did an excellent job with my cut and beard trim. Called to make an appointment and arrived a few minutes earlier than my appointment, Sam saw me straight away and was very thorough and attentive. Good value prices, top quality cut and trim and great service. I’ll be back!

Can’t beat a close warm cream neck shave after your cut. This place was excellent. Great staff, 2^nd floor, easy in and out with a wonderful trim.

Sam gave me a great razor shave and trim during my visit to New York. He was fast, efficient, and had good attention to detail. I couldn’t be happier.

Got a great last minute shape-​up from Mario. Got taken care of straight away, and it was a great price. Mario was great. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars is because they don’t let you tip your barber on your card. What’s the point of taking credit cards if you need to bring cash for the tip? Now I need to go back to give Mario his well deserved tip.

I ran in here last minute needed a shave and a hair cut. The haircut wasn’t bad at all. However my shave felt like it came from Sweeny Todd, ouch. I was in pain. But the barber cleaned me up with a nice cold towel made sure I wasn’t bleeding anymore and I was on my way. However it was really pricey. I paid about $ 56… Um? LOL what? I paid and left. I’d suggest trying it for yourself. Maybe your experience won’t be as bad.

I don’t know how else to say this — this is probably the best barber shop on the planet!
It was first recommended by a coworker when I started working in the neighborhood and I’ve been coming here ever since (~5 years).
First off, the barbers are absolutely excellent — they take direction very well and I’m always happy when I walk out. I’m very particular about my haircuts: I feel great when they’re on point and awful when they don’t come out the way I expect. Not once did they ever let me down — absolute professionals.
Second, there’s a really cool, old-​school vibe. Not to be cheesy, but getting a haircut here is like an «experience» too — the barbers are all friendly and will shoot the sh with you (if you want to) — makes it feel like an old neighborhood place with a Manhattan vibe. Not something you’d find at a salon type place.
Third — the prices are very reasonable.
Fourth — there’s almost always availability and they’ll be flexible. You’ll never have to wait days or more like some other places.
Give it a shot — you will not regret this place (and will probably wind up coming back, just like me)

Just started working in the area and was in desperate need of finding a new barber. Enter Sam and the BarberShop on 56^th. Sam was great — delivered an excellent cut and an even better shave/​beard trim. Will certainly return.
Pro tip — they don’t accept tips on credit/​debit card transactions, so be sure to bring some cash with you.

My friends and I have been coming to Joseph for years, and I have several colleagues who go to him based on my recommendation. I know a guy who commutes in from Philly just to get his hair cut by the maestro. Reliable, great customer service, reasonably priced, no-​frills barber shop. I don’t «go» to the barber, I have a barber.

Great haircut! In the city from TX and I was way past due for a clean up. A lot of times the first cut can be rough, but I’m very impressed. I marked this one to remember for future visits to the city!

Have had Maria as my barber for the past 4+ yrs. She does a great job. Friendly and professional barbers. My offices used to be across the street. I relocated downtown and I still only go to Maria at Barber Shop on 56^th.

Inconsistent barbers and variable skills — unpredictable outcome. Be prepared to be surprised in a bad way.

I popped in here for a beard trim on a Saturday. This barber shop in in the heart of midtown and is very busy during the week with local office workers. However, on Saturdays, the wait is not bad. at all
I was in need of a beard trim and I am very particular on what I want. The guy who worked on my beard did a very good job doing what I asked for, spending the extra time to get it right. I got the whole shmear — nice work on the clippers on the beard, cleaning up the edges on my neck and mustache, and the straight razor on the back of my neck. Good stuff.

Needed a haircut and as I’m not that sensitive when it comes to my hair, I went to this places recommended by a colleague. I walked in and what seemed to be the owner said «one minute». After less than 60 seconds of waiting I was showed to the owners chair and the haircut could begin. The guy paid big attention to the details and asked me several times what I thought and adjusted if needed. I have to say for the price of 26 usd ex tips I think I’ve got value for the money. One thing keeping me from giving it the last star was the fact that it was an old place and could do with a little cleaning, but the haircut was gr8

I needed a haircut fast in order to save time on my wedding proposal plans. I was waiting for my ring to finish and I figured, «what’s out here in Midtown?».
I found this place! I went in at around 2:30 ish and there was no line at all and I was able to sit right down to the chair to get started. The gentleman by the name of Mario was able to give me a great haircut exactly how I wanted it. It feels really good to finally find a place that can cut my hair right and also make me feel comfortable. He was nice and so were the other barbers. I am not sure how Manhattan prices compare but for the service, quality of the cut I thought the price was fair.
Only thing I will say though is that if you’re looking to tip your barber, make sure you bring cash. They currently do not put tips on the credit/​debit card. I have to make sure I send Mario a thank you note because I was in a bit of a rush to leave and I had no cash. I know, I felt horrible leaving! But I would absolutely recommend this place.

Genuwine old school no fuss barbershop. They are on the second floor and you have to push the upper left-​hand doorbell for them to buzz you in.
I walked in just after they opened and they cheerfully squeezed me in. The barber took my coat, and my hat and made sure I did not forget the hat on the way out. My barber was meticulous, friendly and had the right level of chattiness. They have a four dollar discount deal if you check in prior to service. Haircut was exactly what I was looking for, and I thought $ 25 is a fair price for Manhattan. Felt like a million bucks when I left, and my wife even said wow! when I met her for breakfast afterwards.
The place is decorated with a few vintage barber tools and photos but this is no Disneyfied re-​creation. Definitely will return if I have chance.

I have very low expectations for haircuts, but I came here twice and both times I got a quality cut. Dude (forgot his name, the man from Malaysia) was friendly, and sensed I was ambivalent at the end of the cut, and offered to cut it more. Very precise. Appreciated him going the extra mile, when he could’ve easily just stopped and I probably would’ve accepted it.
